Senapati, May 10 NNN: The Naga Peoples Movement for Human Rights (NPMHR-South sector) said it is deeply concerned with the involvement of Manipur police commandos from Lamlai police station saying that the security personnel overstepped their jurisdiction and came to Chadong village arrest individuals involved in an altercation that took place in the village on May 8 evening.
It can be noted that there was an intense inter-village feud over the alleged distribution of compensation money related to Maphou Dam project.
On Thursday, the Naga rights body said a confrontation in this regard broke out between the Manipur police commandos and some women from the village. “When more villagers gathered, the commandos fled taking along with them one Benjamin Kashung who was not involved in the quarrel,” the NPMHR-South sector said while adding, “It is not the first time that Manipur state forces have been used by party in disputes. There have been instances of the Assam Rifles, Manipur police commandos, and Manipur Police acting as referees and interfering in the functioning and administrative processes of the village in the past”.
NPMHR appealed to the people of Chadong to maintain peace and not let some individuals with vested interests to further their own agenda and destroy the social fabric of the village. Any dispute should be resolved at the village level as resorting to police forces will only worsen the situation, the rights body asserted.
