Ashalata Gi Hikchang (Ashalata’ body) a play of Banian Repertory theatre, Imphal directed by MC Thoiba and written by M.C. Arun was shown at NT theatre as part of a theatre festival on Feb 15 last.
A short function was held prior to the play with IS Kangjam as Chief Guest. He commended the organizers for making the festival an annual event. Presiding over the function, Buddha Chingtham said the MC Thoiba, MC Arun combo is well matched for both persons echo similar ideology and thinking. He described the Banian Repertory as one of the most vibrant theatre group which has successfully produced plays regularly.
The play revolves around present day Manipur and often repeated clashes over dead bodies. The abnormal spiritual and political journey of a human body whose soul has untimely left it due to clashes between established state and non state forces is the main theme of the play.
The life of the play is the artistry of the debate between the conflicting or opposing parties . Well supported by amazing sound and visual works thought provoking, soul searching queries flung around like sharp arrows from beginning till end of the play. As the play progressed present day Manipur embroiled in a political clash was showcased in the most exalted platform of theatrical works. The words coming out from the actors of the play were words coined by urgency , war and conflict. Shrimad Bhagavad Gita is different from other spiritual works as it emerged out of urgency and it did not find roots in the caves or deep jungle.
Absence of microphones sometimes snatches away the heat of the debate in such play yet the actors matched up the expectations of the political challenge, people’s expectations by their awe inspiring performances. When the stage was full it was a theatrical journey beyond comparison as each actor was embodiment of perfection. When a solitary actor performed it was another moment of joy. The play shows that every phase of life throws up different challenges and we humans keep faith in different ideologies and main emphasis is given in the second half of the 20th century when Manipur entered a different political map.
Amidst the killings, there is also a rage to strive for peace, each opposing parties believe in different approaches to attain the ultimate goal that is peace. The ever eluding peace for now remains tethered unseen, unexplained. The politically tyranny that has disturbed both the living and non living world can not be better explained or shown. Suffering of those who have died, we do not know but the play shows the ordeals of their near ones. Ashalata’s Body is a masterpiece both literally and artistically. Banian Repertory has many plays to its credit and many are highly acclaimed. What makes this play of the theatre house outstanding is the affinity of the play with the common people. It stands out as a lone voice of the people trapped in the never ending conflict.

Imphal Feb 19 MNS/Agencies: Amidst the growing demands for government revealing the owners of contraband drugs worth over Rs 1.3 crore seized recently from the Imphal airport, Manipur government Tuesday decided to handover the case to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). On January 11 last, a huge consignment of contraband drugs was seized by the Special Investigation Unit (SIU) of Imphal West district police from Imphal airport. Interestingly, on the next day of the seizure of the drug, the police inspector who led the SIT in recovering the drug was transport besides abolishing the SIU by an order of the Imphal West SP. Briefing to reporters after the cabinet meeting, Gaikhangam said that the state government took the decision considering the need for a transparency in dealing with the case and to arrest the smugglers as the seizure of the contraband item has became an issue to the state. In Manipur a very serious trend of drugs is going on, for the last few months a huge quantity of drugs worth crores of rupees has been seized in the state from Imphal airport and post office. However, in almost all the cases the police could not identify owners of the seized drugs, he asserted. Taking a serious note in this regard, the state government has decided to hand over the cases to the CBI, the home minister said. Not only the recent seizure at Imphal airport but other cases related with the seizure of huge contraband drugs in the state by the police or its narcotic cells would be handed over to the CBI, he added. The deputy chief minister was of the opinion that drug smuggling menace in the state was more serious than that of insurgency problem. He said that drug abuse could eliminate the society, the state as a whole. As such government took the matter seriously. Gaikhangam further said that the drug consignment was meant for export to Myanmar. Regarding the abolition of SIU, he said the state government has never recognized which was set up by the SP Imphal West under his power. He has certain power to establish or demolished the same, he clarified. Manipur state Cabinet has decided to set up a language board “Directorate of Language, Promotion and Implementation” in the state on Tuesday. Terming the decision as a landmark step by the state Cabinet, Education minister and Government spokesperson M Okendro said since the inclusion of the Manipuri language in the 8th Schedule of the Constitution in 1992, the people have been longing for a language directorate in the state. The Cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister O Ibobi at the Cabinet Hall in the Chief Minister’s Secretariat discussed 19 different agenda, Okendro told journalists. He said the language directorate will be headed by an IAS officer who will be assisted by an officer of Manipur Finance Department. The Cabinet has also decided to hold the Combined Civil Service exam under Manipur Public Service Commission (MPSC) regularly from next year. It has further decided to recruit 91 different posts, including 22 Manipur Civil Service (MCS) posts, 25 Manipur Police Service (MPS), 28 Manipur Finance Service (MFS), 15 SDCs and one Election officer. He added that the Cabinet has also decided to hand over the case of Tulihal Airport drugs seizure to the CBI and to intimate the Prime Minister and the Union Home Minister about the matter through a letter. The Central leaders will be requested to instruct the Indian Aviation Authority to look into such illegal shipment of contraband drugs by flights, he said. It has also approved regularization of the two adhoc Fast Track Courts in the state. Allotment of 3 acres of land for Mary Kom Academy has also been approved by the Cabinet, he added.

DIMAPUR, Feb 19 NNN : BJP national president Rajnath Singh said that BJP led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) will come to power at the Centre after the next Lok Sabha elections.
The BJP supremo also said the Naga People’s Front (NPF) led Democratic Alliance of Nagaland (DAN) government will return to power after the ensuing assembly polls in Nagaland.
Rajnath Singh was in Nagaland today in a one-day visit to the state.
After campaigning in the far flung eastern Nagaland district of Mon, Rajnath Singh before boarding his chartered plane at Dimapur airport this evening talked to a strong posse of journalists and said that NDA will return to power at the Centre and DAN in Nagaland after the Lok Sabha and the Nagaland assembly elections.
“I’m confident that the people of India will choose the NDA during the Lok Sabha polls and DAN by the people of Nagaland in the ensuing polls,” said Rajnath Singh.
The BJP chief then assured that special packages will be given to the North Eastern states once the NDA comes back at the Centre.
“During the NDA regime under the leadership of Atal Behari Vajpayee we had created DONER to look after the North East region and this time too the NDA will take up special policy for the region so as to bring all round development,” further assured Rajnath Singh. The BJP stalwart then said, “Soon after the NDA returns to power, we will resolve the Naga political issue through meaningful mutual dialogue besides providing special packages for the whole North East region.
Attacking the Congress led UPA government, the BJP chief said economic growth has been totally derailed under the UPA government. He said there was a national growth rate of 8.4% during the NDA regime. “But now under the UPA the growth rate has gone down to just 5.2%,” he rues.
Further attacking the UPA government, the BJP leader said there have been corrupt practices everywhere now. “The 2G scam, the chopper deal scam and various other corruption cases have been witnessed today, “ he pointed out. “But the BJP will had never compromise on corruption. We will never compromise on it in future, “ he pledged.
On the Prime Minister’s proposal to have debates on corruption, the BJP chief said, “Debate is not a solution and I have demanded for a comprehensive investigation on the chooper scam.”

As the election date for Nagaland assembly election draws nearer a scene is emerging, which is crystal clear? It is likely a change may be effected when the results of elections are declared. Wining state assembly election continuously for three terms is not an easy task. At the central level too Congress party is making all out efforts to emulate the record set by Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru in forming Government continuously for three terms. Since then no political party has been able to remain in power continuously for more than two terms. But Ibobi of Congress (I) and Narendra of BJP are different. The party led by them could win continuously for three terms in their respective states. Neiphieu Rio will not be able to do what the two leaders did. The Home Minister of the state showing damn, to the directive of the Election Commission of India not to show money power, carried arms, liquor and money that reflected the approach of downfall to the party. NPF also attempts to win the election by whipping up the emotion of a community. But Nagaland itself is embroiled by the clash of opinion among the people on whether the state should be divided into two or not. Neiphieu Rio could not put at rest the demand for bifurcation of Nagaland. So he attempted to direct the anger of the disgruntled people of the state to Manipur by making a deep jibe to the Manipur Chief Minister calling him the enemy of Nagas. That reflected his insecurity. He swam in the false dream that the people of his state would stand for his party if he locked in verbal duel with the Chief Minister of neighbouring state. But Nagaland cannot be in competition with Manipur. Manipur is well ahead of all the neighbouring states including Nagaland. In a race competition what is important is running very fast to touch the finishing line ahead of other competitors. By shouting one does win. But NPF of Nagaland thinks otherwise. Yes the leader of a political party can ridicule the policy and programmes of a rival party. That is a customary practice accepted by the law of the land. As if the whole people are behind him he did something a Chief Minister of a state would not have thought of doing. Is Nagaland for Nagas only? Do not their population constitute people belonging to other faith? Rio indulged in cheap propaganda. He has been exposed. Keeping all these things in view one can make a logical conclusion, Nagaland may see a change. A change that will speed up peace and development of the state. Nagaland would have been a hot spot for tourism and centre for many of these centrally sponsored projects but it cannot grab anything. Because it remained talking about problems of Nagas only. But they cannot speak out what do they mean by problems of Nagas. Will the problem be solved by widening the road will it be solved by opening more academic institutions. Time is really precious. Do not waste by making irresponsible demand, which is untenable. Remember the proverbial phrase Rome was not built in day. Nagaland will set on the path of development when the leaders, who can feel the pulse of common masses are elected.
