IMPHAL, November 11:  There are various things to learn from history and definitely learning history teaches values. If the facts are true, it teaches true values, otherwise it would lead to disinformation, said Deputy Chief Minister Gaikhangam.

He made the statement at the inaugural function of the 34th Annual Conference of the North East India History Association (NEIHA) at the Centenary Hall, Manipur University today.

 Addressing the gathering Gaikhangam said that history plays a great role in shaping values and beliefs and that every ethnic possesses its own distinct history.

In the present period, history datas have been abused and re-invented for social engineering and political games and even to incite conflicts, he said.

He further said that history is important for tracing past information of mankind, civilization, culture and then conveyed to the present generation, he added that it is the process of simplifying which supported by fact and base on evidence.

However, we have to be careful in presenting history which has consequences in place like Manipur residing mosaics of ethnic community and multi lingual communities and the historians and the social scientists have to work hard on findings facts about the past.

Further, he lauded NEIHA and its organizing committee for organizing such function.

Vice chancellor of Manipur University, Prof H Nandakumar Sarma said NEIHA has played an important role in the present era and keep on updating about the past for the present generation and for future generation.

NEIHA has got supported from out the country and the association is publishing articles which are in great demand both from the country and abroad.

Speaking at the function Prof Tamo Mibang stated that teaching of history is becoming more relevant in the society and history is a universal academic discipline not the rival of any academic disciplines, therefore, it is the store house in which all disciplines dwell together.

He continued that it is the treasure house of human knowledge and in other word it is the cement that binds together all the studies relating to the human nature, their trails, tribulations and achievement for centuries.

IMPHAL, November 11: The death body of Chandam Momon, 63 year old vegetable vendor who was mercilessly murder for her valuable belongings, have been claimed by the family this evening after having conducted post mortem at the RIMS mortuary.

Meanwhile, the accused Ningthoujam Thoinu alias Heinu, 23, daughter of Kumar of Napet Palli Mamang Leikai, was remanded to 10 days police custody by the duty magistrate, Letkho Kipgen, yesterday.

It may be recalled that the partly decomposed body of Momon was discovered in her rented room at Napet Palli on November 8.

Before taking to her native place at Ikou, the lifeless body of Chandam was taken to Napet Palli wherein friends, well wisher and members of JAC converge and organised a mourning ceremony at Ikou Bazaar.

A brief protest was also staged wherein womenfolk bearing placards chanted slogan demanding befitting punishment (hanged till death) to the culprit.

Civil bodies like Chingtam Peace and Development Organisations (CPDO), Poirei Leimarol Apunba Meira Paibi Lup, Sawombung, Young Women Health Organisation (YWHO), Ikou Youth Club, Village Development Committee Ikou Bazaar, also attended the protest.

Expressing their concerned over deteriorating increasing crime rate, the CSOs urged the authority concerned to give the perpetrator the severest of punishment considering the gravity of the crime.
