IMPHAL, February 26: The State government has allotted 25,000 square feet of land near the existing IT Park at Mantripukhi to set up a SEZ for IT firms in pursuance of its IT policy, stated Chief Minister Okram Ibobi.

The Chief Minister made the statement in response to a calling attention motion by Kh Joykisan, a Trinamool MLA elected from the Thangmeiband assembly constituency, on the irregularities in cellular phone service provided to the people of Manipur during the second day of the 10th session of the tenth Manipur Legislative Assembly today.

He said before establishing a permanent IT complex, the IT Park at Mantripukhi will soon be turned into an IT hub. The Park will provide employment to the State`™s unemployed youths through the internet. But cellular phone service providers have faced an acute shortage of power supply in the State. After the completion of the 400 KV Power Station at Silchar, the power sector in the State will improve.

All the mobile towers in the State would be provided with solar power energy as a secondary source of power. BSNL, Airtel, Aircel, Vodafone etc are not under the State government`™s control but the Telecom Regulation Authority of India (TRAI), said Chief Minister. TRAI controls the overall activities of the service providers. The State has a limited role in the improvement of telephone and internets facilities etc.

He further said that there are two committees of which one is a State level committee led by the chief secretary while there is another at the district level led by deputy commissioners of all the districts

The Thangmeiband A/C MLA has alleged that the telecommunication facilities have failed in the state, asking the reason behind the slowdown of the internet speed which is not able to reach even 50 percent of its potential speed. Even as the service providers continue to collect their bills, BPOs and KPOs in the State have failed completely.

If the internet provide sufficiently the educated young youths can provide job to them. The state government can encourage the unemployed educated youth in our state, said Joykisan MLA Thangmeiband.
