The stance of Iron Lady of Manipur – a pyrrhic victory

After sixteen plus years of fast in protest against the dreaded spine-chilling Malom Massacre on Nov 2, 2000 where 10 innocent lives were mowed down by Assam Rifles personnel, it seems, Irom Sharmila Chanu, the Iron Lady of Manipur has gone butter startling everyone in Manipur and the world with her sudden revelation that she’d discontinue her fast. Nobody expected that after all those years of fast, she’d make such a rowdy decision, a decision to enter politics as her platform to fight against AFSPA, 1958 and make her dreams come true.

Meitei meets Madrasi !

(contd from previous issue)
‘Wow!” he exclaimed tasting the gunpowder. He had a hearty laugh when we explained the nick name of gunpowder given to the idly powder. We in our house generally do not use much spice (chilly), hence our gunpowder may not qualify to be actually called so, we explained. Idly powder is available readymade in the shops. We have to only mix oil with it and it is ready, we gave tips to make his dosai taste better. The chutney my wife had prepared was not the usual coconut chutney served in hotels; as it tasted different, Mr. Reagan Singh like it much. As a finale, we offered coffee, but he said he was full.

(contd from previous issue)
Basket with a hole
The food basket of Manipur is losing its content through a hole at the bottom. The farmers are no more interested in farming. They have lost confidence in farming as a source of livelihood. Farmland has been sold off to businessmen who construct brick and mortar structures and claim the land for commercial activities. Though Manipur Conservation of Paddy Land and Wetland act 2014 caps diversion of paddy land for construction of houses (but not for commercial activities) of the land owners to 0.2 acre in a Panchayat area or 0.1 acre in a Municipal area, there is rampant violation, if the mushrooming schools, shops and other structures are any indications. Such diversions disturb the ecology of the soil in the proximity.
