AIZAWL 14 June,2015: With the signing of ceasefire between the centre and the eight Mizo insurgent groups under the banner of United People’s Front (UPF) on Tuesday last, the talks with the groups was ungraded to political level from official level, according to former Mizoram chief minister Zoramthanga.
Zoramthanga, who was present in Delhi during the signing of the Suspension of Operations (SoO) told PTI here today that delays in peace talks between the centre and the ethnic Mizo militant groups was harming mutual trusts between the two sides.

“Years have passed after signing SoO earlier, but without any formal parleys,” he said, adding that the groups did not sign SoO during the last nine months making the situation explosive in the north east”, he said.

The former revolutionary leader said that he helped in brokering peace between the groups and the government of India without actually participating in the talks. He said that his main role was to create mutual trust between the groups and the centre, lacking due to prolonged hostilities between the two sides.

“I did not want to be called as interlocutor or as any official mediator as my main role was to build mutual trust between the two sides,” he said.

The UPF constituents were the Kuki National Front (KNF), Zomi Revolutionary Army (ZRO), Kuki Revolutionary Army (United), Zomi Defence Force (ZDF), United Kuki Liberation Front (UKLF), Kuki Revolutionary Front (KRF), Zomi Defence Volunteers (ZDV) and Hmar People’s Convention (Democrats), he said.

The militant groups headed by UPF chairman S T Thangboi were represented by leaders of the groups while the centre was represented by Ministry of Home Affairs officials headed by Sambhu Singh, joint secretary (north east) of the MHA.

Earlier, Zoramthanga, went to Myanmar and Bangkok two times to broker peace between the Myanmar government and 17 ethnic-based insurgent groups in that country.

It is indeed a deep pleasure to see the way our state has been highlighted on an international platform, by our very own people, who have soul-stirring ties with their region even after crossing thousand borders. Glimpses of North east India an event organized by the North east Indians in the UK announced its grand success. This event came as a massive eye-opener where all North Eastern’s caught upon an opportunity to present the beauty of their respective states to the western world. The whole idea backing this informal event was to bring all the north easterners, mainland Indians and westerners under one umbrella to promote awareness of NE India and also to promote tourism of the unexplored beauty of North eastern and to share the firmly implanted culture and impassioned connection. More to that trying to establish grounds to attract them to North East India and experience the grandeur themselves.

Nothing can beat the originality of people and fetish they posess  for their home land which is always visible in such occasions .That innate passion of North-Easterners to excel everywhere, is kind of free flow.

A huge step taken by our fellow people in UK to think ahead, with motives to enhance each State’s magnificence. The evening was supposedly one of its kind with multimedia presentations from each state, followed by live music by talented North Eastern’s in UK and then the typical NE cuisines namely: Bamboo shoot, rice, momo’s , Singju……Yum. The presentations for the evening focussed on boasting about the beauty of all states through slides on rural tourism, cultural diversity, lofty snow-capped mountains, green landscapes dotted with picturesque villages, monasteries and a rich tribal cultivation crotched with vibrant accents. The audience seemed to have been mesmerized much to see a broader version of what North-East India had in its platter to offer, we are a gorgeous lovely hidden, yet to be explored gem of India, are we not?

Lien Gangte from Manipur one of the organizers, hosted the show with a twist of humour clubbed with gloating about each State’s magnificence.

ZRO president calls for unity among Zo Suan tribe

By Alex Guite
LAMKA, July 14: The Zomi Reunification Organisation, ZRO president Thanglianpau Guite who is also the general secretary of United People Front, UPF has said that he is an ardent supporter of unity among the tribal, particularly the Zomi and the Kuki goup.

Speaking to a select group of media at their base camp at Songtal Village, he said it was the right time for the movement when he took up revolutionary cause of the Zomi-Zosuan in 1993.

He said he was however, saddened by the ways of UPF and KNO of accentuating the little differences while ignoring the bigger similarities among the tribes, which has only provided pasture for those wanting to divide them.

He called for a unity oriented vision which will help in making their collective voice heard instead on meddling in narrow politics.

“We are fighting for an ‘unborn child’ and the name should be only decided after it is successful,” he said while referring to the various demands including a Kuki State or Zomi based names.

“Make no mistake, but we the descendants of Zo or Zomi, especially the non-Naga tribes of Manipur and elsewhere,” he asserted.

He continued we are the sons of Zo and the name Kuki is a “Bengali corrupted word” and came in used only after the British came to the hills of the present day Manipur.

Guite said, “We should look for unity and shun such nomenclature, for if such a nomenclature was to take centre stage, divisions are bound to challenge the common cause.”

On the question of the State government’s plan to implement the NLUP based on the Mizoram model in the hills of Manipur, Guite said that it is a development oriented Act and should be welcomed by all and that it has nothing to do with the Village Development Council.

“I’m a chief of a village myself, but there is an urgent need to reform the chieftainship as it is synonymous with dictatorship,” the leader said before quickly adding that until it is reformed, the people will have no real independence even though India had celebrated more than 60 Independence Day for the chief can do anything in his village.

He said it is our politician’s hunger for getting elected that is dividing the tribes particularly the Zo Suan and unless both the UPF and the KNO work in unison nothing momentous will be achieved.

He added that at several forums, he had himself champion unity with the “brothers who call themselves Kuki.”

While lauding the work of COPTAM, he observed it is unfortunate that some villages which fall under Churachandpur district are paying revenue to the Bishnupur administration.

“We already have a God given identity in Zo Suan, nevertheless, we continue to differ on the name, which needs to be look at at the earliest, if we want to succeed in our demands for a Zomi Autonomous Hill State or the Kuki State,” he continued.

The president also said that any demands of the Zo Suan would be very hard to achieve without the Nagas, as much as it is for the Nagas to achieve theirs without the Zo Suan.

KOHIMA, Jan 3 (NEPS): Nagaland Governor Dr Ashwani Kumar warned the dangers of corruption that had been plaguing the society and pointed out that it simply could not be rooted out without serious reformation from home, schools, colleges and societies.
He said this while releasing a book titled, “A Walk to Emmaus – A Journey of Attitudinal Change” written by Jonas Yanthan here on Friday at Raj Bhavan, Kohima. He said the “solution to corruption lies with the parents, teachers and societies.” The children should be first given human values by their parents in their respective homes, while ethics and values should be further taught in schools, colleges and universities, the Governor explained and further said once they were fully given these values and ethics, they would be able to fight various corrupt ways in the societies. Finally they would be the prime movers in the journey to eradicate this dreaded menace, he added.

Recalling as to how the churches in Mizoram played their roles in the recently concluded state elections in checking corruptions. The churches in Mizoram put up boards in villages with various guidelines to be observed by the candidates and later it was reported that there were least election related expenditures in Mizoram, he added.
Dr Kumar said their churches in Nagaland too could emulate Mizoram churches and expressed the hope that they would be able to do Mirozam way in the coming elections in the State.
The Governor, while lauding Yanthan for writing the book, “A Walk to Emmaus – A Journey of Attitudinal Change,” wished more new books to come in future not only by the author but also other local authors. He also said he was the first to receive the book and enjoyed reading.
Earlier, the author gave a brief background of the book. “We need a change of attitude and that’s why everyone talks about it with the hope of making our lives better but the desired change is not forthcoming,” he said explaining that the reason for that was “because attitudinal change cannot come about unless we begin talking to the minds of the people since corruption is an attitude.”
Stating that the book was an attempt to understand the Bible critically as they drew primarily from it, Yanthan narrated that for such thing a science called hermeneutics was employed to understand the scriptural language, reality of life and what language was as a mode of communication.
He further expressed that the focal objective of the book was a genuine though humble in its effort to bring about the much needed attitudinal change. The lady wife of the Governor also attended the occasion, besides Lotha Hoho leaders, members of the Press and family members of the author.
