IMPHAL, Dec 7 NNN: In Manipur, violence against women is getting higher with the period between January and October of the current year has recorded a total of 269 cases of violence against women, stated M Sobita, secretary, Women for Action (WAD) Friday.
\nSobita was addressing a 1-day consultative meet on \u201cRole of Media in Eliminating Violence against Women\u201d organized by WAD at Hotel Imphal.
\nShe said there were 269 cases of violence against women in the state during the period between January and October of the current year as per record maintained by WAD based on the reports published by local newspapers.
\nThe above cases include 21 rape cases, two rape and murder cases, 16 suicide cases, seven molestation cases, four kidnapping cases, 56 missing cases and 78 trafficking cases,\u00a0 Sobita who was attending the meet as a resource person, said.
\nThis year\u2019s cases of violence against women exceeds the preceding years and this clearly shows that violence against women in the state has gone up gradually, Sobita maintained.
\nU Nabakishwore, secretary, Centre for Social Development, who was also speaking at the meet as a resource person, alleged that security forces countering militancy in the state are also committing crimes against women and acknowledged that the people have been able to point out the facts about such crimes through the media.
\nThe consultative meet was organised by WAD as part of the \u201cInternational Fortnight Observation Protesting Violence against Women\u201d which is held on November 25-December 10 every year across the globe.
\nThis year\u2019s edition of the observation is underway under the theme \u201cFrom Peace in the Home to Peace in the World: Let\u2019s Challenge Militarism and End Violence against Women.\u201d For Manipur, the observation will continue till December 12, that is, Nupilal Day.<\/p>\n\n
