SHILLONG, Sept 9 NNN : Agitation in protest against the non-implementation of Inner Line Permit system in Meghalaya intensifies.
\nExpressing stiff opposition against the State government Meghalaya\u2019s \u2018adamant attitude\u2019 towards the implementation of Inner Line Permit system in the state, several groups pressing for the immediate implementation of the Inner Line Permit (ILP) in the state today announced for a four-day \u2018night road-blockade\u2019 from September 10, even as they threatened to intensify their stir.
\nThe Mukul Sangma government wanted other mechanisms instead of implementation of the Inner Line Permit (ILP) to control the influx issue in Meghalaya but the civil society organisations rejected the state government\u2019s proposal.
\nKhasi Students Union (KSU) vice president Fredrick Kharmawphlang informed, \u201cWe have decided to call for a four days night blockade, as a move to intensify our stir to protest against the State government\u2018s failure to implement the inner line permit (ILP) in the state which is as per recommendation of the High Level Committee on Influx (HCLI),\u201d
\nThe night road-blockade starting from September 10, 11, 12 and 13 (from 7 pm to 5 am) will be effective in all the eleven districts of Meghalaya, he said.
\nThe decision was taken at a meeting of the ten pressure groups after the statewide office picketing which has affected the normal functioning of the government machineries concluded on Saturday last. The agitations by the groups have started since Monday last with a 12 hours bandh and three days night road blockade following their talks with government failed.
\nKharmawphlang said, \u201cWe still stand by our demand that the State government should immediately put the ILP effective in the entire state.\u201d
\nHe however said, \u201cMassive agitational programmes are on the cards in the coming days, if the government does not change its attitude on the issue.
\nWe will announce our next course of action after the September 13,\u201d adding \u201cWill fight till our demand is achieved.\u201d
\nAppreciating the public for their support, the vice president further stated however, \u201cWe appeal to all the people of the state including the government employees to continue to extend their support and cooperation on the issue.\u201d
\nMeanwhile, the Khun Hynniewtrep National Awakening Movement (KHNAM) has staged a one day sit in demonstration today to express stiff opposition and to create awareness on the need to implement the ILP system in the state.<\/p>\n\n
