IMPHAL, Feb 2 MNS NNN:As held in others, world wetland observation organized by Peoples awareness for national advancement was held at Lamphelpat today.
Gracing the occasion as chief guest, N. Biren, MLA said we should think for the future generation.
If Lamphelpat is made as water body as usual, the flood problem in Imphal city will be decreased.
The flood in and around of Lamphelpat is caused due to the ecological imbalance.
Instead of developing Lamphelpat, the construction now taken up has become a hurdle in saving the lake. We have to do sincerely, he also further said.
Environmentalists spoke on the issue of wetland. Loktak Development Authority (LDA) has on Saturday proposed that maintaining of rivers, which are main sources of water for Loktak Lake, is necessary in order to save the largest freshwater lake in North East India.
Addressing the World Wetland Day 2013 observation function held at Khordak Junior High School complex in Bishnupur district, LDA Project Coordinator Ng Sanajaoba underscored the need for proper maintaining of rivers in the state which are main sources of water for Loktak Lake.
The observation was jointly organized by LDA, Sangai Protection Forum, Keibul Lamjao,, Environmental Social Information, Keibul Lamjao, Unique Wild Life Protection Committee, Sekmaijin and Centre for Conservation of Nature and Cultivation of Science, Ningthoukhong.
This year’s edition of the International Wetland Day was observed under the theme “Wetland Take Care of Water.”
Giving the keynote address, Sanajaoba said, “Maintenance of water sources of Loktak Lake was utmost necessary on top of the range of steps being taken up by different NGOs in Manipur for the upbringing of the lake, but that in line with that the LDA has started taking up steps under a new plan called River Basin Management.”
He said that initially a few environmentalists and individuals worked hard to save the lake with their own efforts, but that now more or less the people had willingly joined to save it.
He also alerted that parts of the lake like Pumlen, Khoidum, Ikop and Kharung were getting worse day by day and these watercourses of the lake might vanish soon.
February 2 is observed as International Wetland Day across the globe every year since the resolution taken at the International Wetlands Convention held at Ramsar in Iran in 1972.
Loktak has also been officially included in International Wetland Ramsar Site.Thanga constituency MLA T Mangibabu, LDA Project Director Th Ibobi, Moirang Khunou Zillad Parishad member N Indira Devi, Thanga Zilla Parishad member N Dinesh, Uchiwa Zilla Parishad member O Borni Devi among others also attended the function.
The day was also observed in different parts of the state.

IMPHAL, February 2: As a part of the World Wetland day celebration 2013,  the day was also celebrated in the state today at Khordak Junior High School under the theme “Wet land and water management” along with the slogan of “Wet lands take care of water” organized by the Loktak Development Authority (LDA) in association with the Environmental Social Reformation and Sangai Protection Forum, Keibul Lamjao , the Unique Welfare Protection Committee, Sekmaijing and the Centre for Conservation of Nature and Cultivation of Science, Ningthoukhong.

Giving a key note address of the celebration, Project Coordinator Ng Sanajaoba said that as a part of the evolution of the earth it is very important to observe the day. He further pointed out the day has been observed all over the world from the year 1997 after delegates and the environmentalists across countries passed a resolution to protect and preserve wet lands in a conference meeting held at the Iranian city of  Ramsar in  197.

” We  need to have a farsighted vision for our future generations to save the Loktak Lake and other wetland area of the state,” he said

Speaking as a resource person, Environmentalist Dr Shamungou said that conserving wet lands  is very critical since the major issue of conflict between people will be over water resources.  Noting that global warming and climate change is now a reality all over the world, he said that this was the main reason that Manipur is facing very less rainfall last year.

During the observation today, a quiz competition related to the theme was also held.

Meanwhile, the All Loktak lake Area Fishermen’s Union and Environment & Human Development, Manipur jointly organized the World Wetlands Day 2013 at Ching-Lak Bazar, Thanga.

The observation was co-organised by Forum of Indigenous Perspective and Action, Center for Organization Research and Education, Indian National Trust for Art and Culture Heritage, Citizen Concern for Dams and Development and IPAK film production. The World wetlands day 2013 was observed with the theme ‘wetlands take care of water’.

In a press release, the Environment and Human Development, EHUD  said that Loktak Lake is under severe threat due to Ithai Dam operation by NHPC.

It is also mentioned that the Manipur Loktak Lake Protection Act, 2006 is working against the fishing community depending on the Lake.

Today’s observation was dedicated to raise awareness about the lake and the Act by conducting essay, painting, poetry competition and debating in relation with the day. The whole competition was focused on how to save Loktak Lake of Manipur.
