Delhi, Feb. 23 (ANI): The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Saturday confirmed that Mohamed Nasheed left the premises of the High Commission of India, Male, today and hoped that the former President of Maldives will resume his social and political life. “Mohamed Nasheed, former President of Maldives, had left the premises of the High […]

Delhi, Feb. 23 (ANI): The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Saturday confirmed that Mohamed Nasheed left the premises of the High Commission of India, Male, today and hoped that the former President of Maldives will resume his social and political life.
“Mohamed Nasheed, former President of Maldives, had left the premises of the High Commission of India at 4.15 p.m. today. It will be recalled that the former President had entered the Indian Mission in Male on February 13, 2013 on his own volition and had similarly decided to leave on his own. It is hoped that with this development the former President will again resume his social and political life,” said MEA official spokesperson Syed Akbaruddin.
“The visiting Indian delegation led by Harsh Vardhan Shringla, Joint Secretary, Ministry of External Affairs and the High Commissioner of India to Maldives had held a series of meeting with the officials of the Government of Maldives and other stake holders in this context. The Government of India wishes to thank all those who have cooperated Dearin these efforts,” he added.
Akbaruddin said India has been working closely with the Government and other relevant stakeholders in Maldives to strengthen the democratic framework of the country. India has maintained broad based contacts with all political parties and democratic institutions in Maldives without interfering in its internal affairs.
“The Government of India urges all parties to maintain peace and calm and hopes to continue its positive engagement in the spirit of the close and friendly relations between the two countries,” he added.
Akbaruddin further said External Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid has conveyed to his Maldivian counterpart that India has traditional and age old ties of friendship and cooperation with Maldives.
“India would be happy to support all efforts to create favourable conditions for free, fair, credible and inclusive Presidential elections in September 2013 that can contribute to durable peace, stability and prosperity in Maldives and the region,” he added.
The External Affairs Minister had earlier this month said that India is in touch with the Maldives government and is eager to find an early end to the Maldivian crisis after the former Maldives President Mohamed Nasheed, sought refuge at the Indian High Commission in Male fearing arrest.
Mohamed Nasheed entered the High Commission of India on February 13 when an arrest warrant was issued after he failed to attend the court for what he called a politically motivated trial aimed at disqualifying him from participating in the presidential election slated for September 7.

Imphal, Feb. 23 (MNS NNN ANI): Heavy polling was reported from the two poll-bound states from northeast region, as around 88 percent voters exercised their franchise in Meghalaya, while 83.27 percent in Nagaland at the end of the polling on Saturday.

“The whole procedures went peacefully except few sporadic incidents in both the states, and the people exercised their franchise in large numbers. As per the information till now, 88 percent voting has been recorded in Meghalaya, while in Nagaland it is 83.27 percent. The voting percentage will go high because as people are still in queues waiting for their turn at some places,” said Chief Electoral Officer Alok Shukla .ontrary to earlier apprehension of violent pollings in Nagaland, it was a comparatively peaceful and brisk polling with 83% turn-out in the state.
Elections were held to the 59 assembly constituencies as the Sadar I constituency has been counter-manded following the demise of one of its contenders P Chuba Chang yesterday. Now, it has been fixed that the poll in that constituency will be held on March 23.
The Polling of Tuensang Sadar I Assembly Constituency under Tuensang district, which was ‘Adjourned’ following the death of the Congress candidate P. Chuba Chang Yesterday, has been rescheduled on March 23.
The contest has been more or less the Naga People’s Front (NPF) and the Congress party with straight fights between the two parties in 20 assembly constituencies.
Joint Chief Electoral Officer of Nagaland N Moa Aier told some media persons that the 2013 assembly elections were one of the most peaceful and smooth polls in recent time though the percentage of voters turn-out was a bit higher in 2008 with 85%.
Meanwhile, stray incidents were reported in Mokokchung district and in parts of Dimapur. “However, those are not considered serious,” said an official. At Duncan in Dimapur, media persons rushed there as there was a report that imminent show-down was about to take place between the supporters of the NPF and that of the Congress. But when the scribes reached there, things were already calmed by the alert security personnel.
There has been a total number of 11.9 lakh voters in Nagaland of which 6 lakhs are males and 5.9 voters are females.
In all, 187 candidates are in the fray with two women candidates vying for the 60 seats.
The NPF is contesting in all the 60 assembly constituencies while the Congress party will be contesting in 57 constituencies. There are altogether 39 independent candidates while NCP has fielded in 15 constituencies. The BJP will be contesting in 11 seats while JD(U) has fielded in 3 seats. RJD will be contesting only in two seats while (UNDP) will be contesting only in one constituencies.
At Meghalaya the 36-hour bandh call by the banned Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC) had little impact as people across Meghalaya defied their bandh call and turned out in large numbers to vote in the 36 assembly constituencies in the eastern part of Meghalaya.
Polling began at 7 am this morning in all the 2,485 polling booths .
At least, six people had used Rule 49-0 under The Conduct of
Elections Rules, 1961 to record the desire not to vote. ‘Six voters in different assembly constituencies have used Rule 49-O since we are not satisfied with the candidates contesting in the elections,’ Civil Society Women’s Organisation Chief Agnes Kharshiing said.
As per the Rules, if a voter, after his electoral roll number has been entered in the register of voters in form 17-A, expresses his desire not to vote, a remark to this effect shall be made in Form 17A by the presiding officer and the signature or thumb impression of the elector shall be obtained against such remark.
The electoral fortunes of 331 candidates, including 25 women and 122 Independents, would be decided by about 12,30,152, voters, including 6,25,534 females.
The United Democratic Party and the National People’s Party have fielded 50 and 32 candidates across the state respectively. Other smaller parties like the Hill State People’s Democratic Party have fielded 17candidates.
Amongst the national parties, the Nationalist Congress Party is contesting in 21 seats, BJP in 13 and the Samajwadi Party has fielded candidates in 11 constituencies.
Altogether, 9940 polling officials have been deployed in their respective zones to oversee the smooth conduct of polls.
Of the 2,485 polling booths, 842 have been termed hyper-sensitive and 257 as sensitive.
91 companies of paramilitary troopers have been deployed across the state to ensure free and fair polls. Mawlai assembly constituency has the highest voter concentration of with 33,869, including 8,594 female voters, while Dalu constituency has the lowest number of voters 15,979 with 7,940 female voters.
The ruling Congress has fielded 60 candidates in all constituencies is hoping for an absolute majority to provide a stable and transparent government. The United Democratic Party and the National People’s Party have fielded 50 and 32 candidates across the state respectively. Other parties like the Hill State People’s Democratic Partyhave fielded 17candidates.

IMPHAL, Feb 23 NNN: Re-asserting its proposed indefinite public blockade which is to begin from February 24 midnight, the Kuki State Demand Committee (KSDC) on Saturday said it would go ahead with the strike as scheduled earlier.
“The strike will be imposed as announced earlier,” S George Guite, information secretary, KSDC said.
However, he said movement and transportation of students appearing in the ensuing HSLC exam will be exempted from the purview of the strike.
The public blockade will also relax water supply, media and medical emergencies, Guite said.
The KSDC leader has already announced that the BCIM (Bangladesh- China- India-Myanmar) car rally will not be allowed to pass through the Kuki majority areas in Manipur during the strike.
The car rally has been scheduled to Imphal on February 26.
KSDC has been demanding a separate Kuki state within Manipur and urging both Manipur and Central Governments to start peace process with the Kuki National Organisation (KNO) and United People’s Front (UPF), the two umbrella organizations of various Kuki militant outfits in the state.

GSI has made phenomenonal contributions in the mineral sector and is carrying out systematic investigation for mineral resource assessment of the country in geologically potential areas through modern and sophisticated exploration methods involving modern geological mapping techniques, geomorphological and lineament mapping through study of satellite imageries, aero and ground geophysical studies and geochemical mapping. As part of this GSI has initiated extensive programme of modernization on the advice of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Industries, and as per guidelines laid down by an Expert Panel on Modernization of GSI. The modernization programme is aimed to improve the regional exploration for assessment of natural resources by infusion of latest state of art technology. The technology infusion envisaged during the 12th Five Year Plan period is”
Strengthening of the state of the art equipment in chemical laboratories like ICP-MS, ICP-AES to match world standard in precision and also facilitate logical conclusion of mineral exploration within scheduled time.
Modernization and augmentation of equipment for ground geophysical survey like multi-channel gamma ray spectrometry, multi frequency EM system etc.
High-end petrological instrument for diamond, strategic and PGE exploration.
State of the art drilling machine (reverse circulation, hydraulic etc.).
In order to improve the quality of exploration for mineral resources of the country, following equipment / instruments were procured or in the process of procurement as per the plan:
Airborne surveys including airborne magnetic, electromagnetic and gamma-ray surveys have proved quite useful in identifying first order target areas worldwide and may be used as direct tool in exploration. The airborne survey is strengthened by procurement of heliborne multi-sensor airborne survey system comprising on board sensors like magnetic, gravity, time domain electromagnetic (TDEM) and gamma ray spectrometry and hyper spectrometry.
Application of geochemistry to mineral exploration, adopting conventional as well as advanced geochemical techniques, in soil surveys, stream-sediment surveys, vapour surveys and bedrock surveys has proved useful in detection of dispersion haloes of hidden ore bodies. To strengthen the geochemical exploration GSI has upgraded its regional laboratories by procurement of sophisticated instruments like ICPMS, EPMA etc. for low detection analytical determinations particularly for elements like gold, PGE, rare earth etc.
Application of time-tested geophysical techniques in locating concealed deposits is considered as one of the most effective exploration tools. Ground geophysical survey is being strengthened by procuring new sophisticated instruments like Multi electrode resistivity-IP unit, multi frequency EM profiling unit etc.
GSI has procured magneto telluric (MT) instrument to strengthen its geophysical survey over Indian craton to image the sub continental lithospheric mantle (SCLM). The outcome of the survey will enhance the scientific knowledge of the deeper parts of the earth and will help to model the process of craton formation more accurately which in turn will help in targeting concealed ore bodies/kimberlite bodies (KCR)
GSI carries out offshore surveys and mineral resource evaluation in the EEZ and TW. To strengthen the marine survey GSI is procuring one deep Ocean Going Research Vessel from M/s Hyundai Heavy Industries, South Korea. This will help in assessing the mineral/natural resources present in EEZ of our country.
The details of technological upgradation with adequate instrumental back up is as follows:
In the field of Thematic Geological Mapping (TGM), the technology infusion that has been envisaged includes: Field Laptop, or Table PC, Mapping GPS unit, GSI Portal, mobile mapping vans with portable generator.
In view of completion of systematic geological mapping over the country, an Integrated Thematic Mapping (ITM) has been visualized with required technology infusion that includes: Ground Penetration Radars [GPR], shallow drills, deep drills, Electron Probe Micro Analyzer etc.
As a redressal measure for effective analytical output with lower detection limits of geochemical samples, augmentation of the state of the art instruments such as ICPMS, AAS, XRF and DMA, in the laboratories of GSI has been incorporated.
In the field of geophysical mapping, the technology infusion that is being proposed includes high precision gravimeter and total field magnetometer.
For hyperspectral mapping, Space borne and Airborne Hyperion data with specific spectral range (necessary for geological objects) are to be procured and utilized. In this context, it is contemplated to have a continuous acquisition of hyperspectral data in collaboration with ISRO/ NRSG/NNRMS.
To enhance the pace of drilling and quality/reliability of subsurface information, it is necessary to induct improved techniques and equipment such as reverse circulation drilling with inbuilt system for controlled deflection of borehole path and adopting a combination of coring and non-coring operations in a single borehole. Rotary Air Blast (RAB) drilling which is fastest and cheap method is also to be inducted. State of the art drilling machines such as reverse circulation, hydraulic rigs, etc., are in the process of procurement.
