IMPHAL, Apr 10 NNN: Women’s Committee of the United NGO’s Mission Manipur (UNMM) today said the committee was not satisfied with the statement of Manipur Director General of Police (DGP) Y Joykumar that the sensational Dr Ningombam Satyabhama murder case had been nearly solved following arrest of three accused. Addressing a press conference at the Manipur Press Club here, M Sobita, convenor, UNMM, Women’s Committee, rejected the statement of the police chief that Satyabama murder case had been nearly solved after the arrest of three accused yesterday.
She said proper investigation into the case is highly needed as the circumstances that led to the death of Satyabama, who was a Junior Research Fellow of DBT Project in Pathology at Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), was not clear. It is worth noting that Manipur Police pulled up three accused in the Satyabama murder case yesterday. They were Toijam James, Thoudam Jeevan and Kshetrimayum Biju.
Claiming that Manipur state has witnessed such cases now and then, Sobita said the law has never done justice or punished the guilty. “It is very important that the Satyabama murder case is appropriately probed and discovered whether Ksh Biju, the main accused in the murder was a paid killer,” she demanded.
She further pointed out that Mahindra Rodeo, a two-wheeler is a small vehicle while Satyabama was a well-built woman with more than 5 ft tall and rubbished the statement by Biju that he took her on the two-wheeler and dumped the body in a field after the murder. Sobita also said that the statement of the DGP did not mention the places from where the trio was pulled up and neither had he disclosed other details. The women organization leader also demanded that a political will be created by various political parties in the state by convening an all party meeting on the issue which sparked statewide agitation for several days.
“A fast track court should also be set up in the state in order to dispose all the criminal cases committed against women,” she further demanded.
She also blamed the Government CID, intelligence wing and legal experts of the state for keeping mum on the issue.

Imphal April 10 MNS NNN: Suspected militants reportedly shot dead two persons, including a Manipur Police commando jawan at Gogajang village along Indo-Myanmar border in Chandel district of Manipur on Wednesday. Police identified the deceased commando jawan as Thangjam Birjit, 33, a native Jiribam’s Ningthembam Makha Leikai. He was a rifleman of 3rd IRB but attached to Thoubal district police commando and posted at Moreh.
The civilian who was killed along with Birjit in the attack was identified as Chanambam Anil, 38, a resident of Premnagar, Moreh Ward Number 5. He was stated to be an autorickshaw driver. Both the bodies were found in a deep gorge at Gogajang village closed to the Indo-Burma fencing of the Manipur side early morning. It is located about 7 km north of Moreh Police Station.
Their hands were tight on their backs. They received multiple bullet wounds and several cut marks probably caused by club were also seen on the bodies. The duo might have been seriously clubbed before they were shot to death, according to police.
Birjit had reportedly left the post around 11 am yesterday along with his eight friends for fishing in the Maklang River on the Myanmar side about 9 km north of Moreh Police Station. At about 1 pm the same day, the assailants reportedly informed one of the friends of Anil over phone that the nine persons, including Birjit had been abducted by them.
However, the suspected militants did not disclose the place where they kept them in captivity. Then around 6 am Wednesday, Birjit and Anil were found dead in the gorge before their friends, all from Premnagar, were freed later in the afternoon.
The police are still clueless about the motive of the killing and kidnapping. It is also still not certain which outfit was responsible for the killing. Meanwhile, decrying the killing, the Meitei Council, Moreh (MCM) organized a public rally in the commercial town Moreh. The demonstration was participated by hundreds of Moreh town residents.
Moreh police retrieved the bodies and later taken them to Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) for autopsy. A police report said that the two deceased along with seven others have gone for fishing at Lokchao river which is known as Maklang river by the Burmese (Myanmarese), marking the international border between the two countries yesterday (Tuesday) and found dead with bullet injury marks at Guagajang village on the Indian side and seven kilometer from Moreh police station.
The seven others who were released this late afternoon were identified as Thangjam Ahanjao (28) of Moreh ward no. 5, Khaidem Deven (37) of Moreh ward no. 5, Sorokhaibam Bhogendro (29) of Moreh ward no. 4, Paonam Bhim of Moreh ward no. 4, Paonam Mote (31) of Moreh Ward no. 4, Saleibam Tanu (24) of Moreh ward no. 4 and Aheibam Dinesh of Moreh ward no. 3. As per the statements of the seven people, they were held captive by a Manipur based undisclosed armed rebel group. Rohit Kapoor
The first thing when we hear about coir comes to our mind is traditional items like mats, baskets and ropes, but it is not the case anymore.
With the changing times and growing charm for eco-friendly products, the golden fibre is finding new applications and is also being preferred in road construction.
With increasing deforestation affecting the environment, the biodegradable geotextiles is being used in the construction of roads.
The major reasons for increased use of the natural fibre are sustainability and cost-effectiveness.
Coir (coconut fiber) geotextiles are a popular solution for erosion control, slope stabilisation and bioengineering, due to the fabric’s substantial mechanical strength.
Classified as woven, meshes, nets and non-wovens,, it lasts about 3 to 5 years depending on the fabric weight. It also degrades into humus, thus, enriching the soil.
Coir Geotextiles when used on the soft soil for construction of village roads have been found to perform very well as reinforcement, filter, drainage and separation materials in comparison to the conventionally used materials like synthetics, cement, lime, etc.
The National Rural Roads Development Agency (NRRDA) has approved Central Coir Research Institute (CCRI) as a nodal institute for application of Coir Geotextiles in construction of rural roads.
Indian Roads Congress (IRC), New Delhi has also given the accreditation for the use of Coir Geotextiles in the roads for a period of 2 years with effect from 18 April, 2011.
For the evaluation of its effectiveness, inter-alia a collaborative project has been initiated by the Central Coir Research Institute with the National Institute of Technology, Calicut with the in-principle approval of the Airports Authority of India.
The government has already decided to use coir geo-textiles for construction of rural roads in nine states, under the Prime Minister’s Gram Sadak Yojana (Bharat Nirman). In the future, the project is likely to be extended to all 28 states of the country.
Given the popularity of the golden fibre in construction of roads, the coir industry may face problems in catering to the huge likely demands unless adequate measures are taken by the industry to have a decentralised production infrastructure to cater to the huge requirements.
One of the solution to this could be by taking advantage of the Anugraha loom developed by the CCRI as the technique will come handy for development of production infrastructure for manufacturing it.
With the initiatives of the Coir Board, coir sector today is a supplier of geotextiles. The Board is a statutory body established by the government under a legislation enacted by the Parliament namely, Coir Industry Act 1953, for the promotion and development of coir industry in India.
To promote this segment, the Board has also established a testing laboratory for coir geotextiles at the Central Coir Research Institute, Kalavoor.
Geotextiles made out of coir are ideally suited for low-cost applications because coir is available in abundance. Therefore, there is enough scope to enhance the application. Coir fibers resemble the wood fibres in terms of physical properties and chemical composition.
The geotextiles and its related products have many applications and currently support many civil engineering applications including roads, airfields, railroads, embankments, retaining structures, reservoirs, canals, dams, bank protection, coastal engineering and construction site silt fences.
Usually geotextiles are placed at the tension surface to strengthen the soil. It is also used for sand dune armoring to protect upland coastal property from storm surge, wave action and flooding.
Besides, it promotes new vegetation by absorbing water and preventing top soil from drying out. The golden fibre is a 100 per cent organic naturally occurring fiber from a renewable source obtained from coconut husk.
The advantage of the coir is that it is not only hard but strongest among all natural fibers, which can be spun and woven into different types of mattings.
Alleppey (Alappuzha) is the nerve centre of Kerala’s famous coir industry where one can see coconut husks being beaten into fibre for making beautiful mats and other coir products.
Both men and women are actively involved in the production of coir in Kerala. The women are mainly involved in the yarn spinning sector and the men in the product-weaving sector. Coir Industry enjoys the status as the largest Cottage Industry in Kerala, giving employment to over a million people.
Indian coir industry has been fortunate to get a boost in the form of the ever increasing awareness about eco-protection. The eco-friendly quality of coir will help it to hold its ground even as it battles competition from synthetic fibres in today’s developing world.
The coir Industry in India has a strong position in the export orientation since several decades.
However, the pattern of exports and its product mix has changed drastically. With more emphasis on value-added products, the coir sector witnessed a significant change in the total volume and value of exports.
At present, coir and its products from India are exported to more than 80 countries and the US is the single largest market with a share of more than 40% in the total export. European countries together share more than 41 % of the exports.
However, the sector has been confronted with a number of problems such as lack of access to timely and affordable credit, absence of innovative channels of financing, low-level of technology adoption, poor brand building and marketing, low-level of innovation and low penetration of ICT to name a few.
During the 12th Five-Year Plan, the coir sector has a vision of acquiring new dimensions by way of following broad interventions : –
Creation of husk collection banks is essential, to ensure optimum utilisation of raw-material. Once it is set up, the present utilisation level of coconut husks at 40% could be enhanced to 60%.
Modernising the traditional processes of spinning and weaving by eliminating drudgery and facilitate women to operate the machines.
Enhancement of the present insurance scheme for providing compensation for accidental death and partial/permanent disabilities along with introducing a new scheme for health cover to coir workers to be undertaken.
The technologies/machinery items developed by the research institutes to be demonstrated and transferred to the grassroots level of the coir industry through appropriate extension work.
Technological interventions to be made through appropriate schemes for upgradation of quality of coir and its products. Certification of Eco-Mark to be obtained for coir and its products, besides promoting it widely in the international market.
Coir Mark Scheme to be strengthened by extending the coverage of the scheme to the entire range of coir products consigned to the domestic market. (PIB Features.)

Satyabhama murder case has been solved by arresting the alleged killers. The breakthrough achieved in identifying the killers and subsequent arrests have put a feather on the cap of Manipur police. But questions will continue to come up until the final verdict is sounded by the law court. It is true police acted very fast. Without knowing any clue the state police started the task of investigation and performed wonderfully arresting all those involved in the crime. This question can be asked whether one of the three involved in the crime agreed to act as approver of the crime. It will be interesting to know where from Biju and Jivan picked up? Were they picked up from home or from street? Did the duo hide at the same place? What role did Jivan play in the whole drama leading up to the killing and abandonment of the body at the secluded place? Can a lifeless body be curled up and placed in the small space available between wind shield and driver’s seat, which is used as foot rest? Disclosure of the details of the incident, blow by blow, all that happened will be of help in taking precaution by all those, who are vulnerable to such kind of attack. Not only newspapers even the UG elements have also declared to begin investigation into the whole
episode. But the mob justice carried out at the houses of the trio involved in the crime is unacceptable. The helpless houses faced the ogre of the angry mob. The scene of the destruction of the houses is as heartbreaking as the killing of the innocent persons. A house provides shades and shelters to all. Not all in the respective families, who have been
receiving protection from the demolished houses, can be assumed as pitiless souls. They might not be instigating their son or brother to commit crime against woman. Just as we show love and sympathy to someone who needs it let us also learn to show love and compassion to others, who need it. We are different from those living in jungle where might is right. Satyabhama killing is really unfortunate. Similar incident had happened in other parts of the country but no such follow up violent mob as the one happening in Manipur is to be seen. The situation now calls for all to remain alert to avoid occurrence of such type of crime against woman in future. Young man and woman should take parental guidance. No parent will like their young children to land in trouble. We have seen these days young boys in defiance of the wishes of their parents doing things that are really eye sore. Everyone has a role to play in avoiding crime against woman. The person of dubious character should be avoided. Remain alert and kick out the persons, who are in the habit of doing abnormal things.
