IMPHAL, November 19: Supporters of the BJP candidate for Thangmeiband constituency took out a rally this morning showing their strength ahead of the November 21 bye election.

The rally was participated by various communities residing in the constituency including Meiteis, Kabuis, Koirengs and others showing support to BJP candidate Khumukcham Joykishan.

The supporters wearing BJP caps and flags reached out to every nook and corner of the constituency shouting slogans endorsing the BJP and party candidate Joykishan.

The rally ended at the residence of the candidate.

Speaking to media persons in connection to the rally, Joykishan said the bye election is the opportunity to teach a lesson to the Congress party.

Charging the Congress government of distributing huge amount of money to buy the voters, he said the Congress government is using the funds meant for development to buy votes.

The use of money and muscle power to win elections cannot be applicable in Thangmeiband, he said adding that the people of Thangmeiband have awakened.

He further expressed full confidence to the people of Thangmeiband that they will help him succeed as the people are fed up of the prolonged corruption in the State.

On November 24 when the election results will be out, the rule of the Congress will be hit hard, he said indicating to a easy BJP win.

The results of the bye-election will show the people’s resistance against the Congress, he claimed.

He further claimed that the Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh and the deputy Chief Minister Gaikhangam have left their offices and are involved in campaigning for the Congress candidates.

This is a clear image of the Congress being afraid of the BJP candidates, he claimed.

The Congress is afraid that if the BJP candidates win the two seats of Thongju and Thangmeiband constituencies, the two BJP MLAs will rock the State Assembly and flash all the corruption, malpractices, misuse of funds meant for the State during the last 13 years, he claimed.

He further said that it is impossible for the Congress to win the seats especially from Thangmeiband.

The rally was also participated by Meinam Bhorot, BJP Manipur president Th Chaoba, MP Lok Sabha and in charge Manipur BJP Prahlad Singh Patel among other leaders.

CHURACHANDPUR, November 19: The Lions Club of Churachandpur Greater led by its president Langkjanpau Guite, general secretary James Doungel, treasurer Gouzamang, members like Ricky Lalawm Guite, principal of Ccpur Govt College Lalhosan, vice chairman ADCC and others condoled the nine ‘tribal martyrs’ at the JPO information center today.

Speaking on the occasion, the treasurer said people has chastened us “Toothless lion” but we all have occupations to attend to and due to the present prevailing in Churachandpur, we are unable to act as we wish.

He said we really share the grief of the ‘heroes.’

The president of the club also spoke on the occasion and expressed the club’s and his individual support and appreciation to the JPO who had stood firm this far and remain a main pillar for sustaining the tribal unity movement.

The vice chairman of ADCC handed over the club’s contribution Rs 10000 to the JPO.

Meanwhile, preparation for the burial of the nine tribal martyrs at ADC Complex is underway with a JCB being employed to flatten the proposed burial site tentatively set for November 30, though some are not sure if the ADC complex is the best site for burial.

Burying the nine martyrs has been a hot topic of debate in recent times as some on conditions of anonymity have shown reservation citing that burying of the nine without receiving any concrete promise from the government will not be a solution but may undermine and derail the cause of recent protest.

Sources also said that the JAC formed against ‘anti tribal bills’ are also constantly coordinating with the MTFD, who are protesting in the national capital and are reportedly positively progressing to get more attention of the government.

Slow pace of road repairing work irks Chandel civil organisations

CHANDEL, November 19: The district’s Naga civil bodies have expressed discontentment over the slow pace of the ongoing repairing work of the 18km long stretch of the District Headquarters road

CHANDEL, November 19: The district’s Naga civil bodies have expressed discontentment over the slow pace of the ongoing repairing work of the 18km long stretch of the District Headquarters road from Pallel and urged the concerned authority to complete the repairing of the road at the earliest.

Since the repairing work of the road was taken up since early part of the current year, only a few kilometers from Pallel area, Komlathabi (Kapaam)area and district headquarters area were black topped and the other portions of the road were left untouched even though stone chips were laid.

The commuters who travel along the road endure hardship and it almost took nearly an hour to reach the district headquarters from Pallel after bumping rides through numerous pot holes and a cloud of dust. And there is also a report of frequent traffic accidents along the district headquarter road due to the deplorable road condition.

Speaking to the media persons, Ws. Kanral Anal, President of Chandel Naga People’s Organisation (CNPO) told that the repairing work of the road has been closely monitored by a Development & Monitoring Cell of the organization. And it was found that the repairing work of the only 18 kms stretch road was not complete till day and the repairing was indeed very slow.

On behalf of the people of Chandel, the President of the organization urged the concern contractors to expedite the repairing work and complete the road at the earliest possible.

Lh. Bliss Anal, President of Naga Women Union Chandel (NWUC) and SR. Joyningam, President of Naga Students’ Union Chandel (NSUC) also expressed dissatisfaction over the ongoing repairing work of the road and pointed out that quality was not maintained in the ongoing repairing work of Chandel to Pallel road.

While appealing the concern authority to maintain quality and complete the repairing work in time, the President of the two Union also warned that the Union will taken up necessary measures if the concern authority fails to heed our grievances.

It may be mentioned that prior to sanctioning the amount for repairing of the road by the Government, the people of Chandel raised hues and cries in the forms of Bandh, Sit in protest, Mass Rally for repairing the road stretch. Even, the road was once repaired by the general public, civil organization and like-minded public leaders on their own capacities.

Hope is the Key

Poverty can be extremely depressing. It can dehumanize, depriving self-esteem as well as human dignity from those caught in its trap. If not for the support of the joint family

Poverty can be extremely depressing. It can dehumanize, depriving self-esteem as well as human dignity from those caught in its trap. If not for the support of the joint family institution, still very much a tradition in the Manipur, the number of absolutely poor, with absolutely no income source at all, would have become visible in very many ways. Seven lakh and more unemployed youth, (as is what the registers in the state’s employment exchange shows), out of a population of 28 lakhs, would have been simply socially explosive and devastating if not for this generously elastic shock absorber. Indirectly, we may already be witnessing the strain on the society in the rise of delinquency, drugs abuse, petty street crimes and even organized extortion gangs although there probably are other factors as well for these deviant behavioural shifts. More often than not, it is the poor who are more generous and humane than the rich. Only when hopes for a redemptive mechanism become lost, or when the conditions for poverty begins to be seen as a result of unjust administration, or when the disparity between the rich and poor become unfairly stark, attitudes begin to harden for the worse. No wonder than that most religions eulogize the state of material poverty, for it is assumed poverty in the external world is an indicator of the richness of one’s soul. No other religion says this more explicitly than Christianity, when Christ in what is today considered one of the greatest and most poetic passages in the Bible, tells his disciples during the Beatitude (in the Sermon on the Mount), that blessed are the poor for they will inherit the kingdom of heaven. Gautam Buddha too renounced the material world and through his self-embraced poverty, attained enlightenment. There are so many other messiahs, from all regions of the world, who followed this same path.

But the poverty that religion envisioned is more a metaphor of a spirituality to which material conditions make little difference. It probably referred to a life free of avarice and greed, and all other transgressions into human understanding of ethical behaviours, which are generally associated with the way to material wealth. This poverty cannot however be the same, agonizing, life-sapping impoverishment that the modern world knows and sees on its urban streets. For this is a poverty that crushes not just the physical world of those it burdens but also their spiritual landscape with its sheer weight, and more importantly, hopelessness. It is more a curse than a blessing. And this is the kind of poverty that is taking shape in our society today. We cannot see a bigger challenge before any government, our state government in particular, than to arrest the slow but sure onslaught of this poverty.

There cannot be any miracle solution to remove the factors in an economy that leads to impoverishment of a population. It will have to be by a multi-pronged, long term, well thought out strategy that the problem is tackled. It cannot also be the government alone that is given the responsibility to fight this battle. The people and the government will have to make this a common battlefront. However, for the people to feel empowered to join the battle, the government’s initiatives are vital. Poverty is terrible, but it would not have been so terrible if hope remained alive that given the will, this condition can be overcome, if not in one generation, then in the next. The way many Eastern and South East Asian countries, including South Korea, Thailand, Cambodia, Laos and many more came out of the poverty trap much worse than our own should be an example as well as inspiration for us. That is to say that parents living below the poverty line must still be given the confidence that they have the means to equip their children to compete legitimately for the best life the system can offer, dependent solely on their individual diligence, industry and aptitude. The most important thing that the government can and must do, is for it to lift the standard and discipline of its moribund education system. The elixir to re-instill hope even in the poorest is the sense that they can still empower their children with the appropriate knowledge and skills demanded by the modern world regardless of their poverty. Let the government education system work and even if miracles do not drop from heaven, they can be manufactured here on earth.
