“As arts and beauty go together, a home without art cannot be the abode of beauty. Without beauty there cannot be truth and without truth there cannot be peace. A home becomes a house.”
The present article attempts to look into the traditional handcrafts of the Zeliangrong of North East and their cultural significance. The word craft denotes skill, art, trade etc. Crafts are all the techniques of skilled handwork used to produce tools, weapons and artifacts. Handicrafts also called handcraft or crafts have referred to a particular skill or art of making objects by hand. Let us switch on the living mode

When you board an aircraft, you switch on the airplane mode in your phone. Just like that, in life, too, make an essential switch from survival mode to living mode. The survival mode is full of questions: what will happen to me in the future, where will i live? How will i fit into society and that too “successfully”?

Why is it all so big?

When knowledge is imperfect, vision funnelled through a tunnel, and grander possibilities exist only in the realm of philosophy or religion, any scientific change can come as a deluge drowning out the belief systems of an already abiding humanity. That’s exactly what happened in the western world when Copernicus whisked away a notional rug from under our feet that had long meant we — meaning our world in all its astronomical definitions and other senses — were the centre of the universe, read, creation. Suddenly all the observable heavenly bodies in the firmament were no longer seen to be orbiting the Earth as their magisterial focus; rather a heliocentric alternative was offered with empirical evidence which proclaimed that the Sun instead held the planets in its gravitational thrall. Geocentrism was dead forever. Soon tiny Earth would also be dwarfed by other gassy giant planets in its own backyard.

Guide your kids with ‘responsibilities’ not ‘restrictions’

Parents keep forgetting that giving birth is not creation of a life but being a passage for welcoming a life. They tend to forget that with their years getting rolled, their young one are too, flipping their calendar. Elders keep thinking that saying ‘NO’ to all the calls of their young one will guide them to the Pandora of success but it never turns true. Breaking it down; parents keep thinking that ‘Restrictions’ is the best way to guide a child. But they never realize that ‘Responsibilities’ is the only truth.

The State of Manipur with a households of 5,07,152 according to 2011 Census if presume to possess a rupee coin per household then a total of 5,07,152 coins would be lying idle instead of circulating in the markets. There will be many more stashed away in piggy banks, drawers, bags, on the table or under the mattress. When this unaware collection of coins continues in our homes, the transaction of the rupee coins in the market shrinks. Then we end up getting some toffee, soap, a chocolate or match box instead for the change of Rs.5 from the shop. Same is true for the case of the Rs.1 and Rs.2 denomination coins.

The Framework Agreement – A ticking time bomb?

It’s true. Manipur, the small daughter state of India has been decapitated bit by bit, just like an animal in a slaughterhouse. Firstly, the first Prime Minister of India Pt Jawaharlal Nehru gave away the naturally resourceful Kabaw Valley to Burma including the Ningthi Turel, a bountiful river in terms of precious elements such as gold, other metals and varieties of precious stones as a way of negotiating a truce of peaceful-co-existence as a neighbouring country with Indian Union as well as flaunting that India has embraced democracy since its independence from British Colonial Rule. Like an on and off affair or an illegitimate relationship, the valley remained a bone of contention between Manipur and Burma. As per historical facts Kabaw valley, no doubt was a part of Manipur during the 18th century when Manipur was a princely state.

He who gave birth to rock n’ roll

Little or nothing did my generation know about Chuck Berry when we used to rock n’ roll during our high school days in Bishenpur, because he was not as fair and handsome as Elvis Presley. That was the time then when amateur teen rock music enthusiasts in my age group around my hometown rather went for attribute of fair and handsomeness than any intrinsic musical value of a rocker. A pimpled classmate of mine in Bishenpur was named Elvis by his parents, after the rock’s first pop star.

The Manipur opportunity: With BJP in power in three NE States, a chance to solve the Naga problem

Manipur’s new BJP government should bring attention back to the Naga conflict which, despite simmering for six decades, remains remote in our national consciousness. The current deadlock in the Naga problem could make the PM’s Act East Policy a virtual non-starter. The transit via the North East could be India’s answer to the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor. Meaningful co-operation through the Bangladesh Bhutan Nepal Initiative and the Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation — and extending such cooperation to the ASEAN — can be an antidote to Pakistan’s obstructionist tactics in the SAARC. It will also deny the Chinese and the ISI opportunities to fish in the North East’s troubled waters.
