IMPHAL, January 23: Deputy CM Gaikhangam and numerous important civil dignitaries at Loktak Brigade interacted with mentor and Director, Institute of Peace and Conflict Studies (IPCS), New Delhi, Maj Gen (Retd) Dipankar Banerjee, who is on a visit in Manipur.

Dy CM and Maj Gen (Retd) Banerjee discussed various issues affecting the peace and harmony in the North East region and Manipur in particular. Dy CM spoke about the urgent need to improve road and rail communication connecting North East internally as well as with neighbouring countries.

He further mentioned that it would bring immense economic benefits to the population and act as a catalyst for overall development of the region. Gen Banerjee commented on the relevance of India’s North East Policy and significance of Asian Highway (AH-1) Project. He also elucidated as to how it would help the North East region in terms of border trade and economic integration with South East Asian Countries.

Presently, Maj Gen (Retd) Dipankar Banerjee is the mentor and Director of the Institute of Peace and Conflict Studies, New Delhi since October 2003, a leading independent and autonomous think tank on conflict and security issues. He is a member of the Board of Governors, Global Coalition against Terrorism, Washington DC, USA. Also he is a renowned writer having written, edited large number of books and publications.

IMPHAL, January 23: Unidentified persons suspected to be underground elements lobbed a Chinese-made hand grenade at the Kwakeithel Makha Thokchom Leikai residence of Dr L Sachindra today. The bomb was found by a sweeper at the courtyard at around 5.30 am today.

The grenade failed to explode. Police bomb squad retrieved the grenade safely and a case in this has been regard. Members of Kwaikeithel Makha Thokchom Leikai Women Welfare Association and locals of the area decried the grenade attack at the residence of the doctor and held a sit-in-protest. L Sachindra is an ophthalmologist at Shija Hospital.

KANGPOKPI, January 23: A mini-truck driver and a labourer who were abducted on January 17 near Kanglatongbi temple has been rescued today from Koubru Leikha area.

A high level reliable source informed that the duo were rescued by a combined team of Imphal West Cdo, 43 Assam Rifles, Senapati Police and CSOs from Sadar Hills including Kuki Inpi, Women Union and Women Human Rights from a hillock in the eastern side of Bimparao village, situated one and half Kilometre (approx.) from Koubru Leikha at around 3:30 pm this evening.

The two are identified as Maibam Tomba Singh, 29, son of Maibam Mangi Singh of Thoubal Athokpam Nepra Company and Thongam Shanta Singh, 45, son of Th Moirang of Athokpam Awang Leikai.

The source further said that Maibam Tomba Singh, a mini-truck driver and Thongam Shanta Singh, a labourer were engaged in black topping a road at Kanglatongbi when they were abducted by suspected KNA militant near Kanglatongbi temple on January 17 at around 9 pm in connection with a ransom demand.

IMPHAL, January 23: A Hyundai Accent make car bearing registration number WB02P-7266 smashed into a Maruti Dezire make car bearing number MNO1W-3741 near the traffic island of the Governor’s residence today around 8.30 pm.

The four occupants were driving under the influence of alcohol.

The car was driving on the wrong side of the road, when the police cdos flagged them to stop.

However, in trying to flee from the police, it smashed into the Maruti Dezire which belongs to Y Thamkishore Singh, commissioner of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution.

Police have arrested all four occupants of the car.

IMPHAL, January 23: In the context of bringing the role of RSS Manipur in relation to News items appeared in the national daily, ‘the Time of India’, Guwahati Edition on Sunday, December 8, 2013, in denial of repealing of AFSPA in Manipur by quoting a statement of Arunkumar, RSS Pracharak, as stated at Silchar, RSS Manipur had clarified the denial of news item in Poknapham and Peoples Chronicle on December 18 and 23, 2013 respectively while recognizing and appreciating the movement to repeal AFSPA from Manipur.

Conveying it in a press release, it is further said that RSS stands for repealing of AFSPA in Manipur and added on January 6, 2014, Arunkumar sent a clarification of denial of allegation appeared in the said newspaper stated herein was out rightly deny it.

For public information, the exact language is quoted “The news appeared in Times of India, dated December 8, 2013 in my name about RSS being against repealing AFSPA in Manipur is untrue and I out rightly deny it. What I said in Silchar was only about Jammu & Kashmir State and no mention of Manipur was made by me. We are of the opinion that Government may repeal AFSPA from Manipur”.
