Imphal, Jan 20 : The first phase of pulse polio programme was conducted today throughout the state. Polio Vaccine was administered to children between 0-5 years .
Polio booths were opened in schools, clubs and various other locations. The programme conducted by Family Welfare department will continue till February 21 .
India launched the Pulse Polio Immunization (PPI) program in 1995 as a result of World Health Organization’s (WHO) Global Polio Eradication Initiative. Under this programme, all children under 5 years are given 2 doses of Oral Polio Vaccine (OPV) in December and January every year until polio is eradicated.
PPI was initiated with the objective of achieving hundred percent coverage under OPV. It aims to reach the unreached children through improved social mobilization, plan mop-up operations in areas where poliovirus has almost disappeared and maintain high level of morale among the public.The theme “Towards a polio free world” .
Altogether 3609 booths were opened and 722 supervisors took part in the programme.
The main function was inaugurated by Ram Muivah, principal secy. Health and family welfare.
House to house campaign will also be conducted to ensure that no children is left out.
Sectors and Units under HQ IGAR(South) in association with health department organized Pulse Polio immunization programme on 20 Jan 13 at their respective locations.
40 Assam Rifles of 9 Sector administered Oral Polio drops and immunized against Polio to 1650 of children under the age of 5 years at Keithelmanbi, Singjamei, canchipur, Lilong and Andro.
44 Assam Rifles of 10 Sector conducted pulse polio immunization camp at Kamjong and Chassad villages of Kamjong sub division. Ukhrul district. The event received an overwhelming response with more than 100 children getting immunized.
27 Assam Rifles of 28 Sector organized a Pulse Polio Immunization programme on 20 Jan 2013 at Kakching and all the posts of the unit. A total of 384 children were immunized during the Camp secured them from the incapacitating Polio Mellitus.
Security Forces under the aegis of Red Shield Division conducted an Intensive Pulse Polio Immunization Camp at . Wide publicity was given to facilitate the awareness of Polio to all the villages around Noney through announcements for the last 3 days. A total of 94 children below the age of 5 yrs were given vaccines during the Immunization camp.
Rotary International , the largest private sector donor, which is spearheading Global Polio Eradication initiative organised the administration of polio drops to children below five years of age.
Till date, Rotary’s contributed worldwide is US $ 850 million (Rs. 4,250 crores) for eradication of Global polio.
