SHILLONG, Feb 13 NNN: To ensure victory to its party, top brass Congress leaders including Prime Minister of India, Dr Manmohan Singh, president, Sonia Gandhi and her son, Rahul Gandhi will be visiting Meghalaya for ‘massive-campaigning’ across the state for the February 23, Meghalaya Assembly elections, officials today said.
“Prime Minister of India, Dr Manmohan Singh will be addressing a massive public meeting in Shillong on February 15,” AICC general secretary, Mukul Wasnik told reporters at a news conference held here on Wednesday.
AICC president, Sonia Gandhi and Congress vice president, Rahul Gandhi will also be addressing public meetings in different parts of the state, he informed.
Stating that the campaign of the Indian National Congress is going on full swing, Wasnik said Home Minister of India, Sushil Kumar, AICC general secretary Oscar Fernandes and others have already visited the state for campaigning in the next few days.
VIPs including Defence Minister of India, AK Anthony and Minister of State for Defence, Jitendra Singh are also expected to come to address public meetings of the Congress.
We are still working out the programmes for the Finance minister of India, P Chidambaram and AICC secretary, Dr Shakhil Ahmed, he added.
Highlighting the party’s strategies, Wasnik said, “The Pradesh Congress Committee is undertaking an exercise that the entire state some leaders visiting some parts while the other visiting other parts in this manner the entire state we will be covering and communicating to the people of Meghalaya our views on this very important Assembly election in the state.”
On being asked about bringing star campaigners to the State, the AICC general secretary said, “The Election commission also does expect that we should give a list of our campaigners not exceeding 40,” adding “Elections in Meghalaya are extremely important, it is an extremely important area of our nation.”
He however added, “The prosperity and development in Meghalaya is of vital important to us as a nation. It is also important to us as a political party and therefore we are getting all our important leaders to come n give their views on the upcoming polls.”
Informing that so far the party has visited West Khasi Hills and Ri Bhoi district, Wasnik said, “The type of respond which we are witnessing from these places, we are confident that INC will be able to get a clear majority in the upcoming elections.”
On being asked, whom the party has projected as its chief ministerial candidate, Wasnik however said, “The matter would be decided only after the Congress form the government in the state.”
The Congress is scheduled to visit Jaintia Hills tomorrow.
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) today predicted of a ‘hung-assembly’ in Meghalaya contradicting the claims of the ruling Congress and its ally in the government that they will emerge as the ‘single’ largest parties to form the next government on their own in the state.
