DIMAPUR, Jan 20 NNN: Extended Christmas vacation of NSCN-IM chairman Isal Chisi Swu and the outfit’s general secretary Thuingaleng Muivah seems to be winding up in Nagaland.
Chairman Isak Chisi Swu is reportedly leaving Nagaland on January 22 while Thuingaleng Muivah may follow suit. However, the exact date when Th Muivah is leaving Nagaland is not certain.
“Our general secretary is likely to leave by the end of this month,” a senior NSCN-IM leader disclosed .
Meanwhile, it is speculated whether there could be new development in New Delhi with regard to the talks.
The two NSCN-IM leaders were to leave Dimapur on January 12 but since the ‘home-works’ got piling they had postpone their programme. Reports said actually Isak Swu and Muivah were waiting for a call from New Delhi.
A different source however said Isak Chisi Swu’s plan to leave Nagaland on January 22 for New Delhi is prompted by a ‘personnel assignment’. But still a well placed source put it otherwise.
Whatever may be the case, there have been serious speculations that a ‘fresh news’ in connection with the Indo-Naga peace process is likely soon. However, top NSCN-IM leaders continue to remain tight-lipped on the matter.

Imphal, Jan 20 : A one day public discussion on the deprivation of poor people’s rights organized by All Manpipur democratic women’s front was held today at Manipur Press Club, Major Khul. A Mobi president AMWJU, M. Ambrapati Leima secy. AMDWF and N. Binoy president senior citizens for society graced the occasion as chief guest, president and guest of honour.
Haridas president All Manipur transport association, Budha Luwang advisor All Manipur inter state bus service association, M. Paikhomba advocate, Radhesana All Manipur Ima Keithel semgat lup, Th. Basanta president All Manipur rickshaw drivers and pullers association also spoke .
: “The PDS items meant for the poor people are now the commodities of MLAs, underground organisations and some rich and influential people,” said A Mobi,
president of All Manipur Working Journalists Union (AMWJU).
A Mobi said that it is a common knowledge that the Public Distribution System (PDS) is not functioning well in Manipur. “But no one dares to come out in the open to speak about it
because during election times the politicians had spent huge amount of money to buy the voters,” said A Mobi. He also said that it is very hard to distinguish between the rich and
the poor in Manipur. “Any one can spend Rs 3000 for a housie ticket. Any family can dole out huge amount of money during festivities. But this does not mean that we are rich.
Somewhere down the line, our living style and system is in a mess,” said the AMWJU president. He said this is so due to bad work culture. Mobi also stated that in the past there
was a problem of exporting goods. “But these days, the concern has been that of importing goods,” he added. He then asked the people to retrospect themselves.
Senior Citizen for Society president N Binoy blamed the Central government for the mess in Manipur. “After more than 60 years of Independence, majority of the people are living in
a poor condition. This is a shameful thing for India,” N Binoy said. He blamed the system in the country. Binoy said though huge amount of money was doled out for the poor people, it never reaches the target.
N Binoy then urged the media to play a major role to rectify the ailing system.
Meanwhile, four resolutions were taken at the end of the programme. It was resolved that a ‘unified people’s struggle committee’ be set up. The second resolution has been to set up an advisory board in this connection. The third one is that if the PDS items do not reach the target by January 30, a series of protest be initiated from February 1.

Naga betrayed by centre : NPO

SENAPATI, Jan 20 NNN: Reacting to the reported comment of Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh after the meeting with political parties at New Delhi on January 17, the Naga People’s Organization (NPO) has termed it as “dismayed and irresponsible” from the part of a responsible Centre leadership.
The NPO said it is compelled to express that, “the vindictive and communal designs” of Manipur State Government have blinded the wisdom of the Indian leadership, for which the Nagas in Senapati district feel betrayed by such reaction of the Prime Minister.
“On the pretext of addressing the molestation of Momoko case, the political parties in Manipur has invested all efforts to sabotage even the on-going Naga peace process. Such indifferent anti-Naga attitude of the political groups led by the present Ibobi led Secular Progressive Front (SPF) government is condemned and unacceptable.
The Nagas of the district while affirming its stance to support and protect the ongoing peaceful and honorable solutions will extend all out resources and collective efforts to usher in permanent peace in the State and the region.
Fully aware of the final phase of the Naga peace process and upcoming Nagaland Assembly election in February, the unwanted reaction and provocative nature of the Indian government through its agencies to arrest and issue summons of NSCN leaders is disturbing.
The NPO is in favour of solution first rather than election,” the apex Naga frontal organisation of Senapati district demanded.
The NPO added that, the Prime Minister in the past has expressed his determination to resolve the 60years old Naga issue by assuring his willingness to walk extra mile for bringing an end to the peace process, however the latest statement comes as a “shocking to the Nagas. “We expect unceasing sincerity and commitment of the Indian Government to bring an end to one of the longest and delayed settlement” said the NPO statement.
Hitting out at Manipur based organizations and political parties, the NPO stated that, opposing every peaceful and democratic move of the Nagas to resolve any issue will only widen the gap between the hills and valley populations.
“Backed by the state Government civil bodies has become the foot soldiers to counter the genuine aspirations of the Nagas and the tribals in Manipur .With media fraternity controlled and influenced under the banner of the State government and organizations thus placing a one-sided treatment to the present situation, the voices of the hill districts remained neglected and unheard,” the NPO alleged.
“Moreover, the United Naga Council (UNC) alleging the present state government as communal is vivid and visible from the one-sided treatment of the present issue and its approach to the Centre government while addressing the tribal issues of Manipur.
The destructive and repressive agenda of the state government towards the Nagas have become intolerable and beyond limitations.
Therefore, it is best advised that, the Nagas are allowed to resolve its issue by themselves through peaceful means rather than raising possibilities of achieving the solution with violence,” the NPO stated.

Political parties must have young leaders

Congress has felt the need for grooming up young leaders. The trend sweeping across the world is projection of young leaders, who can rule their respective countries for not less than 20 years. When Tony Blair became Prime Minister of Britain he was considered Prime Minister for 16 years. But the circumstances changed his tenure as he began playing subsidiary role to the US Government and he could not fulfil the expected dream of the Britishers. Britishers know unless there is stability the pace of development will slacken. Continuity of a Government for three or four terms is required to get the fruit of development. Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru described as the architect of modern India ruled the country for 12 years. If he ruled the country for five years only none would have remembered him. Because nothing can be done in a single term. India would have reached super power status 15 years back if NDA did not replace Narasimha Rao Government. His economic liberalisation policy was not followed up by the successive Government. When the fruit was about to be reaped his Government was brought down. Congress policy and programme differ from BJP led NDA. Therefore Congress party has in mind when it projected Rahul Gandhi as the next to the hierarchy line of succession that he would be able to serve the country for not less than 30 years. Dr. Manmohon Singh present Prime Minister will be 82 years next year. The situation demands he be replaced to enable him to retire gracefully. The choice naturally falls on Rahul Gandhi. Opposition parties too should learn a lesson from the Congress party. If it thinks of effecting a change of guard at the centre it must project a young leader to take on Rahul and co. But finding young leader is not an easy task. Buddha, Jesus Chris did not appear quite often. Similarly political parties functioning in Manipur also should feel the need for grooming up young leaders. The new entrants to the voters list, all young are worshippers of young and fire brand leaders. They value the voice of young leaders. They consider the voice of the senior leaders as obsolete and out of touch. All political parties must feel the change brought by time. Samajwadi Party had Akhilesh Yadav replacing Mulayam in UP. BSP has Mayawati, who is also a young leader considering her age. Trinamol Congress in West Bengal has also groomed up too many young leaders. Its leader Mamta Bannerjee is also young. It is amazing young men and women cannot be projected as leaders of political parties
in Manipur. Barring N. Sovakiran of MPP who has been appointed as interim President of MPP the others could become President of the non Congress political parties functioning in Manipur only after crossing the age of 60. This trend of waiting for someone to grow old to become a president of a political party needs to be smashed. Senior leaders can work under the young leader. Unless you have the temerity for doing that the possibility of effecting a change will be remote.
