IMPHAL, July 13: Crimes related to alcoholism, drug abuse, mobile phone abuse especially trapping young girls through mobile phones seem seems to be rapidly increasing, said Ng Tejkumar, Director Prosecution during a School Literacy Mission organised by the Manipur State Legal Service Authority and Mingshel, held at Standard Robarth Higher Secondary, Canchipur today.

The students, teaching, non-teaching staff of the school attended the School Literacy Mission.

He elaborated further that mobile phones are being used practically by every member of the society, cutting across religion, caste, gender and income groups which has also affected the abuse of such technology by the wrong people in executing criminal activities.

Any person threatening or harming the prestige of anyone through mobile phones is punishable with upto three years of imprisonment under the Technology Act 2008 which was implemented in 2009 in the state, he said.

He further noted that the problem of drugs has continued to haunt the state despite the various efforts of various organizations for the last many years.

He expressed his concern that the issue of drugs in the state is a hidden propaganda of certain elements to destroy the Manipuri society and if allowed to continue in this manner, than in another 20-25 years, the number of males will greatly diminish while the number of widows will increase manifold in the Manipuri society.

P Landhoni Devi, Principal, Standard Robarth Higher Secondary School appealed further appealed to all concerned who have custody of the two missing students of the school Puyam Johnsana of Khurai Chingangbam Leikai and Mutum Nongpoknganba of Bashikhong Kitana Panung to release the two at the earliest considering the plights of the parents.

Meanwhile, elaborating on the need to organize such awareness programmes, she said it would only encourage the students to know good from wrong.

Today most teenagers are indulging in drugs and misusing mobile phones and other technologies, which have adversely affected their education, she said.
