IMPHAL, November 20: The CCEF celebrated Universal Children’s Day in its centenary Hall at Wangjing on November 20, 2013 as a part of worldwide celebration of children on this Day.

UNICEF (United Nations Children’s Fund) also promotes and coordinates this special day, which also works towards improving children’s welfare.

The main theme of today’s celebration was “Stop violence against children”.

The message was widely accepted by the general public particularly the parents/guardians who attended the celebration.

It was on this day that ‘Declaration of the rights of the children’ was adopted by UN General Assembly in 1959 and later in 1989.

Addressing the function, L Jelshyam Singh, the founder of the CCEF said the role of both parents and teachers are important to create a learning atmosphere for these small children.

He further said that CCEF, one of the premier play group institutions located at the heart of Wangjing town, 28 km away from the capital city along the Indo Myanmar Road is committed to nurturing each child’s spirituality, academic, cultural and personal development.

By celebrating all their achievements, we enable them to recognize a sense of worth in themselves and their full potential, he said.

CCEF believes in emotional integrity and development of individual members in the society, he said.

Parents together with committed volunteers of CCEF can make a difference of our children to achieve and build a meaningful citizen in the state, he continued.

M SucilKumar, secy CDA-C, mentioned the ill-effects of corporal punishment in the schools and other institutes working in the field of children.

The ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India, has recently written to all state governments to abolish the practice of corporal punishment in all educational institutions.

It is noteworthy that they have made a connection between corporal punishment and children dropping-out of school, he said before pointing out that it is an important admission.

The function was presided by L Maimu Singh, ex councillor, Wangjing Lamding Nagar Panchayat; with Soibam Birahai Singh, Associate Professor, YK College as chief guest, Moirangthem Ajit Kumar Singh, Principal, Tenths Model High School and Moirangthem Sucil Kumar Singh, secretary, Centre for Development Activities, Wangjing as guests of Honour.

The major events of the celebration included various performances by the children and giving away of gifts to the children.

Jelshyam Singh extended his heartfelt welcome and thanks to Pazy Cooperacion spain for participating in promotion of this celebration, even though they could not be physically present at the celebration.

PazyCorperacion is one of the International organizations working for peace and development and promoting school children.

They have sent some 50 packets of items (gifts) for the children)

He also extended his thanks to Principal, Tentha Model School for contributing to the celebration through sending 50 nos of exercise books and pencils for the children.

The Manipur Sangai Festival, 2013 will be inaugurated tomorrow afternoon by Paban Singh Ghatowar, Union MoS (in-charge), Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region at Hafta Kangjeibung and BOAT in the presence of a respectable list of dignitaries that include two chief ministers from Myanmar, U Ye Myint of Mandalay Region and U Thar Aye of Sagaing Region; High Commissioner of Mauritius, Dr AK Jagessur and representing the host, Chief Minister of Manipur Okram Ibobi, his deputy Gaikhangam and ministers. Before its culmination on November 30, the ten-day extravaganza will feature cultural items, indigenous games, musical instruments performances by troupes from different communities of Manipur as well as cultural performances by troupes from Sikkim, Assam, Myanmar and Thailand.

For minimization of public discomfort during the festival, the administration must keep an open eye for prevention and prompt rectification of lapses that is bound to surface from time to time due to lack of coordination between the organizers and different government apparatus thus leading to chaotic situation. For instance, one of the first casualties has been the passenger vehicle service, particularly those plying along Sanjenthong. Due to unavailability of specific instructions from the authorities, till late evening today, confused passengers were left stranded at many points as terminus and alternate routes for the autorickshaws service, a major component of intra-city and inter village commutation, have not been identified. At the same, the emphasis put on easy thoroughfare to the main venue Hafta Kangjeibung, has eased the Sanjenthong to Konung Mamang Traffic Island segment as was planned, but has shifted the pressure of vehicular movement to other streets.

The smooth organisation of the festival is a prestige question for each and every one of us. Thus, the government can depend on everyone including the press to be supportive in its suggestions and comments. Whether or not the press agree with any particular decision on the operation of the event by the organisers is irrelevant to its sincere support for the success of the event. Everyone acknowledge the fact that the organisers sit in harm’s way, performing their duties for the state. We thank them for doing so. Correspondingly, the organizers should work to protect the interest of the state and should not ask for personal recognition.

The FIR was registered against ATSUM president, Thangzamuan Tombing at Tamenglong police station on Wednesday.

External Affairs secretary of ATSUM (T), Thangjalun Baite said that ATSUM is fighting for the cause of tribal people which have been deprived by the government since the past many years.

Under the code name ROTO, ATSUM (T) has carried out an agitation in the hills district of the state for the second time as the government has failed to fulfill its demands.

ATSUM has been halting all the national projects in the hills districts of the state since the last few days and the agitation had entered its ninth day, he said.

Citing that the student body has been carrying out its agitation in a democratic manner and not a single violent act has been carried out, he asked why the police have registered an FIR against the president of the student body.

He further demanded a concrete reason from the government on why the FIR was registered.

The government should not test the patience of the students’ body, he said.
