“We are stronger when we are together” – Lien Gangte

Lien Gangte

Dear God,

I know how disappointed you must be when you looked down at your Children in Manipur. I am sorry that we have become so isolated from each other. I am sorry that we have created so much hatred towards each other. I am sorry that we are so focus on our geographical boundaries. I am sorry that we see so many differences among us and forget to celebrate those similarities we share.

May we be committed to be everything You intended us to be when You made us—in will, mind, and emotions; in spirit, soul, and body; in purpose, strength, and character.

May we choose to stand with each other and share a common bond, the desire to walk in right paths, call upon each other in sincerity and truth, and seek to bring unity amongst us. May we work towards building a thriving and sustainable community together.

Give us strength to withstand negative forces ever so predominant and build bridges not fences. May we choose to care for the needs of our neighbour by being there for them, by providing for them and may we do this humbly, gently, lovingly, and prayerfully.

Grant us the knowledge to understand that, we are stronger when we are together.

We have been through a lot lately, but may we learn to trust each other again and create an atmosphere where every community, tribe, family and individuals can thrive and build positive surroundings for us and for our future generation.

To my people of Manipur, it won’t be easy but let us all work harder. We have done it very well for so long now, we all belong to Manipur and we cannot disintegrate. If we looked around us a little more closely, we will see that we are not so different after all. We just have to learn how to cohabit and do it with respect.

By Momon Thoudam

I wonder if Manipuris are harassing Non-Manipuris OR Non-Manipuris are harassing/murdering the National character of Manipuri people. A non-manipuri blog on facebook by name “Helpless non meiteis(in manipur) previously “Helpless Non-Manipuris” have been circulating various communal, anti Manipuri/Anti Meitei propagandas day and night. The facebook pages generate hatred and suspicion among Manipuris and Non-Manipuris and Meitei-tribals. It’s one of the most violent form of communal propaganda against Manipur at large. Jcilps on another hand normally appealed people of Manipur to stage democratic form of agitation for implementation of ILPS in Manipur. Public curfew/public emergency was also declared as per the inactivity and insensitivity shown by the Govt towards the issue of demographic imbalance in the state. The people of state witnessed as how some misled Kukis along with Non-manipuris targeted and looted pro ILPS Meitei groups in Moreh recently. By indulging into economic blockade against Manipur, Non-manipuris have yet again proved beyond any reasonable doubt that they are anti-Manipur and anti-Manipuris. Serious consequences are inevitable due to non- Manipuris communal politics in Manipur and NE at large. Non Manipuris would be solely responsible for any untoward communal clashes in the region. People of Manipur specially Meiteis who are spearheading ILP movement have shown maximum level of self restraint till date. NEPO..the name itself is great insult to the indigenous people of NE??!!! It’s high time NE should unite against immigrants which are becoming rowdy in NE itself, abusing Northeasterners in NE. People of NE should teach these lecherous criminal Non- Manipuris a big lesson, need to remind that its NE and no Delhi where in they would rape, molest kill our people at will…and now Blockade in NE!!!Pro NRC groups of Assam and pro ILPS groups of Manipur should join hand in hand and liberate NE from Non Northeasterners in the greater interests of regional peace and tranquility…Long live Manipur! Long live NE! Down with Mayang hegemony! Save NE from Mayangs!!No to greater Bangladesh! Save indigenous peoples of NE!!

Letter to Editor

Today I arrived from Delhi. I do firmly support ILP however on my way back home some youth blocked my way and started abusing me. The general strike was called all of sudden. So I had to go home but these certain youth used vulgarity.I told them that I am a Manager for SBI and showed them my boarding pass too. However one boy aged around 17 years didn’t consider and treated us very badly. I didn’t respond him. He has no respect for the senior and also if they behave in such a way I don’t think we are heading in the right direction. I felt like smashing him to death but maybe he was high in drugs. If we have to make our demand works these kind of morally torture to public
must stop else there wont be no unity. so my advice to these youth is to behave well and be disciplined so that we become one.

The final bell of a true leadership

By Dr Longjam Robindro

Once again our State Manipur is in a long heated turbulence with continual strikes, hate-speeches in assembly and public spheres, curfews, etc. because of the debate on whether the ILPS should be imposed in Manipur or not.

Now, Certainly the State is in dire need of “a real leader/politician” with vision, that will lead this debate in a constructive and objective manner; A leader that will immediately react to any sign of instability in the state, especially in a state where prejudice, ignorance, anger and hatred seemed to had fed most “debates”; A leader that is more concerned about the well-being of all of the people that constitutes this State, rather than for his personal growth and well-being; A leader that can lead, communicate, express and inspires hope with a vision of a united state; Finally a leader with integrity, maturity of mind, and intellect; A true leader that we are proud to follow.

But at the present scenario, I believe that our current political leadership is totally incapable and inefficient to deal with the real issues of ILPS. Hopefully that kinda leader would positively surface very soon out-of-the-shadows.

3 IDIOTS & 1 STUPID

Thank you all editors so much for that column focusing on “Irregularities in the Selection of College Principals published during the second week of March 2015 in Peoples Chronicle, subsequently later in the Imphal Free Press and finally came out on Kanglaonline on the last week of the month. Whole the month in all news papers it has been discussed in a great detail. That was really thought provoking and heart-robbing! A real discussion that really wakened up each and every individual in our society! Please keep it up. Keep on writing such innovative and informative masterpieces. We really appreciate you sir! That shall, no doubt, be an award winning article! Because, it is so forceful! So fantastic that could ever change the people’s mindset, moved the society and what to say, a guide for the younger generation of the State.

My humble request is please donate this article to me and let me keep it in my small museum established near my small house. The beautiful literature you used may be, of course, your inborn qualities, quite exceptional and worth appreciating!  My vocabulary shall be so poor even to express my deep gratitude to you for your bountiful heart stealing colloquist and superb. My words are not sufficient to make this appreciation!

It is very good that at least people began to study and aware of the Academic Performance Indicator as set out in the UGC Guidelines 2010. But, out of 49 qualified candidates applying for the said 25 posts of principals, Govt. Colleges, only three were produced on your open forum for discussion and their performances were discussed one by one, points by points, looking every nook and corners, giving all relevant data. I really appreciate your style of analyzing candidates leaving behind nothing un-criticized/unturned about them.  But, why were the others not brought into the picture? Had all those 25 posts were occupied by these three nonsense people? Why these three only are considered idiots for unnecessarily working beyond the limits of others and criticized! Why these three idiots are doing at least some academic contributions relevant or not relevant while all their colleagues are sleeping and even snoring heavily day and night after eating, drinking and nothing or everything.

What the hell these idiots are to make the whole system disturbed, chaos and confusion! What the stupid works they do by making everyone hue and cry and even crying teachers openly in the public. What a stupid these idiots are to break the silence of the teaching community in Manipur. What a bloody fools they are for making conflict in the very peaceful atmosphere of the college teachers since the last two decades. What a nonsense they are to annoy and make furious to others including media and others. How dare these nonsense teachers to serve for the society by taking up such nonsense projects on which credits were given unnecessarily by the experts! What a naughty boys these three idiots are to write even at least ABC Alphabetical Books for beginners or even at least rewriting or translating BA BA BLACK SHEEP while other their friends are laughing heartily at them, spitting at their backs. What a fool they are to write at least a poetry or play to give new message to the society while their colleagues are back biting on them. What nonsense they are to contribute such academic contributions to the society as compared to those knowledgeable teachers who never did so. What a bullshit this naha macha to write a play and to receive prize in the All India Level Competitions. This nonsense should always be vanished. His image should be erased forever. How dare he to claim his API more than 1000 scores for the recruitment; why this Oversmart Nahamacha disturbs the whole system?

Thank you hundreds of thousand times for writing this very important and forceful news story, sir. Thanks to the publisher for publishing it in the interest of the general public, thanks to all your crew members for producing it to our society successfully. Thanks all who involved in the publication for this amazing column and wonderful platform for discussion.

But Sir, it will be more interesting and even more wonderful and amazing column of your esteemed newspaper if you kindly collect all documents of those 46 remaining candidates who did not submit any API and suffered the Experts to find at least some documents on which marks may be awarded! That discussion focusing on issues why those 46 remainders who are smarter than the American Sixth Graders and who skillfully escaped from charging, blaming, criticizing, targeting and everything everyday in the esteemed columns, shall again be an award winning story. Please discuss the matter in your esteemed column why and how these intelligent remainders were not selected or wit fully exempted from selection and accordingly exempted from criticism and all sorts of defamations, especially in the media forum of the lawful land.

You may kindly highlight and make us understand elaborately as to why the experts who came down a long distance through luxury flight with huge expenditure went back without recommending candidates at least the exact number of candidates for the 25 seats ! The gentleman nominated by the UGC as the right person to do the needful who Tried – Tried again but at last failed to find at least some papers, even at least a piece of that paper  as documents or likely to be documents on which marks can be awarded anyhow by hook or crook or by dolphin sleep at least to uplift them to the minimum of 400 API points by dipping the whole of his pen into ink and writing in bold and even bolder letters to make all candidates eligible and return happily to his home and told his wife and children the glory of Manipur, the land where Maichous were born, the stories of 7 such maichous and get himself proud of recommending all 49 candidates to see their lucks at the DPC for 25 posts.

Please discuss in details without leaving behind any legs and hands of those also and publish in another day as editorial elaborately focusing on how they were not selected even when there are still 23 remaining posts where they could exercise their freedom of choice, why they feel reluctant to occupy the prestigious positions. That will be very fantastic and more award winning than that of the 17th instant. You may also kindly produce the facts and files why those rejected candidates were still so reluctant to pick up any of the remaining 23 seats and get themselves free from any criticism. You may also kindly include some part on why they remained silent at that time when chances for occupying the 25 posts were open to them and now, why they are making such hue and cry only after three have occupied the three seats and 23 still remained unoccupied. Why they were so reluctant to claim their API at least just up to 401 points anyhow so that they can be awarded 400 points and “1 mark can be omitted” by the Billy Bully experts nominated by the UGC and MPSC. Or, you can insult that mayang macha for pretending to be as considerate by picking up only three with as much relaxation as he could. You may also discuss how difficult would the expert feel in finding at least 25 candidates who are equally or more or less the same as these three idiots? Let them be blamed, let that pangan macha be more blamed ; let him be even more targeted ; more spoken against; more beaten up to one’s content; more threaten up for claiming his API beyond the limits of others.

What a corrupted Government who could not look after all candidates equally by rejecting all or by selecting all in the API. How corrupted the Minister is for unnecessarily requesting the UGC New Delhi to nominate one such expert who cannot even select candidates for all 25 seats or null. Why this Commissioner is so corrupted in corruption by corrupting only three from corruptible twentyfive positions. He must be removed as he is not so expert in corruption. He must be so idiot who corrupts all files of corruption. The corrupter of corruption must be vanished from the soil of Manipur. He who tries to root out the system of corruption must be rooted out. He just missed the chance of corruption from everyone by bringing only three idiots including that pangan macha who is seen everywhere – in the film, in the Art & Culture, in the Archaeometry, in the Television, in the Radio, in the newspapers, in the religious occasions, in the social issues, in the Quiz Competitions, in the Minority issues, in the Majority issues, in everywhere. He must be vanished.

What irregularities the expert made in giving marks to that pangan macha for carrying out a Government Policy Making Document Project while he awarded zeroes to those who did not do or even know about such projects. How irregularities he made in awarding marks to this pangan macha for communicating through e-mail one project under HMS, UK at this post – postal era, while no mark to those candidates who never ever claimed for such projects communicated even through handwritten letters. How irregularities he made by awarding 10 marks to two documents which were marked “can be omitted” and accordingly deducted the same marks from the total while he could not do so for those candidates who did not claim any such documents for which marks can be omitted and deducted from total.

What irregularities he made by omitting marks only but not the documents? Did he have rights to omit document claimed by the candidate rather than omitting marks for that? What irregularities he made while awarding marks to one Project which was initially under the MHRD and now transferred to the UGC whose outcome becomes a policy document for the Government. What irregularities he made in marking for a project benefitted to the State Archaeology Department on the basis of the certificate issued by the Joint Director of Art & Culture who at that time was the Superintendent of Archaeology. How dare him to make irregularities in the Guidelines framed by him. How fool is he to make fool of himself! How stupid the UGC to nominate that nonsense fellow rather than nominating by picking up any one of the so many teachers in Manipur, so many media persons, so many editors who are all well expert not in the field but above the field and far above the UGC and even far above the UGCs in the whole World. How dare that UGC nominated boy to assess API for candidates belonging to this land of Jewels the land in the world where no one is appreciated rather than selves, where those who never involved in academic contributions can speak as bold as frogs while criticizing those who really contributed and keeps on contributing, where those who could not claim(I mean not cross) API not even up to half of the minimum(200) points can shamelessly cry openly against those who have already crossed the minimum(400) points even after omitting many marks for those documents where the expert marked as “can be omitted”, where the people can be easily compelled by the moneylenders, blackmailers, black marketers,  etc  while the real intellectuals are the silent spectators. After all, those experts who faced unnecessarily so many difficulties, who did so many irregularities just to find out at least 25 idiots to save the prestige of Manipur should be beaten up. These three idiots who claimed API more than 400 and hence, selected and that one stupid from UGC should never be spared and should very necessarily be eaten up and finished up. Nonsense! how dared to pick up these three idiots among other useful candidates rather than rejecting all so that everyone would have been kept silent and happily live with their wives and sons and daughters out of the handsome salaries drawn every month peacefully at the promise of fulfilling the UGC conditions 2010.

Kindly publish the column in the public interest as your esteemed daily is the people’s chronicle- the mirror of the society. At the last part of your discussion you may kindly include at least one line indicating that API is mandatory for implementing the UGC scales and enhancement of age of superannuation. And, one more thing to remind you is that the College teachers are paid much higher than us and also they retire at the age of 65 years while other employees do not do so.

Once again! Please don’t forget to make that column see the light of the day! Please don’t forget to publish my letter also under the title – 3 IDIOTS & 1 STUPID. With best regards to those who saved the face of mother Manipur! Ema Leibaakna Yaiphare !

Dear Editor ,

Words of Gratitude:
For a Blooming Ema keithel and a Blooming spiritual home of polo
Blooming Manipur, an initiative inspired by Britain in Bloom, has been making efforts to encouraged and transformed the land we called our home with some loving and caring gardening acts. We are glad to have had the opportunity in maintaining a community garden at Ema keithel by planting flowers in hanging baskets and indigenous leafy Urum trees at the historic market and trying to transformed the historic market into a blooming pride. We continually seek to encouraged and promote a wider participation in this community gardening initiative especially from the hardworking Ema and ebens and instilled a sense of ownership and transformed it into a Blooming Keithel.

Nemesis for diabolic misdeeds of Congress

inc

With or without mandate the Congress has ruled the nation by default for quite a long time. Because of the high integrity and honestly inherited from the Congress leaders of pre-independence era the present Congress leaders were so elated that they had started working as if they were the megalomaniacs. They had overlooked the interest for common people and started working for their own interest. Wittingly or unwittingly they had committed a series of high profile scams viz CWG, 2G-Spectrum, Coalgate, Railgate etc. Even the CBI had been coded to function as a congress bureau of investigation. Ultimately the Supreme Court had to interfere and said “CBI is the caged parrot” and given directives for setting it free. Also in the recent past the hypocrisy of discredited congress leadership has been graphically exposed by print and electronic media. At the same time because of independent free press unwanted price rise, high corruption, poor governance, compromise at border issue has come to the public domain just before the so called semi-finale of 2014- PE (parliamentary election). Then as a natural consequence congress has been defeated completely in the Assembly election of Delhi, Rajashthan, Madhyapradesh and Satishgard. This is nothing but the nemesis for the diabolic misdeeds of congress led UPA Govt.

Yesterday the finale 2014-PE has been started. The writings on the walls are crystal clear that the congress led UPA govt has no probability to come back after 16th May 2014. Now facing its unavoidable evil fortune congress is rather confused and nervous. As per Indian psephologists congress is a sinking boat today. Many senior sitting MPs like Mr. P. Chidambaram, Mr. Manish Tiwary, Mr. Jitendra Malik etc have refused to contest. Many other leaders like Mr. Bhagirath Prasad, Mr. Rao Inderjeet etc have deserted congress and are contesting on BJP tickets. Also there are congress candidate like Mr. Ramesh Chand Tomar (Goutam Budh Nagar constituency,UP) who has deserted congress after passing the scrutiny and has joined BJP. Now the unexpressed reality is that many senior leaders no longer have faith in Rahul Gandhi’s leadership. General Secretary Janardan Dwivedi has advocated for Mrs Priyanka Gandhi Badhra to take the reign of INC. But the high command has kept his proposal in deep freeze saying it is good but the timing is wrong. Mr. Rahul’s inconsistency is also one of the main factors of decaying the party. With respect to the Adarsh scam Rahul had said that tented leaders including Mr. Ashok Chavan would not be excused. However corrupted leaders like Mr. Ashok Chavan, Mr. Pawan Kumar Bansal etc have been given the party tickets. In addition to the inconsistency he keeps on changing his stand on many important national issues. It seems he is utterly confused.

Congress is anti-people in Manipur. Having annexed Manipur under duress Congress has always been treating Manipur as a colony. The first Congress PM Jawaharlal Nehru had given the Kabo Valley to Myanmar (Then Burma) bypassing the Manipur leaders. With the knowledge of the congress high command, Local Congress leaders viz Mr.Rishang Keishing, Mr.Gaikhangam, Mr. Ngajokpa and many other leaders had unsuccessfully tried to disintegrate Manipur. During the present congress regime a large portion of Manipur has been lost to Myanmar. World famous record of two month old economic blockade took place in Manipur. Jungle Raj is prevailing in Manipur without any development programs. State as well as Central govts have refused to recognize Irom Sharmila who is one fast-unto-death to get the inhuman AFSPA-58 removed. However CM O.Ibobi had secretly tried to coax the Iron Lady to give up the fast and join the Congress to fight politically to get the act repealed from Manipur. The Iron Lady had taken a good decision by rejecting the CM’s sinister offer. Mr. O.Ibobi, with a very low integrity and honesty, has made a hollow claim that even if a super power tries to disintegrate Manipur it would not be possible. He is better to come out of his well and realize how the Telengana State had been created in spite of the huge protest spearheaded by the then CM Kiran Kumar Reddy in tandem with other political leaders and lakhs of Telugu population. Does our CM have the guts to protest against his decision of his so-called high command (Madam Soniaji)? No, he can’t. He is simply howling to get the vote for the incompetent Congress candidates who have apologized to their respective voters for they could not implement pro-people schemes. The same lethargic inactive candidates have begged the public to elect them again so that they would be able to accomplish the good job they could not do earlier. They have admitted themselves to be failure representatives of the people. So why should we give them another chance? Under the prevailing political scenario if we all vote for BJP candidates it will surely enhance the prospect of modeling a resurgent Manipur. Congress MLA O. Landhoni has also appealed not to vote for candidates of potentially unviable political parties. At present Congress is a sinking boat. The so-called Third Front has already been decimated before being realized and the AAP has imploded due to their internal problems. And unfortunately AAP founder leaders Arvind Kejriwal and Yogendra Yadav have been attacked every now and then in full public view. Unfortunately today also after being garlanded Mr. Kejriwal has been slapped by an auto driver in south Delhi. Hence keeping in view the nationwide popular BJP wave, we all should vote for BJP candidate Prof. Gangumei Kamei on 09.04.14 & for Dr. R.K. Ranjan on 17.04.14 respectively.

A Cleaner environment for a cleaner and healthier society

With the decaying of our socio-political and economic conditions, which have become a hindrance to the path of collective progress, the perilous state of existence has to be transformed by interventions from many fronts. Social voluntary organisations including the leikai club has larger responsibility at the grassroots level in order to bring about the said transformation. Though one cannot deny the larger responsibility of the state institutions and the like, but the initial voice and action could be germinated from the local level organisations, clubs, including the women organisation. One important area to start with could be the concern for our environment which is at a pathetic state. Our society has become so engrossed in self-gratification of our individual selves. One crude example is how we manage our garbage. It was not of an issue when the population was small. That we could manage the garbage disposal in our own residential compound, which we called as lukhak kom, but now the situation, has changed with the growing urbanization and growing population density. It has become impossible to manage our own private garbage disposal system. Our self-serving individualistic attitude has compounded the problem. We love to keep our immediate vicinity clean and hygienic but at the same time we disposed it at the public space caring little for the collective cleanliness. The state sponsored ‘Zero Garbage Campaign’ has lost into oblivion after much fanfare by the vested interest groups. Whatever may be the reason behind it, one cannot keep aside the problem with the mounting and neglected garbage in our public spaces.

DTKF would start with a simple garbage disposal awareness campaign with the larger perspective of a healthier environment. The coming of Cheiraoba is one marked event wherein we can start the awareness with the general public. Every year a large number of people throngs the Cheiraoching. People come to pray, to climb the hill, to mark the beginning of the local New Year. But it is sad that people come with little awareness of their environment and the social responsibility they should have as responsible citizens. They leave behind a huge pile of garbage by littering on the hill tops. We must not forget that all this wastes product take a long time to decay in the soil. More particularly the plastic waste products for this would all flow into our drainage during the rainy seasons. It would choke the free flow of water. Not only would it also flow into the rivers, ultimately it would flow into other water bodies. Our precious Loktak Lake receives a huge amount of garbage every year.

DTKF wishes to start with a small intervention in this regard. With the coming of the Cheiraoba, the foundation with other likeminded friends and organisations will start awareness campaign. The campaign will take up the following steps:

1. Discourage the use of plastic water bottles, request the shops and retailers near the foot hill not to sell package water bottle. Climbers will be requested to bring their own water bottles.

2. Teach the general people the habit of throwing wastes into proper disposal systems like the dustbins.

3. This is also true that without the dustbins it is simply not possible to translate the work into action. We will make an effort to arrange dustbins in selected areas.

4. Educate the people of the gravity of the garbage menace through slogans and paper handouts.

5. Collaborate with other clubs and organisation for the said task.

6. Our volunteers will hand out basic instructions of garbage disposal on paper handouts right at the foot of the hill on the Cheiraoba day.

7. Welcome suggestion and participation from one and all to make it more practical and meaningful.

8. While creating awareness, cordial approach is the only way to win the heart and mind of many to actively participate for the good cause.

Your Sincerely
Brojen Sinam
President – DTKF and TUC

Open letter in support of Pu Phungjathang Tonsing for the post of Deputy Chief Minister, Manipur

Pu Phungjathang Tonsing Elected INC candidate, truly deserves the post of Deputy Chief Ministership for… more »

Pu Phungjathang Tonsing Elected INC candidate, truly deserves the post of Deputy Chief Ministership for the following reasons;

  1.     By virtue of being  the  senior-most amongst contenders in Political arena who have been elected 6 consecutive times in the State Legislature Assembly
  2.     Never in the Manipur history witnessed 9 Kuki MLAs, representing a single party INC. In other words all Kukis are in support of Congress (I) Govt.
  3.     Manipur  completed 10th Assembly Election in 2012, till the last Govt. there had  never been any Kuki representative holding the highest berth as CM, not even a deputy. Because till the 9th Manipur Legislative Assembly only  Meiteis and Nagas are given  the top position continuously.
  4.     If INC manifestos stands true for peaceful co-existence and equality amongst its citizens & leadership, they should never let this opportunity pass in vain  against Shri Phungzathang, the senior most among his colleagues.
  5.     High Command authorities ought to remember the sacrificial contribution towards Indian Freedom movement led by Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose ( INA) wherein thousands of  Kukis joined him and  fought for free India  till their last breath. Even today a handful INA pensioners are still alive in our midst  to bear living witness to the greatest contribution of our forefathers for our country in general and Manipur in particular [for Azaadi Hindustan]
  6.     As a saying goes “Impossible is found only in the dictionary of fools” and  “All the worlds a stage..”
  7.     It is our hope and fervent expectation from Indian rulers that they ought to realize their commitment  and sincerity to downtrodden  bonafide citizen without any biasness and discrimination.
  8.     GOD Bless the newly form Govt. of Manipur.

Anal Students’ Forum, Manipur sent us this grievances letter on behalf of the Chakpikarong Sub-Divisional Anal Naga Chiefs’ Association (CSDANCA), Chandel District which has not been addressed by Concern MLA (41 A/C, Chandel) and the Govt. failed to do the needful inspite of repeated appeals. Condition of School – CSDANCA Public Grievances – Neglected by Concerned Authorities

Sir,
I, on behalf of the people of Chakpikarong area sincerely request your goodself to kindly publish the following facts & concern of the people of the Chakpikarong area in daily news papers on special ground.
1. The present condition of the portion of the State Highway in between sugnu & chakpikarong is deteriorated and looks horrid. The people of the area in particular and commuters in general have been facing much hardship and inconveniences. As a result, the number of passenger buses/vehicles plying on this road is reduced. We approached the concerned authority to look into the matter in time & again but paid no heed to it and the road remain unrepaired till date.
2. It is very disappointing that since the close of SBI Chakpikarong branch we appealed to the concerned authority, the Govt. of Manipur for reopening of the said Bank soon but in spite of our appeal, the concerned authority has not done enough and taken up appropriated steps to reopen the SBI till date. As a result, Govt. Employees, Ex-servicemen, NGOs, Registered Societies, MGNREGS job card holders & general public faced much hardships and inconveniences. To redress the grievances of the general public, the concerned authority is requested to delve into the matter and reopen the SBI chakpikarong branch at the soonest.
3. In order to keep the people healthy, PHC Chakpikarong play important role in rural area. Patients from different parts of near & far flung places are brought to PHC Chakpikarong for treatment. However, due to absence of Medical Officer i/c and shortage of nurses/staff and inadequate supply of required lifesaving drugs/medicines & equipment. Patients are not given proper treatment at PHC Chakpikarong. Therefore, the concerned authority, Govt. of Manipur is appealed to take up expeditious action in this regard and send Medical Officer to PHC Chakpikarong as soon as possible. So as to redress the grievances of the people of the Chakpikarong area.
4. The Chakpikarong Govt. High School is the only well run institution in Chakpikarong sub-division, However it’s very disappointing that the School is lagging behind due to apathy of the Govt. The infrastructure of the school regarding the equipment of Lab., School Lib., Sports goods are not supplied and encouraged. The Headmaster and the teaching staff are urged and advised to coordinate with the members of the school management & development committee for better running of the school.
Therefore, Your goodself is requested to kindly publish above mentioned facts and concern of the people of Chakpikarong area in your daily news paper on special ground.

With regard,

Yours faithfully,

Letter to the Honorable Prime Minister, Dr. Manmohan Singhji, Sitting 10,000 miles away here in… more »

Letter to the Honorable Prime Minister, Dr. Manmohan Singhji,

Sitting 10,000 miles away here in USA I keep on dreaming when I will return to my motherland and will get my dream home. With every passing day my dream is becoming a nightmare.
It all started in year 2006. I invested my life’s saving to buy a flat. Many of us have to take bank loan and with every passing year interest rate is going higher and higher. Project was undertaken by  Runwal Group, who are leading builders of Mumbai. We were shown all the clearance paper approved by BMC, also all the loans were sanctioned by the nationalized banks and project was going on smoothly, as per the agreement we were paying loans in installment based on casting of each floor.
Then suddenly there was a bolt from the blue. One NGO Bombay Environmental Action Group” filed a Public Interest Litigation in the Mumbai High courts claiming that these tracts of land on which these housing projects was constructed was forest land prior to 1955. Mumbai High Court stayed any further construction on these lands in June 2005 which subsequently halted the construction.

Five years has passed. We are running from pillar to post, we have tired all possible avenues but so far nothing has happened. Case is swinging in between High court to Supreme Court. Several Committees have been looking into matter with no result.

Mr. Prime Minister please, tell me as a common person how will we ever know that prior to 1955 land was forest land. In that case how BMC gave all the permission, how bank sanctioned all the loans? We all are honest simple person, why should we undergo all these agony?

My other friends have lost all the hopes and they have requested me to write to you that if not during there life time at least after our death put some small roof on their dead body, but I am very optimist, I have been hearing that chief justice of India Respected Shri S.H.Kapadia is an excellent human being. I am sure you will use your good office to see that we get our home and I can return back to my motherland.
We have put our plight on internet.

Sir,

The world has become a global village and with times every university has started encouraging young scholars to study the ways of our immediate neighbours or bring back the lost brothers, or anything related with our history and culture, to make this world a place better place to live. As I decided to go for my further studies, I sat myself before the Departmental Board for my final interview in the prestigious Bhamo University, Myanmar. By the grace of God I was selected and my guiding professor ask me to do a special research work in India.

Declining an offer from one of the best Universities of a country for the country and above all my earnest desire to be in a land where my grandfather belongs was time taking decision, as I will be facing a lots of criticism if I try to intrude into someone political situation where those targeted people were so convenient with the system by now. Yet I ponder myself to make my last call to say YES and go to the place where my grandfather belongs to but never returns. The land my fore-fathers have accepted thousands of years ago to rightfully claim as theirs. A land I have never seen but have always heard from my father & grandmother and read about thousand times from the paper, books, journals etc. but all through internet.

The little I knew about my grandfather from my grandmother and my villagers – A young soldier on a trip to China with a General called Mou, someone my grandmother has never seen but timelessly mentioned that he was a Godly figure to my grandfather and his troupes, they were ambushed by the heavily armed Burmese armies, many were killed, many injured, some gathered back and continue with their mission, yet many lost their way and my grandfather is among the last category. My grandfather could never return to his Home as his right leg was no more, but with times he met my grandmother, a widower, and made her home, a Home far away from Home. He found solace in my grandmother’s abode but unfortunately he succumbed to his long due injuries after the birth of my dad, Tukhemi Asah (named after a legendary spear maker, both Chin & Sema having the same pronunciation and storylines) & his sister, Avetoli Asah (Asah my grandmother’s clan), before he could completely learn Chin language to share his life journey, native place, near & dear ones, his reason for taking arms, and above all the real man as to who he is/was, but with him all his wonderful stories were taken away. Villagers always say that he was cheerful young chap with a King Midas touch in every work. Grandmother says that on one dark cloudy morning two badly injured men resurfaced from below the village pond, the older looking man was carrying the younger one on his back though he was more badly injured. Villagers gathered around them and gave them immediate shelter even thought they cannot communicate at all. And with times the young man condition gets better but sadly the older one, a man my grandfather always addresses as Sir, the man who was with my grandfather as a trainer, group leader, rescuer, carrier, doctor, everything in his hardest times passed away due to infection. Giving away his life selflessly for his promising junior who could not see the glorious moment of his nation.

I’m excited, as in few weeks times, I’ll be in the land I always dreamt off, looking for my grandfather families and his god-father’s families yet equally nervous as I doubt if I knew their real name and their real spelling. MUGHATO SEMA was my grandfather’s name and my grandfather savior’s name was POU, as pronounced by my villagers. Finding someone by just a name called Pou can be a big challenge, as I believed there is already a tribe name by that three syllable but I have a ray of hope because my grandmother always say that my grandfather always regarded Pou’s tribe to be the eldest & and the purest among all the Nagas and he happens to be the eldest son of a big village King. (And here, I honestly do not know what does it meant by the word PUREST but my grandmother always insist me to use the term in respect to my grandfather words.)

The word Naga and Nagaland has become something like a hallucination to me after I decided to critically examine the similarities between the Sema Naga tribe and the Chin of Myanmar. But first of all I need to trace the families of the two most important people of my life, who encouraged me to take up this big challenge where majority of the promising students would dare too even think off, for two reason:
1. Chin state of Myanmar and Nagaland state of India is very far away practically in all terms even though the distance between two is much nearer than our respective country capital. But I dare to as I need to know my roots.
2. Trying to bring back alive a history long forgotten is always faced by a strong criticism from every angle, when such a community is well established and settled conveniently with the neighboring community. But I dare to as I was brought up in a place strongly believed to be my ancestral land yet my immediate great-grandfathers have never seen it. But fortunately, fate gave me the privilege to let me be born & brought up in that wonderful land so now it is my responsibilities to bring a connection between the two land. And truth shall always reign.

My paper is to study the similarities between the Sema tribe and the Chin. There are thousands of similarities between the two tribes like – the culture, tradition, village administration, political reasoning, kingship, facial structure, dance & festivals, language phonetics, even names, and many more. According to the oral history as per the narrations and comparisons of many scholarly works of both the tribes, many Chin scholars and historian believes that Sema are the lost clan of the Chins. If it is wrong than let us reason out together and proof it as wrong, or if it is true at all than let us embraced the fact as it has nothing to do with our present political issues as we are far away and every human race has their own story to tell. And the bottom-line is – truth can be never hidden away.

Brief history of the Chin: The Tibeto-Burman Chin peoples entered the Chin Hills some time in the first millennium AD, as part of the wider migration of Tibeto-Burman peoples into the area. Some historians speculate that the ‘Thet’ people mentioned in the Burmese Chronicles might be the Chins. For much of history, sparsely populated Chin Hills was ruled by local chiefs. Political organization in the region prior to the Toungoo dynasty’s conquest in mid-16th century remains largely conjectural. The first recorded instance of a western kingdom believed to be near the Chin Hills is the Kingdom of Pateikkaya in the 11th and 12th centuries. Some historians (Arthur Phayre, Tun Nyein) put Pateikkaya in eastern Bengal, thus placing the entire Chin Hills under Pagan suzerainty but others like Harvey, citing stone inscriptions, put it near eastern Chin Hills. (Burmese Chronicles report the kings of Pateikkaya as Indian though the ethnicity of the subjects is not explicitly cited.)

The first confirmed political entity in the region was the Shan State of Kale (Kalay), founded by the Shan people who came to dominate the entire northwestern to eastern arc of Burma after the fall of Kingdom in 1287. Kale was a minor Shan state, and its authority did not extend more than its immediate surrounding area, no more than a small portion of northern Chin Hills. The minor state occasionally paid tribute to the larger Shan States of Mohnyin and Mogaung, and ultimately became a vassal state of Burmese Ava Kingdom in the 1370s. Starting in the 1480s, Ava began to disintegrate, and Kale was swallowed up by the Shan State of Mohnyin by the 1520s.

The entire Chin Hills came under the authority of Burmese kingdoms between 1555 and 1559 when King Bayinnaung of Toungoo Dynasty conquered all of Upper Burma and its surrounding regions—stretching from the eastern and northern Shan states to the western Chin Hills and Manipur followed by the king tyranny. During this era, Nikhoga Chief of Sumito Asah clan in the Chin hills revolted against the Shan ruler by grabbing the land of the royals and its officials (Sumito clan is believed to be present Sema Naga tribe of Nagaland), they were known for treachery worthless oaths, the angered King tried to killed all the Sumito Asah clan but they escaped with the help of the Lia clan. Lia was a big clan but the consequences for helping the Sumito clan to escaped from the wrath of the Shan king lead to mass killing of the Lia clan every year, asking the Lia to bring back the lost clan of the Chin so that he may give a befitting lesson but they could not, Sumito chief always says ok to his proposal but the truth is they have decided never to returned to its ancestral land fearing of the repercussion, after than they hide their real identity and assimilated with the people who pierce big hole in the ear and erect stone monoliths with pride in the north of the Manipuri Kingdom. While Nikhoga’s nephew, Simi’s wife Putheli got pregnant while hiding in the forest & some few groups stay back with them later known as Simi Asah got emerged with the small Tiighaki tribe a break-away clan of Lia. Now Lia are one of the smallest tribe in Myanmar and Sumitos were never heard off for almost 3 centuries.

Toungoo began to weaken in the late 17th century. By the 1730s, a resurgent Manipuri Kingdom had conquered the Kabaw Valley from the Burmese. Kabaw valley’s adjacent northern Chin Hills likely came under Manipuri suzerainty. Burma re-exerted control over the region in the 1750s as King Alaungpaya of Konbaung dynasty conquered Manipur in 1758 and made it a tributary to the Burmese kingdom once more. Konbaung kings conscripted many Chin levies (along with Hkamti Shans) to fight in their wars in Lower Burma, Siam, and Manipur. The Chin Hills were one western region the Burmese retained after the rest of their western possessions—Assam, Manipur, and Arakan—were ceded to the British after the First Anglo-Burmese War of 1824-1826. While returning from the war from the Ahoms kingdoms (present Assam), many Shan and Chin warrior spread a rumours among themself saying that they had encountered with their lost tribe Sumito but nobody dares to take the mater seriously as they were badly defeated in their expedition. After the Second Anglo-Burmese War of 1852, the Konbaung throne’s authority in the remote regions was largely nominal, with the vassals paying nominal tribute and the British took over everything and after the political administrative change no one ever talks about Sumito again as they themselves are now under the yoke of the great empire.

Today, I’m geared up for the historic moment to come to Nagaland with the little knowledge I recollect from my granny stories, Internet and Naga Facebook friends about the land. I know it will be hard to convince people to accept my simple truth got through stories, similarities in culture and history, and after a critical analysis of hundred books. Here my point is – Are the present Sema Nagas the lost tribe of the Chin? Are Sema really a Nagas by blood or a Naga tribe in Nagaland because of its political-geography conveniences like the Kuki & the Dimasas? If they are really Nagas than why is their socio-cultural history & political conception totally different from the rest of the Nagas? They seem to be more similar to the CHIN (Burma). Chin is known by various names: Kukis in some part of NE India, Chakmas in Bangladesh & India, Mizos in India & Myanmar, Zomi in India & Myanmar, Borok in Twipra India, Siam in Thailand, Lia in Myanmar, Simi in Myanmar, etc. While the majority of the Nagas according to the books has similarities in a way or other but not the Semas? Sumitos were chased out from their ancestral land due to land disputes & the present Sema of Nagaland are still continuing, if I were to believe the daily newspaper on the net. Why is my grandfather calling his Superior Pou as Pure, who are they and where are they actually from? Who is General Mou, whom my grandfather regarded as the younger brother of Pou tribe? Why is there lots of similarities in folk-tales, even legendary names and proper noun between the Chin and Sema? Many people may even condemn me but no matter what the consequences is I’m still a Sema by blood, stepping into Nagaland to search my bloodline & if things work out well, the similarities my grandfather always told my grandmother will be proven true.

After all, I’m told that my grandfathers favourite dog was killed and lowered into the grave with him, which was the same last ritual for both the Chin and the Sema. Your valuable folk-tales, ideas, suggestions and criticism will be highly valued, either to prove me wrong or to help my dream realized through the thesis.

Lastly, any clue in helping me to meet my unknown relatives and my grandfather’s savior families will be forever indebted.

Thank you.

Sir,

On Monday (Aug 29), there was a talk show of Akhil Gogoi in news channel News Time. A caller over the phone said to Akhil Gogoi that his Hindi was not up to the mark. To this, Gogoi said that he would try to improve. I would like to remind that language is not a barrier for leadership. Mamata Bannerjee speaks very bad Hindi, but when she speaks entire India listens. So many people speak good Hindi in north India. Have they become leaders?

DMK party chief and one of the topmost leaders in India Karunanidhi simply has no knowledge of Hindi. He speaks Tamil only and sometimes when in Delhi, he speaks English. We need leaders who carry our problems to the national level. When it comes to national level, since Hindi is not popular in South India, the English language is the best medium. The Tamils are never proud of fellow Tamilians who speak good Hindi.

Lalu Prasad Yadav speaks very poor English, but when he speaks the world listens. He went to give a lecture in management studies at the Harvard University when he was the Union railway minister. He spoke in English and in the areas where he was not sure, he carried an interoculator who transcripted his Hindi into English for the listeners. The best thing about the leaders from Bihar, Bengal and Tamil Nadu is that they speak. Whether they know Hindi or not is secondary. The most important thing is that their leaders are not bothered about good or bad Hindi. They just speak without any complex. Actually one should be ashamed when one cannot speak the mother-tongue. Foreign languages can be dealt with later on.

We don’t want pandits in Hindi language. We need leaders who speak for us, be it in any language. Even a dumb person can speak for the oppressed people using sign language if he has the conviction to do so. A leader is a leader. We don’t need a Hindi expert. We need a voice. That voice is Akhil Gogoi. The message is important, not the language.

Yours sincerely,
Dwipen Gohain,
