Govt will ensure ADCs function from districts: CM

IMPHAL June 12: The State government will ensure district based administration and functioning of the newly elected Autonomous District Councils now that the situation has improved much, Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh replied to media queries regarding the centre of operation of the newly elected members.

The Chief Minister was attending a reception of the newly elected 47 ADC members of the party and another Independent candidate who joined the party today at the Congress Bhavan.

The programme was also attended by deputy Chief Minister Gaikhangam who is also the Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee president, party MLAs and ministers.

The Chief Minister congratulating the newly elected members said 6th ADC election has been a success for the party as well as the State as it was comparatively peaceful and cordial than the previous election and passed off without any major incidents.

Recalling the hostile atmosphere in which the last election was conducted in 2010, he said even after being elected, the illegal tag for the ADC continued which even led to loss of lives. However despite of all these circumstances, we are happy to have restored the democratic rights of the hill people, he added.

He continued we take pride that the government was able to peacefully conduct the ADC election within the schedule time and restore the trust of the people in democratic process.

The Chief Minister continued the parties which were opposing and boycotting the previous ADC election as illegal joined in the fray this year. This is a healthy sign as they have chosen the democratic political participation over violence, he added.

Deputy Chief Minister Gaikhangam also exalted the newly elected ADC members and said `We acknowledge the bravery of the candidates to contest with Congress tickets despite of all the intimidating threats and warnings.`

We value such participation to re-establish democratic rights more than the success of the 46 members, he added.

Gaikhangam also said that the function is meant to acknowledge and respect the contributions of the candidates and supporters to the democratic system.

Now we have to serve the people and fulfill the expectations of our voters who risked their lives for the party, he said.
