New Delhi, Dec 19: She was the best part of the mankind. She was that part which completes human. She was your mother, lover, sister, and friend. She was your hope, reason, dream, strength, and compassion. She was free, active, and fighter. She was everything that you need to ooze out a tear of happiness or sorrow. She was your pride that you fought, she was your honor that you kept, she was your love that you were proud of, and she was your compassion that you hold on to in times of distress and tragic. But she was outraged by creatures of the worst order, and the human kind cut their sorry figure in shame. The city of Delhi, the capital of India, the nation is ashamed of such citizens to say the least.
This is in reference to the recent barbaric incident of a girl being gang raped in a moving bus by a group of criminals in Delhi on the night of December 16, 2012. The North East India Image Managers (NEIim) would like to empathies with everyone who are standing together in this tragic hour and condemn such an inhuman act. The North Eastern community in Delhi is no alien to such tragedies and harassments to women from the region working or studying here. We seen much of it in yesteryears in Delhi, may it be the brutal Dhaulakuan rape case of a BPO employee or many other cases of violence against women. The culprits of that particular case are still unpunished, and the victim is continuing to live in the trauma. Similar demands were made and a lukewarm response from government has contributed towards a behavioral recklessness among a section of society that believes that they can get away with anything without any consequence. This needs to change. The government needs a change in their attitude towards treating such crimes. A swift, strong and deterring action is required to daunt off such barbaric incident in the future. Any callous announcement should be followed up with adequate actions by the book.
We all protest and express our anguish demanding quick justice to the victim. But at the same time we realize that the innocent girl would go through tremendous mental trauma once she gets out of the the physical wounds inflicted by the criminals and faces the world. She would need a support system in terms of friends and family then for a good long time to face the tough times ahead. This realization makes us feel the need to make that support system of friends ready for her which understandably she would find missing otherwise. As the world reacts with utter shock and pain to this barbaric incident NEIIM, specially lead by the women brigade of NEIIM, has come up with an initiative to create a circle of true friends for the victim to help her ride through the mental trauma in days to come.

IMPHAL, Dec 19 NNN: An armed cadre of NSCN-IM reportedly went rampant when he molested Manipuri digital film actress Momoko before assaulting her in full public view during a concert at Chandel Bazaar High School ground, Chandel district last night. The NSCN-IM cadre also allegedly tried to kill another two artistes by firing two rounds at point blank range but they escaped unhurt.
Decrying the incident, the Film Forum Manipur (FFM) has demanded the state Government to take prompt action against the perpetrators at the earliest. The state Government should own up responsibility for any eventuality if it tries to keep mum on the matter, L Surjakanta, president, FFM warned while addressing a press meet held at the office of FFM, Lamphelpat here on Wednesday.
“All the perpetrators involved in the incident should be booked and punish under the law,” L Surjakanta said.
The victim, actress Momoko who was also present at the press meet narrated the whole episode. She said a concert was organized by Mahamani Women’s Society, Chandel to raise fund for the Mahamani Youth Club at Chandel High School ground yesterday when the ghastly incident took place.

At around 7:30 pm, all of a sudden, one Livingstone, an armed member of NSCN-IM who was in inebriated condition entered inside the room behind the stage where the artistes were sitting. Suddenly, Livingstone grabbed her shoulders and inquired whether she was the actress Momoko. Then, she answered ‘yes’ but he repeatedly asked the same question and started caressing her hair. Livingstone came along with three other cadres who were also heavily armed.
Feeling embarrassed at the rude behaviour of the NSCN-IM cadre, Momoko swiftly left her chair and sat beside her mother who was sitting inside the same room. Then, her mother complained to the organizing committee about the matter. Moments after that, Livingstone came again close to to her and pulled her down from the chair and started beating her up like anything by kicking aimlessly, Momoko added.
Singer Prakash Khuraijam, who was performing on the stage at that point of time, along with Manipuri digital film actor Guna came to the rescue of Momoko but Livingstone tried to kill them by firing two shots at point blank range. They luckily escaped the attack unhurt, Momoko stated.
Momoko lamented that the audience as well as the police personnel who were present at the scene stood silent when she was beating up by Livingstone. The Chandel Police Station has not yet taken any action regarding the incident, she alleged.
Livingstone also shot several rounds in the air before the incident, she added.

IMPHAL, December 19: Renowned Manipuri film actress Momoko Khangembam was allegedly molested, beaten up by a man identifying himself as an NSCN (IM) cadre during a music concert at Chandel High School Ground, Chandel organized by the Mahamani Women Society, Chandel.

The actress along with several other film actors, singers and representatives of the organizers Mahamani Women Society called a press conference this evening at the Film Forum Manipur office.

Speaking at the press conference the actress said, the incident happened around 7:30pm of December 18 while she was attending a concert organized by the Mahamani Women Society at Chandel along with other actors and singers of the state.

The concert was organized as a fund raiser for the local club, she said.

Speaking to media persons, secretary of Mahamani Youth Club, Rose corroborated with Momoco and said that the incident happened at around 7:30 pm last night when the musical concert was in full swing.

She identified the man who allegedly assaulted and molested the actress as NSCN (IM) cadre Livingstone, 40 from Zaphou village.

She said, the man came to the concert bringing several small arms with him in an inebriated condition.

Rose also said that she had herself introduced the man to the actress and the other artists.

She continued that Livingstone had also fired two rounds in the air after going out to the ground and started spraying the liquor he was holding.

Elaborating further, she said Livinstone had arrived at Chandel just a few days back though he usually stays out of town and added that after firing the rounds in the air at the ground, he came back and assaulted the victim.

As of now the matter has not been reported to the police nor did the police came to investigate the incident, she said.

The organisers will convene a meeting with the village chiefs of the area in regard to the incident, she said.

Meanwhile, Momoko who was visibly weeping said that after introducing the fifth artist of the night to the crowd, she came into the backstage and was sitting with some friends when Livingstone came in and touched her and asked if she is Momoco the Manipuri film actor.

She replied in the affirmative and said they were introduced a little time back, Momoco said.

However the man continued to harass her at which she went near her mother and complained, she said.

Momoco continued that following her mother’s complaint, the organizers went out of the room and few second later Livingstone came in and pull her down from the chair she was sitting on to the ground and started kicking her in an inhuman manner without saying a word.

No one present came to her rescue, she said.

According to another artist Prakash Soraisam, who was also at the concert, Livingstone attempted to take his life by shooting at him, which he missed by only about an inch.

He said that the beating happened while he was performing on the stage and as soon as he came to know about the incident, he came in to the backstage and found Momoco lying on the ground.

When he asked Livingstone the reason behind his act, Livingstone push him and shot at him which he missed by an inch, he alleged.

After the firing, Livingstone was taken away by the locals from the scene. Even as the locals try to calm him he fired another bullet pointing towards Actor Guna, who was on staged at the time, he said.

The manufacture, sale and/or consumption of alcohol is prohibited in the states of Gujarat, Manipur, Mizoram and Nagaland in the country while amongst the union territories, the same applies for Lakshadweep. In Manipur, prohibition exists merely on paper with alcohol freely available in public spaces; the only difference being that there are no sign-boards or hoardings announcing its sale. Much like the cliché ‘open secret’, everyone and anyone who loves their drink knows just where to get their alcohol. In Imphal West itself, there is an infamous window that everyone is aware about. Canteens inside security personnel based compounds make easy money by selling alcohol to the public at inflated rates and then, even charging a ‘parking fee’ for vehicles that drive inside! For those with lesser money to spare for their drinks, there are the traditional rice brews available at various vendors.

Despite a major social drive taken up against alcohol use by women who were known as Nishabandis in the late 80’s and 90’s in the state, the irony is that even without a proper study or survey, it would be safe to infer that alcohol use and its sale has increased over the years. In Manipur today, there can in fact be no social gatherings without drinks being served. Any occasion remains good enough: weddings or mourning’s, births or deaths, lunch or dinner. Serving alcohols at social events and more so, marriage functions are taken as guarantees that there will be more attendance. Any social gathering without the red is taken as one not worth attending. Leave alone private gatherings at homes, official level events held in evenings almost always end with a round or more of drinks.

The impact of long term alcohol use and abuse on one’s heath and mental equilibrium do not bear repetition but the other side of alcohol use is that for if it is done in moderation, then the same poison can be medicinal. But a careful scrutiny of the culture of alcohol intake in the state will reveal that more often, it tends to be on the scale of a group bingeing together. Often, group drinking tends to lead into a subtle competition for the human ego on how much can one hold it in and how much more one can intake more than the other. The sense of ‘good’ that is built during the first initial drinks within a group drinking together translates into a false veneer of bonding and ‘having a good time’. People dealing with alcoholics seeking medical and psychological often point out that the advent of drinking is marked by persons starting to down a drink following peer pressure, egged on by friends who drink. When such incidences becomes regular over a period of time, the said person will associate his habit as a validation of sharing ‘good times’ and replicate it with other friend circles and then induct other people who do not drink into the habit. And when it gets to a point where drinks are stored in homes and drinking in isolation becomes a norm, it spells trouble. Ironically group drinking’s and drinking at social gatherings also mean that younger people who see adults drinking with freedom and without any self limitations take the cue from them and catch it young. In Manipur, the stigma attached to drinking or owning up to drinking by women means that they drink in moderation and within select gatherings only. This means indirectly that cases of alcoholism amongst women are marginal or not talked about for fear of social stigma. On a serious note, young boys taking to drinking is becoming a norm.

Considering that demand and supply of alcohol has gone up in the state, prohibition today is a farce in Manipur. A proper regularization of demand and supply on one hand, sensitization amongst youth on the various stages leading to alcoholism and its impacts and how to use alcohol in moderation may well be just what is needed.
