IMPHAL, December 13: A large number students and locals of Tharoijam, Imphal West staged a sit in protest demanding the clarification from all concerned regarding the whereabouts of two boys who have remained traceless since sometime back.

The two young boys have been identified as Thokchom Birjit alias Babloo, 13 son of Kumar of Tharoijam and Soibam Surjakanta, 13 son of Somen of Yurembam Awang Leikai.

According to Birjit’s father, Kumar the boys though from different localities, meet frequently being related to one another.

He said while Surjakanta had remained traceless since November 28, his son Birjit was found missing the next day on November 29.

He said he came to know of Surjakanta’s missing only after the boy’s father came to his home and informed them.

On November 29, Birjit had washed himself and went out of his house at around 7am and has failed to return till date, the father continued.

He also informed that he had received a call from his son on his mobile phone some days back asking him to come and take him (Birjit) out, but failed to informed his whereabouts.

The father continued he had failed to save the mobile number also.

Birjit is the eldest amongst three siblings with two younger sisters and is a class VI student of Pari Imom Shindamshang Langjing, while Surjakanta is a class VIII student of Pole star Public School, Patsoi.

The two families had inquired with all their relatives and friends but failed to trace the two boys, Kumar continued.

He said a missing report has been filed with Patsoi police already and further appealed to all concern to release the two boys safe and sound considering their age and families.

IMPHAL, December 13: The International fortnight observation protesting violence against women concluded today at the Lamyanba Sanglen, Palace Compound.

The fortnight long observation was organized by the Women Action for Development, WAD under the theme “From peace in the home to peace in the world: Let’s challenge militarism and end violence against women”.

Speaking at the function, Prof MC Arun, Department of Anthropology, MU who was one of the presidium members said, contrary to the present day situation where crimes against women are protested; in the earlier days during the 2nd World War, it was only condemned.

Addressing the function further, he said, the society has to find out the real reason behind all such crimes and see if it has indeed become a part of our tradition.

He elaborated that there are several other crimes committed against women in our society today which go unreported such as domestic violence.

Other presidium members during the function include The People’s Chronicle editor W Tiken, Seven Sister Post, special correspondent Yumnam Rupachandra, MNP+ general secretary Ojita Salam and United NGO Mission Manipur, consultant O Jeet Meetei.

The People’s Chronicle editor W Tiken said, discrimination is present even in the developed countries.

He also expressed the need to stress on education to reduce violence against women.

Rupachandra said all section of the society including the public and the media need to deliberate on the issue of violence against women.

Prizes for song writing, painting, slogan writing and essay writing competition were distributed along with best gender journalist award.

IMPHAL, Dec 13: The body of a man missing since November 13 was found today morning at the riverbank of Thoubal River at Sekpi Khongnangkhong under Thoubal Police Station.

The deceased has been identified as Thiyam Borsing, 48, son of late Mukta of Thoubal Kiyam Lai Maning. He runs a shop for vehicle spear parts at Thoubal bazaar.

According to his family members, Boring went missing since November 13 after he left home to buy woods to be used in cooking food for a grand feast hosted by him as a part of his daughter’s wedding ceremony function.

Family members reported his missing at Thoubal police station on November 30.

A woodcutter came across his body today morning at around 9 in a decomposed state.

Thoubal police has taken up a case in regard to the incident and the body was handed over to his family members after post mortem was conducted at RIMS.

IMPHAL, December 13 (Newmai News Network): The 2-day long Zeliangrong Folk Festival 2012 organised under the theme “Peace and Solidarity” by the Society for Promotion of Community Task (SPCT) at Namching (Maha Kabui) ground, Keithelmanbi in the outskirt of Imphal concluded on Thursday.

Speaking on the occasion, Manipur Deputy Chief Minister Gaikhangam remarked that the Zeliangrong community has a rich cultural heritage and described this community as a peace-loving community.

He added each and every ethnic community in Manipur has its own heritage culture, and this is the very part of the whole heritage of the state while appealing that no group should infringe upon the harmonious relations of these communities in the name of safeguarding one’s own identity.

The Deputy Chief Minister further asserted that this diversity is playing a big role in bringing communal harmony in the state and commented it is time for everybody to work unitedly towards all round development of the state so as to make it a prosperous land.

Later, replying to a memorandum submitted to him by SPCT, Gaikhangam assured that he will make maximum efforts to construct a Zeliangrong cultural complex office building at Tongjil Maril after preparing a detailed project report and the proposal will be intimated to the concerned ministry.

Gaikhangam also generously donated Rs 50,000 to the organizing committee of the festival.

Social Welfare Minister AK Mirabai, who was also present at the event which displayed different cultural song and dances, said though Manipur is a small state, it is adorned with different traditional cultures.

She said the Zeliangrong Folk Festival is held as part of the preservation of the community’s age-old culture.

“We should keep up the concept of oneness and try to reaffirm ourselves to protect the integrity of Manipur leaving aside the idea of dissolution.”

IFCD Minister Ngamthang Haokip also took part in the function.

He commented that the various cultural heritages of the state are now continuously on modification process to beautify them. “However, we should keep our art, culture, and tradition in their original forms.”

T Manga Vaiphei, chairman, Manipur Tribal Development Corporation, MTDC and MLAs Janghemlung Panmei and RK Imo were also present at the function.

IMPHAL, December 13: The three day long platinum jubilee of introduction of Christianity amongst the Poumai tribe concluded today at the Maniba Baptist Church, Karong organized by the Committee on Local Arrangement and the Maiba Baptist Church of PNBA.

The observation was organized under the theme, “Jesus is lord” and had commenced on December 11.

Karong MLA Alexander Pao, Keirao MLA, Karam Thamarjit Singh, Andro MLA Th Shyamkumar, former Minister RK Thekho, also attended the function.

Rev Dr Jonathan Ansar, Rev Piano Pani, Rev RV Thakzii, and Rev James Dhale spoke at the function which was attended by around 7000 delegates, from 80 churches of Poumai tribe of Manipur. 

Speaking to media persons at the sideline of the celebration Village chairman VS Veikho said repairing and construction of the road from Koide Village to Maiba Village and construction of a new Koide Maiba village road to Jubilee Hall particularly for the said celebration was done by MLA Alexander Pao.

The last two converts into Christian of Maiba Village were felicitated by Alexander Pao during the celebration.

MLA Karam Thamarj it and Andro MLA Th Shyamkumar also donated Rs 10000 each to the celebration.
