The police used teargas and smoke bombs as hundreds of protesters defied curfew clamped on Monday on the entire Manipur valley to demand arrest of a Naga militant who had allegedly molested a film actress and to protest the death of a photojournalist. The protesters took out rallies, blocked roads and burnt tyres in Imphal East, Imphal West, Bishenpur and Thoubal districts, official sources said.

JIRIBAM, Dec 23: Following the call for a general strike protesting against the alleged assault of a film actor and firing to two other artists in Chandel by Film Forum Manipur and other organizations, normal life was affected in Jiribam. While offices, educational institutions, Oil pumps, markets and shops remained closed while loaded trucks meant to go towards Imphal and passenger vehicles heading for Silchar were all held up. However, there are no casualties with regard to the bandh so far. Though vehicular movement on the roads was limited, the bandh was peaceful.
