A young Manipuri, serving as a Lieutenant in the British Royal Maritime Auxiliary Service, Khwairakpam Robin Singh, will receive the Star of Gallantry and the Conspicuous Gallantry Cross from the United Kingdom, for his exceptional bravery in week long fierce battle against the Al Qaeda in interior Afghanistan in 2011. The 27-year-old lead scout was part of a 47 member special force team, including 40 commandos, called in as a reinforcement to fight the Al Qaeda.

Four personnel of Assam Rifles were on Friday injured when a powerful bomb exploded at Monjang area in Manipur’s interior Chandel district bordering Myanmar. The blast occurred when the personnel of 9th Assam Rifles battalion were patrolling Imphal-Moreh National Highway No 39 at Hotel Point Monjang area, about 120 Kms south-east of here, at around 7.30 am, officials said.
Activist Irom Sharmila Chanu, who has been on fast for more than 12 years demanding repeal of the ‘draconian’ Armed Forces Special Powers Act from Manipur, was re-arrested by state police, officials said on Thursday.
A Delhi court has framed charges against anti-AFSPA activist Irom ‘Chanu’ Sharmila ‘for attempting to commit suicide’ under Section 309 of IPC on March 4, 2013. Sharmila has refused to plead guilty to the charges.
Social activist Irom Sharmila, who has been on a hunger strike for about 12 years demanding repeal of the controversial Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA), will be produced before a Delhi court on Monday.
Activist Irom Sharmila Chanu, who on Monday was charged with attempting suicide for her fast unto death here in 2006 while demanding repeal of controversial AFSPA, said she is following Mahatma Gandhi’s principle of non-violence and should not be “discriminated” against.
In an interview to CNN-IBN, Irom Sharmila said that she loved life and was only using fast as a means of protest.
An Army jawan was killed and two others seriously injured when a powerful bomb, allegedly planted by insurgents, exploded in Manipur’s interior Churachandpur district bordering Myanmar and Mizoram on Tuesday morning. Official sources said personnel of 11 Gorkha Rifles were on patrol duty when the bomb, which was attached to a culvert, exploded at around 6:40 am killing a jawan on the spot and injuring two others seriously.
Denying an involvement in the drugs smuggling, Colonel Ajay Chowdhry said, “I has been cheated and not informed what the merchandise was.” Chowdhry and five others were detained on Sunday by the police in Manipur’s Chandel district after they were allegedly caught carrying illegal drugs meant to be smuggled out to Myanmar.
The Manipur Police on Sunday detained an Army officer after he was found carrying drugs worth Rs 16 crore. The officer, reportedly a Colonel, was returning from Moreh on the Myanmar border and was caught at Chandel.
