A businessman has been allegedly kidnapped at gunpoint by suspected militants from Kangla gate in the heart of the city here, official sources said on Thursday. Shankar Lal Sahi, proprietor of Mangalam Plywood factory at Kangpokpi in Senapati district of Manipur, was abducted while he was taking a stroll at Kangla gate area near the biggest Khwairamband market complex here Wednesday morning, they said.

Five police personnel have been placed under suspension after a 29-year-old journalist was killed in police firing in Manipur, official sources said on Monday. The sources said a three-member enquiry committee headed by Principal Secretary (Home) Suresh Babu has been constituted to probe Sunday’s incident and the panel would submit its report to the government for further action within a week.

In Manipur film and theatre artistes have called for a bandh protesting the alleged assault by an NSCN-IM cadre on an actress.
