Clash of Sangma in Meghalaya

SHILLONG, Oct 11 NNN: Two Sangmas’ factors will dominate the next assembly election in Meghalaya. The P.A. SHILLONG, Oct 11 NNN: Two Sangmas’ factors will dominate the next assembly election in Meghalaya.
The P.A. Sangma led National People’s Party (NPP) and the Congress headed by Mukul Sangma are expected to be the main contenders to help form the next government in Meghalaya.
Both the leaders hail from the same community and they are from Garo Hills’ Tura.
Meghalaya is likely to go to poll in early next year. A couple of days ago, the Congress had announced that it would fight the poll alone. So far visible move of political party is witnessed in forming pre-poll alliance. In the present assembly, the Congress has 28 MLAs, the Congress has 28 followed by NPP with 13, United Democratic Party (UDP) with 10 legoslators including the KHNAM entrant Paul Lyngdoh, NCP and HSPDP has just two each while there are five Independent legislators. There were as many as 15 NCP legislators after the Assembly elections in 2008. Actually, NCP had 15 MLAs before the formation of NPP. Out of these, 13 had joined the NPP recently
Senior Sangma and his children—one Lok Sabha MP in Agatha Sangma and two MLA sons—have a large following in Meghalaya. For Mukul Sangma and his Congress in Meghalaya, the position of the UPA government at the Centre in the wake of Mamata’s move will matter a lot.
Whatever may be the cause, it is perhaps going to be the clash of P.A. Sangma’s personality and the Gandhi’s Congress.
And again within the Congres itself, it will not be wrong to say the rivalry of former chief minister D.D. Lapang and incumbent Mukul Sangma will also feature in the next assembly elect vis-a-vis during the ticket distribution of the party.
Meanwhile, the UDP and HSPDP are closely observing the development. For the NCP, the exit of the former Lok Sabha Speaker from the party is going to cost a lot. Last month, 13 legislators of the party had joined the NPP.

IMPHAL, Oct 11 NNN : The Lamyanba Irabot Ningshing Thouram Committee (LINTC) revealed on Thursday it would turn the historical place of Keibi Mana Ching where social reformer Hijam Irabot took up the first communist movement into a stunning tourist spot, apart from developing a library and another museum.
It is relevant to follow the path pioneered by Irabot in incorporating the unity of all the farmers and labourers in Manipur for a peaceful and stable state, said Laishram Shyamkumar, convenor, LINTC while addressing a press conference held at the Manipur Press Club here.
He said it is right time we follow the principle of unity-building path for farmers and labourers left behind by pioneer Irabot, advocating that now the time needs his thoughts on movement to bring about change.
Describing that it cannot be possible to bring change in the society devoid of struggle and movement, Shyamkumar suggested that the present generation should follow the footsteps of Irabot by remembering him.
Shyamkumar flanked by N Rashi Meetei, president, Irabot Memorial Trust Keibi Mana Ching, further revealed that the historical place of Keibi Mana Ching in Imphal East where Lamyanba Irabot took up the first communist movement in Manipur would be developed into a dazzling tourist spot and a library and another museum would be built up as well.

IMPHAL, Oct 11NNN: A public meeting along with a protest rally oganised jointly by the Anal Naga Taangpi (ANTA), Anal Students’ Union, Anallon Chiefs’ Association (ALCA) and Anal Women Union (ASR) in collaboration with the area level organisation was held today at the Mini Indoor Stadium, Chandel district headquarters protesting against the proposed construction of Chakpi Multi Purpose Project at Chakpi River in Chandel district.
Addressing at the gathering, WNG. Kohring Victor, president of ANTA said the proposed project will undoubtedly affect the minority tribe and other small tribe community residing in and around the site as it will incurred loss of socio-economy and will make undesirable changes on demography, religion, militarisation and moral integrity. Ckakpi river is the lifeline and bread and butter for the people of Chandel district and its surrounding other tribes and moreover there is apprehensions on break-down of the dam as the site is under seismological zone. Under these circumstances, how can the villages welcome the project ? he asked.
Jusifying its stand on the multi-project, Kohring Victor said, “Why the state government is submitting its proposal again and again to the Central government for approval in the name of developmental project at the cost of our land and resources. If the government is concern for us then there are many things to be done in the district like repairing the bad road condition from Pallel to Chandel, Chandel to Chakpikarong via Sugnu, Lack of infrastructures at PHC, Chakpikarong and revocation of Vomku Block; good schools, bridges at specify location etc “.
During the meeting, a public declaration was announced stating that the project is anti-people in nature and is proposed at a high cost not in the interest of the indigenous people of Chandel where initial investigation, survey and proposal were done without the knowledge and consent of the people.

IMPHAL, Oct 11 NNN: As announced earlier, the Joint Action Committee (JAC) seeking safe release of Irungbam Irabanta allegedly abducted by NSCN-IM will impose an indefinite economic blockade along Imphal-Ukhrul road from Friday.
The JAC has asked the state Government which has allegedly not taken any step yet to secure the release of Irabanta event after more than four months of his abduction that if it has become a Government running under the diktat of the rebel NSCN-IM.
The Irabanta JAC convenor, Radhamani said notwithstanding the statement of state Government which said that some cadres were involved in the kidnapping of Irabanta, it is still hesitant to take prompt action against the outfit.
He said such attitude of the Government has prompted the JAC as well as the public to put a question mark on it. The JAC has also submitted several representations regarding the issue time and again to the state Chief Minister and the state Home Minister, but they have chosen to remain silent which clearly indicates that the Government does not want to solve it, he lamented.
Radhamani added the 48-hour Imphal-Ukhrul road bandh enforced by the JAC ends Thursday midnight and reiterated that the indefinite economic blockade along the same route that the JAC proposed earlier will begin from tomorrow as the Government refuses intervention on the serious matter till today.
Being an outfit under ceasefire with the Central Government the NSCN-IM should not indulge in such kidnapping case, the JAC convenor asserted, warning that any eventual untoward incident should be owned up by both the state Government and NSCN-IM.
Irabanta, a sand supplier for Maphou Dam construction, was allegedly kidnapped by the NSCN-IM on May 27 last. Since then his whereabouts is unknown till today. He is a resident of Nongdam Maning Leikai in Imphal East.
