CM opens national seminar on tourism

Chief Minister inaugurating a two day seminar on “Strategy for Tourism Development and Capacity Building in Manipur “ at Hotel Classic.

IMPHAL, April 19 MNS NNN: Manipur Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh Friday opened a national level 2-day seminar “Strategy for Tourism Development & Capacity Building in Manipur” at Classic Hotel in Imphal.
Inaugurating the seminar being organized by Manipur Tourism Forum under the sponsorship of the state Government, Ibobi said tourism is one of the industries in the world which is fast growing. He said Manipur attracts tourists from around the globe by its rich art and culture, historical places, traditional game and sports besides being a land where the game of Sagol Kangjei (polo) actually originated.
The Chief Minister also said that it is necessary to develop a condition in the business of tourim to fine tune with the tourists from outside.
He said, “Tourism has to be developed as a long term policy so we need to protect the local environment as well its culture at the most favorable level because a successful tourism should not harm any local way of life.”
Ibobi further suggested that public-private partnership should be opted by both the Government and private stakeholders to promote tourism in the state, assuring that the Government will always help private entrepreneurship that provide jobs to the people and educated youths of the state.
He called upon the people to take benefit of tourism industry which is one of the fastest growing sector in the whole world.
It benefits people and without major investments, people, organisations can involve themselves in this sector he further added. Ibobi said all the potentials of any area or state should be fully utilised to attract visitors he said. As Manipur is the gateway to South East Asian countries there is also a strong possibility of attracting tourists from the neighbouring countries he observed.
M. Prithiviraj, Parliamentary Secretary Tourism said the
Manipur Tourism Forum has done a wonderful work by organising
such a seminar and he expressed assurance to continue supporting the Forum. President of the Forum Dr Dhabali said after the government of India allowed foreigners to visit Manipur and other north eastern states during the last two years numbers of increased have swelled four times. Manipur Chief Secretary, DS Poonia said Manipur should utilise its advantages of rich culture, climate, natural beauty, games and sports and warmly people to attract visitors.
Representatives from various airlines, tourist organisations, North Eastern Council and other states are also taking part in the seminar. In the first session today, RK Nimai chaired a session in which O Nabakishore spoke about Look East Policy, Hrishikesh Midal about hospitality, Dr Kh Palin about health care tourism , Hemant Katoch about war memorial tourism and N Ibungochoubi about eco adventure and ethnic tourism.

Pork consumption decline in Manipur, Mizoram

AIZAWL/IMPHAL, April 19 NNN: Consumption of pork in Mizoram and Manipur has become less in Mizoram and Manipur following the outbreak of swine flu. In Manipur, veterinarians are still investigating the reasons for the death of pigs in large number at Heingang Chonthabi and Luwang shangbam areas of Imphal East district following the reports made in local newspapers. However, in the case of Mizoram, doctors have confirmed it as ‘Classical Swine Fever’.
Imports of pigs from Myanmar to Mizoram has been restricted following the outbreak of the swine flu. Restriction on selling of ‘affected pork’ by the administration continues in the state capital Aizawl for the past one month and this restriction will continue till May end.
Owing to the spreading of flu among the pigs in Aizawl area in the past one month which has been proved to be ‘Classical Swine Fever’, the Sub-Divisional Magistrate, Aizawl Sadar Sub Division, Aizawl here has been imposing certain restrictions regarding selling of pork in the market and related activities.
As the news of the spread of pig flu spread, the denizens of Aizawl have started avoiding their delicacy. The sales of pork also dropped rapidly. Chicken and beef have been substituting the menu in marriage feasting these days.
As reported earlier, taking advantage of the situation, the dealers have hiked the price of chicken. Prior to the detection of the swine flu chicken (dressed) was sold at Rs 180 per kilogram but these days it has risen to Rs 250 or more a kilogram in Aizawl.
The ‘Classical Swine Fever’ was detected after examination at Laboratory of College of Veterinary Science & Animal Husbandry in Selesih last month.

EYC tenders apology to tribal students

IMPHAL, April 19 NNN: Eastern Youth Club of Soibam Leikai has tendered apology to the tribal students in connection with the recent attack on the tribal students.
With regard to the Khanglabung Leirak, Soibam Leikai of Imphal incident where tenant tribal students were attacked, a joint meeting was initiated by the Superintendent of Police, Imphal East , Angam Kamei at his office chamber today.
According to the Kuki Students Organisation, Imphal Branch (KSO-IB) and Tangkhul Katamnao Long, Imphal (TKLI), the Eastern Youth Club admitted to their act and tendered their apology on behalf of the locals to the victim tenant tribal students, KSO and TKLI. “Moreover, senior citizens of the locality present in the meeting expressed concern over the incident and assured the student leaders as well as the victim students that, they will take up necessary precautionary measures not to recur such unwanted incident in future and request the tenant students to forgive and forget one another and live without fear in the locality once again,” the KSO and TKLI said.
The Kuki Students Organization, Imphal Branch and Tangkhul Katamnao Long Imphal (TKLI) also expressed their gratitude to SP Kamei and the senior citizens, in initiating a joint meeting to find an amicable solution. The student bodies also expressed their resentment over the incident and urged the local club representing the local populace not to repeat such unwanted incident on helpless tenant tribal students in the near future.
“The student bodies would like to thank civil organizations and individuals for their concern and support with regard to the incident and also thanked the Tribal Students’ Union of DM College of Arts, TSU of DM college of Sciences, TSU DM college of Commerce, Tribal Students’ Union of Modern College and Tribal Youth Council Manipur TYCM for the support and their positive responses to the proposed sit-in-protest on April 22. Moreover, informed to all concern that the proposed sit-in protest has been revoked as an amicable solution has reached between the student bodies and the local populace,” the KSO and TKLI informed.
Lastly, KSO and TKLI expressed their heartfelt gratitude to the Superintendent of Police Imphal East, Angam Kamei, for his assistance of Rs10,000 to the victim tribal students for the loss of properties.

AMUCO condemns killing of driver

IMPHAL, April 19 NNN: The protest movement against the killing of driver S Babu Singh in Manipur is likely to gain momentum as the powerful All Maniour United Clubs Organisation (AMUCO) has extended support to it and called upon all national highway drivers, employees of both private and government institutions to join a 2-day mass demonstration to protest the killing on April 20-21 in Imphal.
Announcing the proposed protest to the media at the head office of All Manipur United Clubs’ Organisation here Friday, president of the organization KT Rahman said AMUCO highly condemns the killing of driver Babu and torching of two trucks on NH-37 by armed miscreants on April 17. Rahman also appealed to all concerned not to disrupt the drivers working day and night along highways connecting the state with other states either in secret or open manner.
He accused Manipur Government of not taking initiative to provide appropriate security for protection of the highways despite frequent occurrence of such incident.
Rahman pointed out that Babu had lost his life as no security personnel were present on his way while he along with his assistant were returning toward Imphal after fixing the vehicle.
All the concerned should clarify on the killing of the driver who begged for his life holding the legs of the miscreants before he was shot to death, Rahman demanded. He said that scores of incidents had happened along the highways where the outfit indulged in kidnapping and demanding of ransoms and murdering of people.
He cited the brutal killing of Dr Kishan, Rajen and Token, forced disappearance of Iranbanta . Rahman alleged that under such circumstances the Government has shown that it has completely failed to maintain law and order in the hill. He said, “People who are posted in the hill are akin to scapegoat. Therefore, it is the need of the hour that the Government sets up more police stations and strengthens the police force in the hill.”

Two girls terminated from job

New Delhi, April 19 : Two Northeast girls working at Magique Restaurant in Saket, Delhi were terminated from their job without prior notice. The two girls were forced by their employer to give resignation letters, but the duo denied as they did not resigned by themselves.
The North East Helpline general secretary Dr. Alana Golmei and media incharge Bruce K. Thangkhal today visited the two victims at their residence in Delhi.
According to the two victims, Colney (27) and Boisy (21), they were working as hostess respectively in Magique Hospitality Private Limited, at the Garden of 5 Senses, Said-Ul-Ajaib (near Saket Metro), Delhi. Colney has been working in Magique since 2008 and Boisy since 2012.
Colney told the NE Helpline that she took leave on March 27 and 28, 2013 with permission from her general manager Premjit Kumar. However, when she informed the restaurant manager Puneet Saxena through phone, she was refused and being told to resign from the job immediately, as well as when she went to the workplace on March 29, 2013.

On 29 March when I joined my duty, Mr. Puneet Saxena shouted at me, saying that “I don’t want to see your face and the company doesn’t need you anymore, so give me resignation letter right now”.
“Puneet Saxena, the restaurant manager shouted at me infront of many people, saying that, I don’t want to see your face any more and the company doesn’t need you anymore, so give me resignation letter right now,” Colney told to NE Helpline. “I also informed our general manager Mr. Premjit Kumar but he turned down my request and said you must obey the order of Puneet Saxena since he is the restaurant manager”, Colney added.
While Boisy, who has not taken any leave nor absent from her job since the day she joined, was told directly to resign from her job by Suresh Sharma, HR manager on March 28, 2013. “Suresh told me, the company management had already decided, so you have to give your resignation letter,” Boisy informed the NE Helpline.
“I begged politely and requested him that I will not resign and he should give me at least one-month prior notice. I’m also having a family to support, I can’t simply leave the company. But if they are terminating me, they should give me a termination letter,” Boisy told NEH with tears in her eyes.
The appointment letter produced by Boisy shows that the contract is for one year but she was terminated before completing her contract period, with still seven months to go. According to her letter, Boisy joined Magique on October 5, 2012. Colney said she joined Magique on November 3, 2008.
Though Colney has been working for the last five years, and is one of the senior-most hostesses and highest paid employee in Magique, has met the same fate with her colleague, Boisy. The duo said that their managers were harassing them to submit resignation letter.
“Since we were terminated by them they should give us a termination letter and other necessary compensation as per the law of the company”, the duo said.
Boisy, from Manipur and Colney, from Mizoram are now jobless since they were terminated from their job by Magique last month.
When NEH general secretary Dr Alana Golmei talked to Premjit Kumar, general manager of Magique, he responded that Colney has not been terminated and she is still on job. Boisy’s contract period was over but Colney can continue her job if she wants, Mr. Premjit Kumar said. However, Colney said she was afraid to join it again after such ill-treatment fearing that their managers would harass her in some kind or the other.
“Most of our North East boys and girls, who are working in restaurants, BPO, spa, bar, etc are subjected to all kinds of harassment by their managers and employers. We have received so many complaints of such harassments. It’s time we take strong action against such managers,” said Dr Alana Golmei.
North East Helpline urged to the concerned authorities to intervene in the case of two Northeast girls, who were terminated by Magique Hospitality Pvt Ltd without any reason. The Helpline sternly demanded the employer to compensate the two victims with a three months salary as per law at the earliest. The duo has been subjected to continuous pressure from the employer demanding resignation letter.

Importance of Singda dam stressed

Manipur has very little number of dams. Amazingly we do not feel the need for constructing more dams in Manipur. Importance of Singda dam need not be stressed again and again. Had we not had this dam the entire Imphal area would have landed in a precarious situation without having drinking water? That situation had been averted with the construction of the dam. Chief Minister O. Ibobi has rightly praised the former leaders of the state, who constructed the dam. To save Manipur from landing in ugly situation in future it is time serious attention is paid in the construction of more dam to save water at source. A proper survey needs to be done without delay to identify the areas, where the dams of such nature can be constructed. Singda dam is facing threat to its survival by the dwellers at the side of the dam. Chief Minister O. Ibobi has given timely warning to evict the encroachers from the dam site. These dwellers are responsible for felling trees at the catchment areas. They have softened the surface of the hills by doing terrace cultivation. Naturally the soil becomes spongy and it absorbs water during the rainy season. Consequently the soil slides and runs towards the low lying areas. Prolonged siltation has raised the ground level of the dam reducing the water storage capacity. Now remedial measure is called for to save the dam. The concerned department must take it as a challenge to protect the dam. Coordination of all departments is called for. IFCD will find it handicapped to evict the encroachers. Chief Minister had also underlined the need for taking up a forestation programme at the catchment areas of the dam. Our jhumias are really a problem. They cannot grasp the harmful consequence that awaits when the forest wealth is damaged. All having said the matter will be forgotten once again and everything will return to square one. Concerned officials will not think of pursuing all that had been told to them by the highest authority of the land. Our bureaucrats, who have the habit of turning back even to their bosses will not think of doing anything. They plead the inability to check anything citing law and order as a factor. All these existing dams are really our precious possession given to us by the past. We have the bounded duty to protect all these dams be it Singda, Khuga or anything that is important to us. The world will not end with us. Let us think for the future. Let us work for them.

The second leg of the United Naga Council(UNC) political tour in Naga areas was undertaken in Hunphunl(Ukhrul) district in association with the Tangkhul Naga Long(TNL) and the respective Longphangs(Zonal Organisations) of the region from the 16h to 19th April, 2013. The political tour was carried out mainly with a view to study the socio-economic conditions of the Nagas which is weakening by the day and to verify the tall claims made by the Government of Manipur on schemes/projects submitted in the tripartite talk as development initiatives taken up by them in tribal areas. Interactions were held with village elders and public leaders of the areas visited and the common refrain was the loss of hope for a future with dignity on all fronts under the communal Government of Manipur.

The tour programme concluded with a joint meeting under the aegis of the Tangkhul Naga Long at the Long(TNL) Hall, which was participated by the Tangkhul Katamnao Saklong, Tangkhul Mayar Ngala Long and the Chairmen and Chairmen/officials of the Longphangs, Members of the Senior Citizens Forum, former Presidents of the TNL, Church leaders and social leaders. The contours of the tripartite talk process on the demand for an alternative arrangement outside the Government of Manipur was highlighted in the joint meeting which also emphasised on the need to be organised and be in continued preparedness for taking forward the people’s movement to its logical conclusion. The highpoint of the joint meeting was the reaffirmation of the fullest support for the political aspiration of the Naga people.

The entire tour programme was hosted by the Tangkhul Naga Long.

It is reported that the Government of India has reportedly chosen Mon district of the state as it is the most backward district in the state and wanting to uplift the areas. It is also reported that the Center has already sought necessary clearance from the state government for the establishment of the University in the district.

Methna Konyak, president of the Konyak Students’ Union (KSU), has confirmed this development saying that land was not the problem for establishment of the Central University in their district. “We have already conveyed that land very ideal for establishment of any Central University is available in the district,” he told NEPS over from Mon headquarters Friday. “But the state government is buying time taking excuse of not having colleges in the district.”

The backwardness of the district is not the false of the people of the district but the state government, he said describing the backwardness of the district as “man-made.” He further asked, “Where have the DUDA, Special Plan Assistance (SPA) money of Rs 300 crore, LADF and other fund meant for ENPO area development gone?” “All those claims of development under various schemes are only in the papers and not in reality,” he alleged saying the successive governments had been neglecting the district.

In the meantime, the KSU leader lauded parliamentary secretary for High Education Deo Nukhu for having visited the only Wangkhao Government College in the district and assuring for opening “science stream” in the college. “This college is the only college in the district,” he disclosed and further asked the parliamentary secretary to expedite construction works of various college blocks. All the construction works of the various blocks of the college remained dormant since long time back, he disclosed.

Konyak also said chief minister Neiphiu Rio while attending a rally in Tuensang promised to open a “Science College” in Mon district.
“Although we are very happy for the assurance of opening science stream given by the visiting parliamentary secretary, it is very appropriate to also introduce science streams in Higher Secondary Schools at least in Tizit and Aboi areas,” Methna added. He said at the moment, there was only one Higher Secondary School at Mon with science stream but hardly 50 students could be accommodated in a year. “So unless few more Higher Secondary Schools, at least one each at Tizit and Aboi are given with Science Streams, introducing Science Steam in Wangkaho College itself will not help,” he added.

The KSU leader also said there were shortages of science and math teachers numbering about 50 in the district and further opined that recruitment of teachers for the district should be open to all India level. “We want dedicated teachers here,” he added saying that “Our local teachers, once appointed to service in the district, will go away within no time along with the posts and the ultimate victims are the innocent students in the district.”

Adil Hussain supports freedom of artists at launch of NorthEast India Travel Guide

Guwahati 19 April 2013: Eminent actor Adil Hussain today appealed to rise above linguistic differences and avoid imposing dictating terms to artists at different points by different organisations in the state. In reference to the ULFA demanding artists to refrain from performing Hindi songs at Bihu functions, Adil Hussain said that rather than the language, it is the content of the song that separates a good song from a bad one. He also appealed to the ULFA to reconsider their demand, and work towards the larger cause of upliftment of the people during an event to launch the ‘Northeast India Travel Guide’ today at Guwahati Press Club.

Adil Hussain today formally unveiled the ‘Northeast India Travel Guide’ in presence of media and other guests along with Tanushree Hazarika, Managing Director and Gaurav Gogoi, Director, Eclectic Publications. Sharing his experience and requirement of the much needed travel guide Adil Hussain said “It has happened to me many a time in the past that when my friends from outside want to visit Assam, I am usually at a loss to tell them where to go and what to do. There was no tangible source available to me so I could recommend my friends from outside the state and out of the country the best places to see and provide tips on food and lodging. So, the launch of this travel guide is a big boost for people who want to experience the beauty of the Northeast but are unable to do so because of the lack of information provided to them. I want to congratulate the Eclectic group on the great endeavour that they have undertaken into the making of this travel guide”.

Northeast India’s premier publication house, Eclectic Publications, had undertaken thorough research among travellers to the region over a year and on the basis of responses from the industry associations, 20 such destinations have been selected and complied in the form of ‘Northeast India Travel Guide’.These destinations were selected keeping in mind the diversity they can offer and representative value of the region. The travel guide is very descriptive with photographs, travel and accommodation details of each place to support travellers.The travel guide also includes off beat destinations like Jatinga in Assam and Keibul Lamjao in Manipur.
