UIDAI_Image_2Very recently the Supreme Court of India has directed the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) not to share any information relating to an Aadhaar card holder with any government agency. This was announced while staying the order of the Goa bench of the Bombay Court directing sharing of data with the Central Bureau of Investigations for cracking a rape case.  The investigating agency had demanded from the UIDAI data base biometric information of some individuals from Goa to compare with the evidences incurred from the crime scene regarding the investigation of rape of a minor girl in Vasco. A petition was filed by the UIDAI challenging the High Court order which had asked to consider sharing biometric data with the investigating agency. The petition is a timely exercise from UIDAI, which has been a subject of criticism since its inception. It has its origin in the National e-Governance Plan adopted by the Government of India in 2006. This e-Governance is supposed to offer “a seamless view of Government” to bring service delivery to the doorsteps of the citizens. In tandem with that UIDAI was constituted in 2009. It promises better targeting of beneficiaries by uniquely identifying the citizens; reduce identity frauds for efficient utilization of funds allocated through central schemes etc. Aadhaar or the UID number is issued on the basis of extensive biometric information including photo of the individual, two iris scans, ten fingerprints and a set of demographic information. Civil liberty activist, Gopal Krishna firing salvos against the project, has termed it as ‘the same path which IBM (International Business Machines), the world`s largest technology company and the second most valuable global brand traversed for targeted asset confiscation, ghettoisation, deportation, and ultimately extermination with its punch card and card sorting system – a precursor to the computer – that made the automation of human destruction possible.’ In a representation to the Parliamnetary Standing Committee on Human Resources, he further argued that ‘UID scheme is an opposite of Right to Information. The latter makes the government transparent before their masters, the citizens. The former makes the citizens transparent before their servant, the government. It is a fascist plan – a naked declaration of war on civil liberties.’ Dr. Usha Ramanathan, a human right lawyer who has been doing extensive research on UIDAI has been critical of the project on many counts. One important area is the relation between the state and the people besides the profiling, tracking and surveillance. This is relevant with the expose of surveillance carried out by USA and its associate countries that has been poking their noses on other countries. India on the other hand took a bold step to imprint data of one billion plus population without any study on its feasibility, cost benefit analysis and giving little attention on the constitutionality of the project. The unique purposes of profiling were made loud and clear in a state like Manipur. Road side hoardings encouraging citizens to register themselves for UID were installed at important junctions of the town and elsewhere. On the hoarding are sketches of security personnel frisking passersby. One of the personnel says that those possessing Aadhaar card will not be frisked. Despite the barrenness of cerebral ingenuity of the picture and its text, however it serves one pointed agenda. The agenda of arousing fear among the citizens with threat and intimidation by the state to its people. A better text of the picture could have been: “you will be shot if you do not have a Unique ID”. Gopal Krishna argues that such UIDs have been abandoned in the US, Australia and UK. The reasons have predominantly been: costs and privacy. In the UK, the Home Secretary explained that they were abandoning the project because it would otherwise be `intrusive bullying’ by the state, and that the government intended to be the `servant’ of the people, and not their `master’. Is it a realization that the Government has put a halt of the project giving reason of financial shortage?

Politicization of Media

By Akshay Arambam The whole scenario of news in the present world is completely different from what it used to be. Any incident or news comes with a political motive.

By Akshay Arambam

The whole scenario of news in the present world is completely different from what it used to be. Any incident or news comes with a political motive. Important news are politicized to a great level for mere political gain and to score brownie points against each other. The blame game of the political parties becomes  the main highlight and the real essence of the news takes the backseat. Today, no one knows the real story. The consumers are fed what the media wants them to know. We get different versions or opinions. Indian media is highly politicized. Taking sides, supporting the political agenda and not giving the real news have been the main aspects of Indian media in the present day.

We get different versions of a particular news depending upon which newspaper we subscribe to or which channels we watch. For instance, a pro-congress newspaper always highlights the positives of the party in front pages where the negatives are being hidden in the inside pages. One newspaper will go all the way to praise Congress with hidden motive and the other will fire all the cylinders against Congress to put forward BJP`s achievement. In the process, we fail to get the real news. Accordingly, our opinions are formed. More or less, we get highly influenced by media in every way in our decision making process. It is slightly off the topic but while talking about how the media influences the mass, the incident of “Panic Broadcast” comes into my mind. On the eve of Halloween in 1938, there was a broadcast of the radio edition of H.G. Wells` “War of the Worlds.” Radio programming was interrupted with a “news bulletin” for the first time. What the audience heard was that Martians had begun an invasion of Earth in a place called Grover`s Mill, New Jersey. About one million people in US actually believed it and there was a mass hysteria. This shows how much effect media has on people.

These days, turning on the news channels and watching the prime time programmes is no less than watching some drunkards shouting and howling at each other trying to take each other down. Each news channel already set its agenda and propagate the issue. There is never a fair discussion. You can always sense the favoritism towards one side. No one is given the chance to express their views or clarify their stand on certain issues. One who can outshout the other wins. No matter how baseless he or she can be. Even the anchor who is the moderator has his own views and projects them. This is actually not fair given the responsibilities of the media in this biggest democracy. The Aam Aadmi Party sensation which took the nation with storm caught the media radar quite early with its inception. It was all praise at the beginning. Then suddenly came the backlash after the media doubted Arvind Kejriwal`s governance. It was more when he stepped down as the CM of Delhi. I am not advertising my support for AAP here but the way media dealt with it was quite sad. Media indeed has the power to make one a hero and eventually create the downfall for him.

Indian media has become extremely politicized and it shows their irresponsibility. Media is considered the fourth estate. It should be neutral rather than taking sides. Media should not abuse its freedom and power by being biased. There should be a fair and free press. it is the biggest requirement in any democracy. Let us all pledge for a free, transparent and just media.

Family claims skeletal remains found from Senapati jungle

IMPHAL, March 25: The skeletal remains of the body which had been lying at the Regional Institute of medical Sciences as an unclaimed body since March 11 has been claimed

IMPHAL, March 25: The skeletal remains of the body which had been lying at the Regional Institute of medical Sciences as an unclaimed body since March 11 has been claimed by family members today.

The skeletal remains were found from the jungle of Mayang Khang under Senapati police station on March 11.

The skeletal had however been identified as that of Kangujam Satarjit 65 of tabungkhok Awang Leikai, who had remained traceless since November 18 from Hengbung brick factory where he was engaged as a worker.

A member of the JAC formed in connection with the missing of Satarjit informed media persons that the remains was claimed following assurance from proprietor of the brick farm, Paojalal Kipgen to extend whatever help is needed to arrest the persons involved in the killing of Satarjit and to look after the hardship faced by his family.

However, the agitations demanding justice from the government will continue, he said.

KSO Sadar Hills warns of intense agitations

KANGPOKPI, March 25: The Kuki Students` Organisation Sadar Hills today warned to impose a 24 hour total bandh which will subsequently be followed by an indefinite economic blockade along all

KANGPOKPI, March 25: The Kuki Students` Organisation Sadar Hills today warned to impose a 24 hour total bandh which will subsequently be followed by an indefinite economic blockade along all national highways leading to the state capital within Sadar Hills if the state government failed to materialise the demands of the student body before March 27.

We resolved to launch 24 hour total bandh from midnight of March 28 if the Ibobi led government failed to come up with positive and satisfactory outcome before March 27 warned Thangminlen president of the student body.

The student body has been demanding the state government to post adequate doctors at the Community Health Centre (CHC) Kangpokpi where currently only two doctors are in service and to reinstate all the powers entitled to the addl DC Kangpokpi which has been recently cancelled as well as to rectify the term addl DC Kangpokpi to addl DC, Sadar Hills.

Thangminlen Kipgen, said the demands of the student body is the emergency needs of the people of Sadar Hills which needs immediate attention of the state government, however, the Okram Ibobi Singh led SPF government has intentionally ignored the demands.

The student body chief continued that due to non-availability of adequate doctors to attend to the indoor patients in the CHC, Kangpokpi, the emergency ward has remained closed since yesterday which has rendered tremendous inconveniences to the general public.

Various patients who need emergency treatment have to travel at least 45 kms to reach the state capital for medical attention which otherwise bears the indifferent attitude of the Ibobi government only to bad adieu to their beloved dear ones which is very unfortunate to happen asserted Thangminlen Kipgen.

On the other hand the only two doctors available at the CHC though struggling at the utmost and carrying out their duty over time could not serve the over limited patients, pointed the student body president before warning that the state government will be held responsible for any unwanted incident arising out of the government’s indifferent attitude.

Considering the festive mood of the people during Holi, the student body though hard to bear, had rendered sufficient time to the state government for immediate attention towards the demands but taking the advantages of it the government remained a mute spectator continued Thangminlen.

IMPHAL, March 25: India’s economy is based on the productivity of agriculture but the people lack the mental attitude to save the agricultural land state which can boost its socio economic status.

This was stated by chairperson, Oriental Women’s Labour Cooperative Society Limited, Jeena Potsangbam during the one day state level conference on Revitalization of PACS and Productivity of Agricultural Land of Manipur held at the Cooperative Management Cooperative Complex conference hall today.

Jeena Potshangbam observed that the situation is the same in Manipur where people often sell their agricultural land in time of financial shortage rather than protecting it.

Many fertile land have been used for commercial and other purposes like shops, institutes, houses etc, she said adding that such detrimental activities must be stopped at the earliest to secure ourselves of food.

He appealed to all farmers to use fertilizer at the minimum considering the health hazard it could inflict to the mass.

Potshangbam further appealed to the authority concerned to materialise the MoU signed between the state government and NARBARD to implement the Vaidnathan Committee 2004 formed in the year 2008.
