The Pursuit of Happiness

By Tara Manchin Hangzo
Friend, relatives and acquaintance keep asking me if I am happy living Manipur. “Chin, are you happy staying home, in a nondescript dusty town with erratic electricity and water supply and no outlet for entertainment?” I told them I couldn’t be happier as I am content with my present circumstances. I have adapted and accepted the change I have to endure living in my home town. This set me thinking that happiness is not defined by what other’s perception of what you do or don’t do. People forget that happiness is state of mind, how you feel, how you act, how you behave and how you truly accept your life circumstances. Let me start by quoting A.D. Williams, “Happiness can be found everywhere, and in everything. It’s our choice.”
There are no two way street about how to achieve happiness in life. How to be genuinely happy with our lot, no Mantras or Guidelines but each of us have to learn how to make ourselves happy by experiencing life as it come.
The problem with us human is we spent so much time worrying and thinking we will became happier once we achieve this or that. In the process we waste half our lifetime caring about unimportant things, foolish things, and unchangeable things and being unhappy. This puts a brake in our forward movement. This becomes our thought process; Happiness is conditional to getting married, being in cushy job or running a thriving business. We presume that unless we make lots of money we will not be happy. The greatest danger here is that we put our life on hold until the event happens. We forget to live in the moment and lived in the “if it happens mode”. Sometime the things don’t happen at all making us miserable.
The trick is we must learn to be to be happy now at present and be aware of the moment. Be alive! I know of an example, an elderly lady is always worried and anxious about the welfare of her numerous brood but most of her fears never came to pass and she suffers a great deal in terms of her physical health .She would have been much happier if only she has learn to unburden and surrender her worries to God .
In a small town like ours, our main worry is what will people think if I do this or that, not what do I to make myself happy. Our freedom of choice is curbed, each of us is given a choice, all we have to do is choose but we forget that it’s our life, our decisions and our choices and let other people run our life. We fear being the subject of gossip, of being talked about in a demeaning manner by family, friends, neighbours, and society. My advice would be a little selfish sometime and do things to please you. For nothing better to do people are judgmental about what others are doing. We end up getting hurt by what they say or do which is the same as living our life for them and not for ourselves.
We all commit mistakes at one point in life, we either move on or get stuck but others will not let you forget your past mistakes. The past cannot be undone, the question is: are we going to let our past rules our present life, so much so that we forget to live in the present making us wallow in self pity. People who get stuck in the past are the most sullen and unhappy people I have come across.
In our society how do we perceive success and failure, it’s just our attitude and our thinking towards them. If we see failure as not being an IAS/MCS officer or lecturers then you are just limiting yourselves to a few choices in life, you’re going to be miserable. You have to follow your own heart and passion and do what you love to do and stick by it. See the thousands of tuition classes mushrooming in and around Imphal. Someone who didn’t get a government job decided to start an innovative ways of earning, by doing what he loves i.e. imparting quality education to students. He earns good income and makes his family happy. The best part is that he is following his passion. In the process, he is exercising his brain and keeping his memory active and Alzheimer at bay.
There are so many career choices in life these days, those who love gardening and plants have started nurseries and are earning good income. They do what they enjoy i.e. gardening, watching and nurturing saplings into plants, turning them into beautiful flowers for people to admire.
A good example of leading an abundant life is by appreciating simplicity and nature. Whether you have a special talent or not you can cultivate or learn the skill. Just doing it adds an element of spice to your life. Perhaps it makes you feel important and significant, (who doesn’t need to be valued and appreciated in life) or gives you meaning and a sense of connection to your surrounding which is so important. We need to have a sense of belonging to our roots, our culture and our people.
When I hear the gleeful shouting of children saying “mei lak-e! mei lak -e !“ and Ei-shing lak -e, I find myself smiling because the children’s joyous shout for such simple thing like water and electricity supply for a few hours make them so happy. I too feel energised and bustle about doing laundry and mopping the dirty floors. Everyone seems suddenly very busy. Face light up and I feel we become more alive with the electricity on. What we have taken for granted and failed to appreciate earlier (the constant supply of electricity and water in other cities) elicit so much joy and happiness in us. Basic needs when denied have much more value and we learn to appreciate them more. Our government is teaching us to be prudent and thankful which are the two criteria for happiness.
I know in today’s time we live in a competitive world, the Global age. Someone will always earn better and do better than us. Someone will be is richer and prettier. So is there a need to compare our lives? Do you think the grass is always greener on the other side?
What we should be concern about is our own life, are we happy as a person or do we think we aren’t good enough in this world? And live with low self esteem or just because we don’t have enough of good things in life should we be unhappy? This is an unhealthy negative thought. Always challenge this type of thinking. What is “good enough”? As long as you feel happy with who you are, where you are placed in life, earning a decent income, doing what you love, eating your home cooked favourite dishes, having a loving family and home, isn’t that all that matters? Instead of envying others, burning in jealousy, try and learn to be content with what you have and if not thrive for a better life by working harder. (Sweet success comes only from hard work, not from getting a free salary).
During the lowest period of my life I always maintained a journal where I just scribble down what is going on in my head. I write what needs to come out. I called this “Self therapy” Who goes to a shrink in our culture; we rather hide than share our pain with strangers so the journal can become your confidante. This is a good habit and effective tools of “letting go of issues” that needs to be dealt with if you need to move on and grow in life. On the other hand you can also maintain a gratitude journal and make it a point to be thankful for all the blessings.
What is with the superstitious belief we let it governs our lives? I saw an ad for renowned astrologer in our daily newspapers these days. I am sure people flocked to see him during his 5 to 6 days stayed at our hometown. This reinforced my conviction that people do worry about the future and they resort to astrologer to help them cope with the problems in life. I can understand the need as we live in an armed conflict zone. We are always living in fear so we tend to worry too much even at the point of torturing ourselves. Some of our worries are justifiable as many young men never returned home safe and the next day the corpse has to be claimed from the morgue. The daughter never returned home and her corpse is found next day in the paddy field.
How will an astrologer assuage our fear? We have to do it ourselves, get rid of our insecurities and the wrong mindsets. The astrologer will only feed our fear and make it bigger. What if he tells you something and it never happens, you will continue to worry about it and be obsessed? Isn’t that making yourself more fearful about your future? Why don’t you start by believing in your own self worth?
The best thing is to face worry head on, don’t let worry stop you, face it. There is saying live out your fear by taking action, Pronto! A man who is afraid of heights should try bungee jumping and one who is afraid of water should learn swimming. Then we will soon realize that it wasn’t as bad as we anticipated and that we can deal with it. Be a little braver and see life as an adventure. Remember the “Bucket List”? The movie where you make a list of things to do before you bid goodbye to this world. Prepare your own bucket list and live it out .This will surely enhance the quality of your life. Dream about it and it will surely come to pass someday.
Don’t lead a stagnant live, go travel and enjoy life, be bold enough to accept change, and adapt to your surroundings. The world we live in is constantly changing, try and keep pace with it by doing what you need to do. If you resist change, you might get left behind. So remain flexible
Let me end by saying that Happiness is not an end result of things that happen. Do not pursue happiness – practice it. Smile, even when things go wrong. Create & spread happiness; be grateful and happy you will be.

June 18: For a Broader Viewpoint

The National Democratic Alliance was in power when the ‘June Uprising’ in Manipur took place in 2001. Atal Bihari Vajpayee headed the government as the Prime Minister then. His deputy Lal Krishna Advani was the Home Minister when the infamous “Bangkok Declaration” flared up intense agitation in Manipur. The people of Manipur were apprehensive that the territorial integrity of the state was on peril, as specifically the words “without territorial limit” were included in the agreement signed between the government of India and the National Socialist Council of Nagalim (Isak- Muivah) group in June 14, 2001. The geographical extension of the ceasefire evoked protests from people not only from Manipur, but also from Assam and Arunachal Pradesh as they feared that the NSCN(I-M) would use the clause “without territorial limits” to legitimise its demand for a “Greater Nagaland”. Widespread agitation escalated with demonstrations on the streets. In Manipur 18 lives were lost during the agitation. The then regime of the NDA had to retract “without territorial limit” from the agreement. Now in 2014, the same NDA is back in power at Delhi, with a new a Prime Minister and a Home Minister. The All Manipur United Club Organisation in its recent demonstration held a few days back has made their statement loud and clear. AMUCO has maintained that the “Bangkok Declaration” was a ‘divisive policy’ of the government of India. Expressing apprehension that the same government is back, AMUCO urged that the people of Manipur have to be alert. The organisation has drawn attention on the possible outcome of talks with the NSCN-IM and other underground groups under the Suspension of Operation; that the talk should not compromise the territorial integrity of Manipur.
13 years have passed since then. One may disagree with the observation made by AMUCO as misapprehension on their part, that with the coming of the NDA back in power the past would repeat. Yet, one must acknowledge their sense of retention in identifying the party who were the regime in-charge, who bungled with the words “without territorial limit” while engaging with the NSCM-IM. On a positive note, this year’s observation saw the joint effort of United Committee of Manipur and AMUCO. This is the second observation that the two apex bodies have joined hands. The issue of territorial integrity has its primacy, and it will continue to have as long as the ongoing talk does not come to a logical end. Here, we might also add that while the issue of armed conflict in the region is left, seemingly unaddressed on the part of the Indian government, there have been other new developments in the past one decade or so. For instance, the issue of climate change demands a joint understanding and collective action of all countries disregarding of political boundaries and geographical location. In the same manner, the opening up of the Northeast to the market economies of the world demands a collective serious attention of the states sans ethnic affiliations. The Trans Asian highways sooner or later are going to be a Northeast reality. The World Bank and the Asian Development Bank have already invested huge money in the Northeast for developing infrastructures. Multinational companies have begun its work to explore the mineral resources in the reason. Moreover, the Indian government has already decided to pump in huge amount of money for transforming the Northeast into a tourism destination. A major chunk of the money has been earmarked for the state of Manipur. All these developments are going to have a paramount impact on the socio economic and cultural firmament of the Northeast region. The people of the region have to be prepared for this. For that, a joint effort and collective understanding of the issues are very much needed. An isolated approach from an ethnic vantage point will take us nowhere.

State pays homage to June 18 martyrs

Manipuris suffer a lot from wrong govt policies, Kakomlung Kamei
IMPHAL, June 18: The 13th Great June Uprising Unity Day, jointly organised by the All Manipur United Club Organisation, AMUCO and United Committee Manipur, UCM was observed on Wednesday at Kekrupat.

Deputy Chief Minister Gaikhangam led several other ministers, MLAs, and people from all communities residing in the State in offering floral tributes to the 18 martyrs who laid down their lives for the cause of safeguarding the territorial integrity of the State on June 18, 2001.

Family members and kin of the 18 martyrs were also present during the observation.

Observation committee chairman and UCM president Y Nabachandra, vice chairman of the observation committee and president of AMUCO Dr Y Mani Khuman, and 32 community leaders and eminent personalities of Manipur attended as the presidium members of the observation.

Convenor of the observation committee T Gandhi pointed out in his key note address that Manipur used to be an independent and sovereign country in South-East Asia with different ethnic communities coexisting peacefully since time immemorial.

“Ever since the deceptive and coercive annexation to India on 15 October 1949,” he added, “we have lost our right to self-determination and have been living as a subjugated people, and under the guise of democracy, the Government of India has been conspiring to break up Manipur by driving wedges between different communities.”

Citing the Union government’s attempt to break the territorial integrity of Manipur in the name of a peace talk with an insurgent outfit as a glaring example, he said that the people of Manipur have not forgotten the ultimate sacrifice of the 18 brave and patriotic souls who laid down their lives when people revolted against the signing of the Bangkok Agreement of June 14, 2001 containing the controversial clause ‘without territorial limits’ which threatened the territorial integrity of Manipur.

The thunderous uproar of the massive June uprising is echoing in the ears of the people and the gunshots fired indiscriminately to suppress the agitation is reverberating even today, he said, adding that June 2001 reminds us all that people can give up their lives for the motherland, for the territory of the state and for unity.

“The people of Manipur welcome the government’s decision to let insurgent joined the mainstream. But if the Union government tries to use some insurgent outfits as tools to break the unity and integrity of Manipur, continues its conspiracy to instigate ethnic cleansings in the name of counter insurgency operations, the people of Manipur will stand tall and united. This is the collective stand of the people,” he said.

Today, the call for unity, the desire to live together with other communities as our own kinsmen as blood brothers with those settled in the hills have strengthened tremendously, he stressed.

Speaking to the media, Y Nabachandra said that this day is observed mainly to give the message that the territorial integrity of Manipur cannot be compromised.

Mangpu Kom, secretary, Kom literature society said that till we separate ourselves as Meitei, Naga, Kuki and others, there will be no unity among the people of Manipur.

He further said that but if the people of Manipur live in unity as one then even the government of India can’t do anything to the state.

Kakomlung Kamei, Kabui Mother’s Association, president said that the people of Manipur have always bear the brunt of the ill –advised policies of the union government and the state government.

She said that all the communities of Manipur will continue to live together and added that most importantly honesty is very essential in every community today as it is the most powerful weapon.

In connection with the observance of the 13 the great June uprising, unity day 2014, a one-day voluntary blood donation camp, jointly organised by AMUCO, UCM, RIMS and blood bank and transfusion unit, JNIMS was also held at Kekrupat.

Public rises again to URF misconduct

IMPHAL, June 18: Hardly a fortnight after peace signatory outfit United Revolutionary Front was engulfed in an imbroglio over the recovery of the bodies of two of its own cadres

IMPHAL, June 18: Hardly a fortnight after peace signatory outfit United Revolutionary Front was engulfed in an imbroglio over the recovery of the bodies of two of its own cadres buried inside its camp, two cadres of the outfit were caught trying to sneak away steel parts of the abandoned Spinning Mill this morning.

The two caught cadres have been identified as Sinam Suresh, 31, son of (L) Rabei of Chingmeirong Maning Leikai and Akham Pratap, 33, son of (L) Noren of Singjamei Thongam Leikai.

Angered by the repeated transgression, locals erupted and demanded proper fencing around the camp and to shift away the outfit immediately.

However, after negotiations with the deputy Chief Minister on the demands failed to bring any amicable solution, a mob stormed the designated camp dismantling the wall of the camp.

According to sources, the two were caught around 8.30am today while trying to smuggle out the steel parts through a hole on the northern side wall of the designated camp.

Soon after the incident, a team of police arrived at the spot and tried to take away the two, but the locals refused to hand them over.

After that, the locals called an emergency meeting at Loitang Khonou Spinning Mill and passed a resolution to hand over the two URF cadres to the police and to submit a memorandum to the State Chief Minister highlighting the series of crimes committed by the URF cadres in an around the area.

Moreover, the locals drew the attention of the government to take up proper fencing work to prevent similar incident in the future.

Later the two were handed over to the police at around 3 pm.

Sources informed that around 10 individuals representing the locals of Loitang Khonou and its surrounding areas met with the Home minister at his official residence at Babupara demanding immediate removal of the designated camp from Loitang Khonou Spinning Mill besides mending the fencing.

Although the deputy Chief Minister agreed to the demand of mending the fence, no understanding on the removal of the camp could be brought.

Aggrieved over the outcome, the residents reportedly dismantled the wall about 40 feet on the southern side and burned down the sentry post of the designated camp.

Responding to the mob, police resorted to firing tear gas shells and mock bombs to disperse the crowd till the filing of this report.

Following the incident a large number of Imphal west district police commando rushed to the spot.

It may be mentioned that the partly decomposed bodies of the two cadres, who had gone missing since March 18-19 were dug out from under the store room of the outfit’s Loitang Khunou Spinning Mill designated camp, on May 28

CHANDEL, June 18: ‘The Govt of India and Manipur must understand the aspiration of the Naga people to live together under a single administrative unit and expedite the process of creating an Alternative Arrangement which is a legitimate of the Naga people’, demanded finance secretary Naga Women Union, Chandel Tungshil.

She was speaking to the local media at Thamlapokpi village where hundreds of bandh supporters continued to block the NH-102 for the second day of the UNC called 48-hour total bandh in Naga inhabited areas, today.

She said both the Centre and the State should understand the demand is genuine and must be fulfilled soon.

Taking part in the second day of the bandh, general secretary, NWUC SK Shangring Lamkang protested the decision of the government ‘to form Village Development Council by suppressing the indigenous rights and culture of the tribal people.’

She advocated strengthening and empowering the Village Authority Act 1956 by amendment instead of the Village Development Council.

It might be mentioned that as part of the UNC called 48-hour total bandh in the hills, the CNPO in support of the UNC had enforced the bandh in Chandel district beginning from mid night June 16. The bandh is by and large peaceful and there has been no report of any untoward incident. The bandh will conclude from midnight tonight.

UKHRUL, June 18: Even as normal life was paralysed, no untoward incidents were reported in Ukhrul district during the 48-hour bandh sponsored by the UNC which is ending midnight tonight.

The town’s market and main road wore deserted appearances with all major businesses remaining closed while the public and all sorts of vehicles stayed off the road, especially from Dungrei Junction, Hungpung to Kharasom Junction, Hunphun.

Passenger bus and Winger taxi services along Ukhrul-Imphal route and that of town-village routes were severely disrupted.

The shutdown in the district was enforced by the Tangkhul Frontal Organizations (TFOs) under the aegis of the UNC.

Though telecommunications, power, water supply, medical services were normal, the district’s mini secretariat and other government offices remained closed during the total shutdown.

However, observance of the total shutdown was by and large peaceful as no untoward incidents were reported till the time of filing this report late in the evening.

The UNC had called the total bandh in all Naga dominated hill districts of the state, to protest the alleged communal policies of Manipur government and also to pressurise the Indian government to expedite the process of Alternative Arrangement for the State’s Naga tribes.

The bandh began from the midnight of June 16 last and is concluding midnight tonight.

IMPHAL, June 18: “The constituency of Andro is gearing up to produce position holders in matriculation exam of the State. The mission will be accomplished by 2017”, said MLA Th. Shyamkumar. The MLA spoke to media, at the sidelines of his visit to the evening class that was being conducted at the Andro government school.

He said the Andro government schools will compete with the private schools in the coming years.

The evening classes are conducted by hiring teachers from the private schools. Priority is given to the students whose families cannot afford to pay for education for their children. The current infrastructure will gradually be upgraded to meet the global standards, he said.

He also added that classes are being conducted both in the day and the evening so as to encourage as much students as possible.

Th Shyamkumar shared his confidence that the effort made by him will produce students who can earn positions in the top ten of board examination. The students are studying in Kastruba Gandhi Balika School which has only up to VIII. The girl students of this school also give free classes in the government school. The rest of the students mostly from Imphal East district whose family conditions are poor.

The schools are constructed from the government plan and some financial aid from the MLA’s local area development fund.

MLA Shyamkumar further mentioned that the newly construction of Andro Schools will be inaugurated on June 25 2014 namely Andro high school, Kastruba Gandhi Balika School, Poirou Khunjil School, Yambem school, Tamukhong school and Moirangpural school by the Education Minister, Principal Secretary Education Director Education.

He said when became MLA for the first time, there were only 30 students in the Andro government schools but now the government school has 1000 students and above. Still seven to eight thousand has applied for admission for next years.

We have provided facilities up to class tenth only till now, but the higher secondary will start after the government provides a higher secondary in the Andro area. The aim of the enlighten knowledge is not to depend the students careers on private school. The state government have provided good infrastructure of education. We need to use the benefits in right direction, Shyamkumar said.
