There is a tendency in Manipur for things to always return to square one. The avenue for a way out of this depressing stagnancy eludes the imagination of one and all, including our leaders, intellectuals and the numerous NGOs in the field of social works. The shared obsession seems to be to analyse, dissect, scrutinize and then either rubbish or glorify the past compulsively and then blame each other or else some external agency or the other for all the misery and misfortune that is everybody’s fate. Maybe there is some truth in this vision but it certainly cannot be the whole truth. To think this is so would be to reduce the social organism that we all are part of, to a simplistic mechanics of stimulus and responses only. And this we know cannot be, for the being and the soul of any society is far more complex, and we would contend, infinitely so. The difficulty in sizing up a society or its mores completely lies in this complexity and not to any attributable flaws of the past, as the current intellectual tradition in social analysis in the state seems to suggest. If social issues were so clear cut, and there were no ambiguities about remedial measures, most social problems ought to have disappeared by now everywhere in the world. The greatest thinkers have discovered, or others discovered after they are long gone, that this has never been the case and cannot ever be so as well.

The linearity of our social analyses has had some very serious consequences. For instance we seem to be a society which sees salvation in the past, at the cost of even ignoring the future. From the point of view of this limited linear vision, this is totally understandable. At least in its structure as a chronological sequence of events, there is a definitiveness about the past and this makes it comparatively simple to grasp, or at least it does not make it seem out of grasping distance. We would not say the same thing about the substance that gave form to this structure, but even here the same definitiveness associated with past events thins out the desperation to get the diagnosis right. The unfortunate thing is, this approach in our effort to come to grip with the past, is often extended to our quest for an understanding of the future. This, we would contend is flawed, for one thing there is nothing linear or definite about the future. In fact, the biggest flaw in historical materialism of the Marxist variety is precisely this linear and deterministic view of history and the future. This modernist outlook it seems is infectious, and hence our problem solving efforts have seldom acknowledged that the future is about discovering previously unknown and unexplored equations. The foundations of our mainstream as well as the numerous prevalent alternate politics today have never been built on any such broad platform, negating in the process the well known, one line definition of politics as “art of the possible”. Unlike the past which is a dead process and circumscribed in time and memory, the field for the future is wide open. We cannot erase the Chahi Taret Khuntakpa chapter in our history, but creative vision of the future can prevent similar historical catastrophes.

While we cannot possibly forget our past, or ignore what we have inherited from it, we do feel there is an urgent need for our society to tone down some of its claustrophobic obsession with the past and develop a vision of the future that is not everything about undoing the past or based on any utopian ideal, but in the light of it as precisely “an art of the possible”. Only when this understanding becomes the standard, realistic terms for resolutions to most of our conflict situations, both internal and external, can begin to dawn. If the question is about past wrongs and their impacts on the present and the future, surely as creative, autonomous beings that all human individuals are, we can overcome these impacts. In structural terms, democracy guarantees this possibility. In spiritual terms too, the prison of “coloniality” of even formerly colonized worlds, cannot contain this same creativity that gives the individual the capability of sizing up his predicament and affect the changes necessary to overcome that state of mind. It is depressing that our public discourses seldom have approached the future without the past as the sole measuring tape. Let our future go beyond the status of being just a response to our past.

EMA’s reflection on the recent bomb blast at Imphal – EMA – PR

European Manipuri Association EMA, UK
Press Release

06-Dec-2011, London:

The European Manipuri Association is shocked and concerned with the recent bomb blast at Hapta Kangjeibung, Imphal, a congested public area, killing an innocent rickshaw driver and injuring civilians on the fate full day of 30th Nov 2011.

EMA members are also anguished and deeply concerned at the lethargic and poor response from the emergency service to such an unfortunate incident. The manner, in which a grievously injured, nearly dead victim was handled by the security and the rescue team, choosing to question the victim instead of rushing to hospital, does not conform to the required standard of human dignity at all. This reflects the degradation of human values and respect of life in our society today.

We at EMA would like to see the government authorities, the local police and the hospital emergency departments as be the most responsible and highly professional teams who can execute their professional duty in the most considerate manner, in order to bring back respect from the community.

Further, EMA also expresses its concern regarding the media coverage of the incident. A lot of our members have expressed a deep sense of revulsion and shock, looking at the picture of the badly mutilated and helpless victim.

We feel that showing such gruesome images is not only insensitive to the families and dear ones of the victim but also to the viewers. As adults and responsible citizens of our society we have an obligation to not expose our children and young people to such disturbing images as it can have a long lasting psychological impact on them and their outlook to violence and crime.

We therefore appeal to the media fraternity to exercise utmost care and restraint while publishing such disturbing images and to be more sensitive to the feelings of the families and loved ones of the victims.

EMA salutes to all the ordinary Manipuris who showed their resilience and further determination not to get swayed by the blast, but made the Sangai Festival a success.

Lastly, we, at European Manipuri Association share the grief and pain with the family members of the victims of the unfortunate incident.

KOHIMA, Dec 6 (NEPS): The major road construction that has been going on since October 10 last on the stretch of National Highway 61 from TCP Gate 0.00 Km to IG Stadium—about 6 kms—has been perhaps one of the best road constructions so far to date. The quality, best materials, thickness of the layers are well seen while checking during the construction words and in some portions where the road alignments badly placed were also corrected. Many well-wishers have already appreciated the works carried out in the State capital in recent times.

It may be noted that the contractor of this TCP-to-IG Stadium road construction is none other than Mr KC Angami who has since the beginning of the construction been personally monitoring and supervising the ongoing road construction works. Almost all the construction works have been carried out at night time from 6 PM to 6 AM so as not to disturb the traffic during day time.
It said the portion of WMM (Wet Mix Macadam) base laid during the night has to be left for curing for at least 24 hours before priming is done after which it has to be left again for another 24 to 36 hours before laying of BM (Bituminous Macadam) and SDBC (Semi Dense Bituminous Concrete).
When asked about his feeling and reaction on carrying out such a massive road construction at the State capital, Angami said he was extremely happy getting such an opportunity to work at the State capital. “It is rather a privilege for me to work at the State capital,” he said. “Here I am not really concerned for the profit factor, but the quality factor, because it is my road, our road.”
He also candidly shared that he had been trying his best to provide the best road to the people of the State capital. He further appealed to the people to cooperate with them while carrying out such a massive road construction works in a place where “traffic jam” is routinely taking place. He also disclosed hardships he faced while carrying out road constructions at night time as rash divers had sometimes scant cares for his laborers working on the roads at night.
Angami also said in order to maintain longevity of the road; they have to see other areas to be improved. He stated improvement of drainage systems and frequent checking and repairing of water pipe leakages on the roads should be done. There are dozens of water pipes going under the surface of roads and even at some places hardly one inch below the surface of the roads while several pipes are randomly lying on the roadsides. As such these pipes are normally and easily get damaged with vehicles going over them. “In fact water is the worst enemies of the bitumen which is one of the main elements used in constructing roads here in our place,” Angami stated. “Therefore, I not only urge the concerned department to see in this area but also citizens to understand this reality.”
In most cases, it is often seen that people used to throw randomly water and other rubbishes on the roads from their storied buildings at roadsides causing in weakening the road conditioning. And in many areas, publics also used to unload stones, boulders, heavy woods and logs on the roads damaging the roads. The Department of Telecom also has added to the extensive damage of the roads on the National Highways as well as other roads by digging all along the road sides for carrying their underground cables. Regrettably, once they dug, these areas would remain fragile gradually affecting other remaining road portions. As such all these factors have to be looked into, if the longevity of the roads is to be maintained and expected.
Road and Bridge Minister Kaito Aye who worked to get the project through was happy to see the record construction works from TCP Gate to IG Stadium.
