IMPHAL, December 7: The closing function of the state level integration camp on youth for promotion of communal harmony and peace was held at the Govt Dance College Hall, Palace Compound here today.

The five day long camp was being organised by Nehru Yuba Kendra Sangathan (NYKS) Manipur Zone, Imphal (Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Govt of India) and sponsored by Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Youth Development (RGNIYD), Sriperumbudur.

Speaking as guest of honour of the closing function, training officer cum lecturer SHANU division, RGNIYD Anbu Kavitha expressed her pleasure on the enthusiastic and colourful youths of Manipur.

RGNYID has special focus in Manipur and the programme of this kind will develop brotherhood feeling, peace, unity and harmony among the youths. Mary Kom made the whole country proud in the recent London Olympics. It is only the education that empowers both male and female. The children should learn English for their own development.

Chief guest of the function, L Tilotama, vice chairperson, Board of Governors, NYKS YAS, Govt of India expressed optimism that successful implementation of such camp will strengthen the brotherhood bond among the different communities. Youth is the deciding factor and their role in the society is very crucial and large.

The youths should be careful while casting their votes. They should know when, where and whom to vote to use their franchise right, she said.

In this era of internet one should make the decision by thinking carefully but not by emotion.

We will have a peaceful coexistence and integrity in our state if we can presume that we are the sons of one mother, she continued.

The participation in the camp and representing different cultures indicates that there is still a strong understanding among all the communities of the state. We should never encourage the politician who has the concern for only a section of the community, she added.

Giving her presidential address Zonal Director of NYKS Manipur Zone, Imphal Jackie Ruivah said communities in the state have been bonded closely since time immemorial and are inseparable.

One should know one’s culture and should respect others’ culture. The camp was enjoyed irrespective of religion, caste and creed, she continued.

Cultural performances representing different communities were showcased during the function. Certificates of participation were distributed to all the participants from different communities at the end of the closing function.

IMPHAL, December 7: All the 11 trade unions at national level irrespective of political differences met at the 40th Congress of All India Trade Union Congress, AITUC held from November 27-30 last in Mumbai.

The session took various resolutions regarding the labour issues.

Addressing media persons in a press conference held today at Irawat Bhawan, President of AITUC Manipur State Committee Dr M Nara Singh said the entire trade unions are united under the slogan “Fight the new economic policy of UPA-II”.

Common man and practically each one of us are affected by the new economic policy which only favours for the rich people, he said.

The 40th Congress of AITUC expressed its deep concern at the unbearable, unabated, unparalleled price rise particularly all round inflation of all essential commodities, he said.

The total collapse of the public distribution system, large scale hoarding, black marketing, forward trading and corporatisation of the whole society has made the working people suffer. It can be said that the government is now of the corporate, for the corporate and by the corporate, Nara continued.

He further said the corporate can select and appoint ministers of their choice. All policies are guided and dictated by them. Due to commercialisation and privatisation of the education and health services, common man are now finding difficulties to get medical treatment, and get education. Also due to privatisation of public utility services, common people could not have access to clean drinking water, sanitation facilities and electricity etc.

There are lakhs of posts vacant in the government sectors. Instead of employing people the finance department has ordered to abolish all those posts that have been remaining vacant for more than a year. AITUC has opposed this. The norms evolved by the 15th Indian Labour Conference and reiterated by 44th Session of ILC for fixing minimum wages have not been enforced by the government deliberately under the pressure of employers, he added.

Nara further said the AITUC demanded that contract labour should be regularize, the wide disparity in wages between regular employees and contract labour should be eliminated. The trade union called the contract system as the system of “Hire and fire”. The Foreign Direct Investment allowed by the UPA government in Multi-brand Retail Trade is opposed by the trade unions.

The 40th Congress has called upon all its units, its entire membership to plunge into mass action and as a beginning, organize Rail Roko and Rasta Roko agitation and take to law violation in multiple forms including street marches on December 18 and 19, 2012 with firm determination.

The Session also called upon the entire working class to unleash massive campaign in order to mobilize thousands of workers for march to parliament on December 20, 2012 and make two day strike on February 20 and 21, 2013 a grand success to shake the UPA government.

Nara appealed the people to join and support the nationwide agitations against the new economic policy of the UPA government. All the trade unions are urged to fight the new economic policy from the platform of AITUC. It will be a battle between common people versus the ruling party.

By Ananya S Guha
My first history lessons were drawn from a book by the name of “March of Times” when we were just in Class III. It was an exotic book dealing with ancient Rome and Greeks civilizations as well as a touch of British history. The cover of the book depicting the rise of empires and pictures of kings was something which attracted my senses immediately. History was certainly my first love. The rise and fall of Charlemagne, the stories of Romulus and Remus, the rivers the Tigris and the Euphrates were things which I would wallow my mind in.

And Mam taught us history. Mam with her portly figure and expressive eyes, Mam with her rich voice almost baritone, Mam with that strict look and Mam brandishing her cane ominously, these are all associated with the March of Times. Mam’s pedagogy was simple: to put it crudely and to use a cliche, commit and vomit. Sophisticated educators would call it learning by rote. Mam would ask us on the previous day to learn a chapter by hard and next day she would ask us, one by one to regurgitate the lessons. That was history for her, but for me that was also very exciting. I would like to repeat the lessons parrot like, and my mind roamed to an almost palpable and real past. Nothing was more fascinating  than the stories of Horatio, Alaric the Goth, the city of Rome and how it was founded, the Crusades, Helen of Troy, Homer’s Epics, Achilees etc. They charmed me into a mythic past where I would unravel so many civilizations. So, learning by rote was no problem for me. In fact, I delighted in it and laughed delirously to myself if someone got a spanking for not remembering. How could that be? Not remembering the past which added so much lustre to my life at least. Mam was visibly impressed by my acuity of memory as sharp as a razor’s edge, and she would suitably reward me with a toffee or smile benignly at me. Receiving a kind smile from her was a rarity.

The March of Times straddled not only the past but took me forward to a regenerative present and future. I would love to play roles of the king sitting on his throne and appoint some of my friends as his subjugates! Mam’s teaching of history did it all. I marched with the times. My wish fulfilment took the form of establishing kingdoms in the compound of my house with surrogate companions to act as my body guards or attendants! Perhaps the March of Times was my first loved book and treasure, and history seeped into my infantile imagination.

Three decades later Mam passed away. I did of course meet her after school occassionally when I revisited it, and she remembered me very well. But with her passing away the March of Times melted into memories.

New Delhi, Dec.7 (ANI): Hours and minutes after the UPA Government won a vote in the Rajya Sabha to allow foreign direct investment in multi-brand retail by a margin of 14 (123 versus 109), leaders of the ruling combine and the opposition engaged in a verbal political joust that could leave the general public bemused, if not confused.
While the opposition led by the BJP continued to criticize the government over foreign direct investment (FDI) in retail sector despite losing vote in both houses of parliament.
BJP leader Ravi Shankar Prasad said: “Wal-Mart has biggie back itself on the people, who claim to do politics of social justice. Wal-Mart has biggie back itself on the people, who clam to advocate the interest of poor, workers, Dalits (lowest caste) and marginalized.” Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) leader Sitaram Yechury said:”What has happened today is not democracy. It is victory what is called supremacy of the market in economic reform terms.” Trinamool Congress leader Vivek Gupta said: “This FDI would remain confine to one or two states and that itself is a major victory for us. We will deliberate how to oppose it. This will continue till national elections are held in 2013 or 2014.”
Janata Dal-United (JD-U) leader Shivanand Tiwari said: “It is against the interest of the country. This is the policy of the Congress Party. There is massive unemployment in the country. The government is unable to provide employment. It is not a country’s interest allow Wal-Mart, Tesco, Metro and in sector where a person could be self-employed by investing small capital. The county will not forgive them”
Allowing foreign supermarkets into the country is aimed at drawing more overseas investment and taming inflation. India ‘s retail market is reportedly worth about 450 billion dollars
The government had already won a vote on retail reform in the Lok Sabha two days earlier.
Although both votes were non-binding, defeat would have piled pressure on Prime MInister Manmohan Singh to roll back the measure.
Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kamal Nath, defending the government’s stand on the issue, said: “The BJP always makes this allegation and I would wish that they were better losers, they lost in the Lok Sabha, they have lost in the Rajya Sabha and they are making these allegations. This was a rejection of the politics of the BJP. I have said so from the beginning that this is nothing but politics, there was no issue of FDI because FDI has been left to the states and of there was anything left in this debate, it was pure politics. So, this is the rejection of the politics of BJP.”
