IMPHAL, January 4: Women Action for Development and other NGOs organized a candle lighting ceremony for justice, peace and development today at its office.

Speaking on the occasion, spokesperson Babina Salam said 2012 witnessed the most number of crimes committed on women in the state according to the WAD record.

Speaking further she said there were 302 incidents of crimes against women according to the record.

She continued that the function was organized in demand of action against all perpetrators of crimes against women and in the hope that the people of the state could live in peace and unity in the coming year.

The organizations have also demanded the strengthening of the state women commission, establishment of proper fast track courts in the state, establishment of a gender committee and reviving of the Manipur Human Rights Commission.
