IMPHAL, November 10: The 63-year old vegetable vendor Chandam Momon was killed without compassion by a young woman acquaintance to rob her gold earrings.

According to police reports, the accused Ningthoujam Thoinu alias Heinu alias Brajeshori, 23, daughter of Kumar of Napet Mamang Leikai struck Momon twice on the head with a knife with full force killing her on the spot. Thereafter, she relieved the victim of her gold earrings and sold them at a jewelry shop at Khwairamband temporary market shed.

The accused was paraded in front of media persons at the office chamber Hushne Jaman, the additional SP (Ops), Imphal East today.

The Addl SP said after getting specific information about the involvement of the person in the crime following the recovery of the murder weapon and a key on November 8 last, a team of district police rushed to Napetpalli Bazar today morning and arrested young woman.

He further stated that during the interrogation Thoinu admitted that she had killed Momon in the evening of November 6 with the intention of stealing the gold jewelry to pay off her debt.  

On the fateful day, Thoinu fetched Momom her meal from a hotel and they spent some time together in the latter’s rented room engaged in a conversation. When Momon mentioned about the value of his earrings during the conversation, it stirred up an evil desire in the young woman’s head to get possession of the valuables anyhow. She waited for the right opportunity to catch Momon off guard and pounced on her striking the lethal blows.     

After murdering the elderly woman she sold off the gold earrings at a shop located at the Khwairamban temporary market shed for Rs 6,700.

It may be mentioned that the partly decomposed body of Momom was discovered in her rented room at Napet Palli on November 8.
