Imphal, August 14: Bandh imposers along the Imphal-Ukhrul road imposing a bandh called by the Gwalatabi Transport-Yaingangpokpi Transport Association demanding a hike in fare from Rs 25 to 40 per head for passengers commuting in Tata Magic vehicles broke the front glass of a Tata Iris vehicle today.

The vehicle bearing the registration number MN06L 8436 was coming from Imphal. The front window of the vehicle was broken after its driver refused to return from the Sabungkhok area and attempted to drive towards the Yaingangpokpi area instead. The agitators reportedly chased the vehicle till the adjacent areas of Siejang and Sabungkhok and broke its front glass at around 8:10 am.

Later, the Lamlai Police picked up three agitators identified as Seram Bombom, 27, Huidrom Itobi, 33, and Sunil, 25, at around 9:30 am.

All the arrested are drivers and time keeper of the Association, according to one of the bandh imposers.

The passenger fare was decided on 2002 by a government gazette but we demanded a hike in passenger fares from 25 to 40 rupees in accordance with changing times and the changes in the prices of fuel and spared parts, a bandh imposer on the question of anonymity said.

The Association has around 60 Tata Magics in its disposal at the service of its passengers now, he added.

IMPHAL, August 14: The All Tribal Students’ Union of Manipur (ATSUM) will not allow any changes in the reservation quota of Scheduled Tribe (ST) students during admissions at the Manipur University (MU), ATSUM president Muan Tombing stated on Thursday.

Speaking to media persons at its Nagaram office, the ATSUM president said that the Central government has approved 31 percent reservations for ST students during admissions in MU two years ago but authorities have withheld the reservations by issuing a staying order on July 28.

MU professors have decided in a meeting held yesterday to keep the reservations for ST students at 7.5 percent instead of the stipulated 31 percent which is not in the interest of the tribal students of the State, he added.

ATSUM will fight tooth and nail for the rights of the tribal people particularly for the students, Tombing said adding that they will lodge a complaint to Union Human Resource Development ministry at the earliest.

The decision of the MU professors goes against the interests of the Tribals, so all the Tribals need to join hand in fighting for their rights particularly the students, the ATSUM president said.

He also stated that the State government should lift 144 CrPC and recall all the security forces deployed at Ukhrul if it seriously desires peace and harmony for all the people living in the State.

ATSUM has been observing the situation in Ukhrul for quite some time and it is about time for the Government to recall the additional security forces from the town apart from lifting 144 CrPC which has only created tension in the district, Tombing said.

Our Kangpokpi Correspondent adds: The All Manipur Tribal Students’ Union Manipur today warned of various agitations if the Central Educational Institution (Reservation in Admission) Amendment Act 2012 is not implemented in the current academic session.

ATSUM is shocked to learn that the Manipur University Administrative Council has decided to follow the Central Educational Institution (Reservation in Admission) Amendment Act 2012 from the academic session 2015 – 16 pointed out Emboi Serto before adding that the Act which was passed by an Act of Parliament is to be followed strictly.

There must be no excuses and grounds for postponing the implementation of the Amendment Act asserted Emboi.

He continued while noting that the very Amendment Act was sent to the Manipur University authority on September 25, 2012 while adding that Act should have been implemented during the 2013-14 session.

The tribal student apex body president further said that one academic year has been lost due to the bad intention of MU authority.

ATSUM has in 2007 objected to the 7.5 percent reservation as tribals constitute more than 40% and there was chaos for months and MU was burning while the ultimate outcome was IGNTU, Emboi added.

Let us not play with the Amendment Act which was passed by the Parliament, Emboi warned before adding that if MU authority insist on postponing the implementation of the Amendment Act, ATSUM will be compelled to take whatever means at its proposal.

He also called for government’s immediate intervention and see that the Central Educational Institution (Reservation in Admission) Amendment Act 2012 is followed from 2014-15 Academic session.

IMPHAL, August 14: The Joint Action Committee formed against the suspicious death of Leikangbam (n) Akoijam (o) Monica Devi, 17, wife of Akoijam Jiban Singh of Iroisemba blocked the Lamsang area.

Monika passed away at around1:30 am in the wee hours on August 8 at RIMS. Her dead body is still lying at the RIMS mortuary.

The JAC was formed today and it blocked all the roads in Lamsang area demanding the arrest of her husband and criminal proceeding against him.

The convenor of the JAC, S Shyamsunder Singh said that though they could bear testimony to the fact that Monica was badly treated by her husband and in-laws, her husband has not been punished till date.

Shyamsunder said that Lamphel Police Station’s Officer in Charge Doren and the Investigation Officer have however refused to register an FIR against Monika’s husband. He further lamented the RIMS authorities’ refusal to provide the post mortem report when it was first requested.

Members of the JAC maintained that Monica was killed by her husband and in-laws. Strictly demanding that her dead body must not be handed over to Monika’s husband, they also want the post mortem report to be handed over to them.

The JAC has also warned to intensify the agitation if their demands are not met.

IMPHAL, August 14: Four minors were found among 24 non-local labourers dropped early this morning by a Assam passenger bus bearing registration number AS 01 9777 at Thangmeiband College gate.

According to the JCILPS, students’ wing, following a tip-off, members and volunteers rushed to the spot and found the 24 trying to board auto-rickshaws.

The labourers were brought to the All Manipur Students’ Union office and on checking their credentials, the volunteers found four of them to be minors and many of them with invalid and fake ID-cards, student wing convenor Angamba said.

On further query they said they were recruited by Kolkata based Capital Company for manual work at the ongoing work site at Power Grid, Yulembam, Angamba said.

According to the convenor, the labourers identified themselves as coming from Malda town in West Bengal.

Meanwhile, a police team of the Imphal West led by OC Shanti Kumar Singh rushed to the AMSU campus and took away the labourers for transportation to Yurembam Power Grid.

He told the student volunteers that the labourers were there for developmental work of the State and should not be harassed in the name of the Inner Line Permit System.

The Yurembam Power Grid authority has also acknowledged the labourers as workforce meant for installation of power towers.

Meanwhile, the JCILPS, student wing has appealed to the State government to implement the ILPS in the State to safeguard the indigenous peoples.

Meanwhile, members of the Child Line also arrived to rescue the four juveniles but couldn’t do so, as the OC Imphal West had already whisked the labourers away.

IMPHAL, August 14: The Association of Manipuri Diaspora (AMAND), Pune and the Manipur Students’ Association Pune (MSAP) jointly paid homage to the gallant martyrs of Manipur who made the supreme sacrifice to protect their motherland from the colonial designs of British government, on August 13, the 123rd Patriots’ Day, at the Arihant Institute of Management Studies, Camp, Pune, said a AMAND press release.

It said, commemorating the sacrifices made during Anglo-Manipuri War in 1891 by the patriots of Manipur, a large number of Manipuris from the city paid their homage to Bir Tikendrajit, Thangal General and Paona Brajabasi.

(Retd) Major KY Singh, (retd) Captain NK Singh, Dr H Narendra Singh, senior scientist, IITM, government of India, N Giridhar Singh, senior scientist and joint director, DRDO, government of India, (Retd) WO TP Singh, professor Atish Chochordia, director, AIMS were among the dignitaries who paid floral tributes to the martyrs, said the press release.

M Anthony, president, MSAP said the observance of this proud moment of Patriots’ Day in this metro city not only reminds us of the relentless strength and valour of our forefathers but also modulates our courage to serve our motherland, while, Er N Giridhar Singh, joint secretary, AMAND, Pune emphasized the need for reassurance towards the welfare of the State as a mark of respect to the brave forefathers of the land.

A two-minutes silence was also observed as a mark of respect to the departed souls, said the press release.

IMPHAL, August 13: Post mortem conducted on the body of the 40 Assam Rifles havildar found dead inside his barrack yesterday, has revealed that his private parts had been severed.

Md Ahmed Ali, 34, s/o late Md Amzad Ali of Thoubal Phoudel Mayai Leikai (Hav. NO G-412217) was found dead suspiciously inside his barrack at the 40 AR transit camp, Minuthong yesterday around 1pm.

Post mortem was conducted today at the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences under full video coverage and in the presence of executive magistrate, as requested by the bereaved family.

The family had raised their suspicion on the circumstances surrounding his death.

It may be recalled that the bereaved family reported that bruise mark were found on his mark on his neck, wrist and leg.

The AR authority reportedly rushed him to Raj Medicity but he was declared brought death.

Meanwhile, reliable sources informed that the AR authority have identified four suspects behind the gruesome murder however the report is yet to be confirm with the authority maintaining their silence so far.

The sources further speculated that Ahmed might have been killed on the night of August 11 adding that the deceased was transferred from Dimapur three months back
