t should be obvious to all. Despite the sharp vigil maintained by voluntary organisations and the Joint Committee on Inner Line Permit System (JCILPS) at Sekmai along National Highway-2, non-locals continue to arrive at the State to pursue a living. This can easily be gauged from the number of such non-locals who have been detected and handed over to the police for not possessing necessary documents during the inspection drive conducted in the last few days.

Lilong is a sub-division on the northern periphery of Thoubal district. The population of administrative sub-division is around 43000 as per Census 2011. There are many small villages and Lilong is the biggest one among them. Lilong is divided into two: Chajing and Haoreibi. Chajing is inhabited by Meiteis, the dominant indigenous community of Manipur, and it comes under Langthabal Assembly Constituency. Haoreibi is inhabited by Pangals, a minor indigenous community of Manipur.
Haoeibi and few adjoining areas inhabited by Meiteis, Pangals and Kabui come under Lilong assembly constituency. Lilong constituency has a voter count of 28940 as per last updated report (2014) available with Election Commission of India. However, a cursory glance at the Census 2011 figures reveals that the population is less than 31000, which contradicts the voter count of the constituency. Pangals inhabit few other places of Manipur as well and are socio-culturally close to Meiteis, while religious affiliation is with Islam. Religious identity is Muslim.

Meitei meets Madrasi !

(contd from previous issue)
I truthfully repeated the same answer – Being the last LTC trip, I was determined to cover as many NE States as possible because NE States – particularly Nagaland, Mizoram, Manipur, Meghalaya – are quite unique by way of culture, language, tradition, cuisine, costume, religion, etc. Assam and Tripura have a trace of Bengali culture, while Arunachal Pradesh is (or at least Ita Nagar is), religion wise somewhat similar to Buddhist Sikkim where I had lived for 5 1/2 years and which we visited only in 2014. We had already decided upon Assam, mainly for Kaziranga and Majuli, the world’s biggest river island with the added attraction of its Vaishnavite Satra tradition.
