Human rights are moral principles or norms, which describe certain standards of human behaviour, and are regularly protected as legal rights in national and international law. They are commonly understood as inalienable fundamental rights “to which a person is inherently entitled simply because she or he is a human being,” and which are “inherent in all human beings” regardless of their nation, location, language, religion, ethnic origin or any other status. They are applicable everywhere and at every time in the sense of being universal, and they are egalitarian in the sense of being the same for everyone.
The Constitution of India provides for Fundamental rights, which include freedom of religion. Clauses also provide for freedom of speech, as well as separation of executive and judiciary and freedom of movement within the country and abroad. The country also has an independent judiciary and well as bodies to look into issues of human rights.

Every day is a New Year’s day

No two days are ever alike. Generally, a ‘day’ is considered as the period from sunrise to sunset, but universally 24 hours maketh a day. A day may be viewed from different perspectives i.e from the individual point of view, geographical, natural and from various other angles. Viewing from the personal level, a person may wake up with a headache, toothache or back pain which he had not encountered the previous day. A person who was alive and kicking may die the next day due to accident or other incident beyond his control as nobody can break the armour of fate.

A thought on current situation in Manipur

As the situation in Manipur time and again gravitates toward a civil war, now would be a good time to exercise my freedom of expression duly granted to each individual by the Constitution of India. People have been advised to keep shut if their opinions do not complement their kindred’s. No doubt I would be laughed off a simpleton as I had been previously condemned by some acquaintances cognizant of my views. History is witness, what is going on in Manipur is not unique to us. Yet we refuse to learn from history and choose to dwell in the past hurt and prejudices. Far from celebrate our diversity and evolve together as a society, we have let our deep rooted hate grow into a hydra-headed monster. We have tenaciously maintained the idea of “us” and “them”. Each group conscientiously nurtures its wound, while the leaders make sure it never heals. We keep a record of what harm “they” have done to “us”; never mindful of what “we” did to them. What could be the cause of this ever raging imbroglio in Manipur?

A major issue that recently bedevilled the nation is that of the agitations by the Patels/Patidars in Gujarat, the Marathas in Maharashtra and the Jats in Haryana and neighbouring states, demanding inclusion in the list of Socially and Educationally Backward Classes (SEdBCs) and provisions for reservation on that basis. This is in conflict with the Constitution.

The Anglo-Kuki War, 1917-1820 was an epoch-making event not only of the history of Manipur but also of modern Indian history. Recently it has become a subject of serious research among academicians and scholars of different disciplines. But what has been so far sidetracked is its national and international character. The very fact that Great Britain, the then mightiest colonial power, had taken three long years to suppress the movement shows that it was an anti-imperialistic liberation movement of great magnitude.

Had there been no demonetisation, we would have started discussing how to save income tax by now. But one cannot argue that demonetisation has marred all other discussions or debates, and rightfully so. But since we are at the trail-end of the process, I think it is time to discuss something else. This is the time of the year when you wind up the year and become ready to welcome another year. This is the time you should go for your yearly financial health check-up and understand where you stand, financially.

The BJP, Manipur Pradesh stands and shall continue to stand for a clean and corruption free governance. Service to mankind has always been considered as the supreme duty of the party. It is a fact that for the last 15 years Manipur has been whirling in the vortex of corruption due to the absence of “governance” much less an inefficient and insensitive governance. And in fact, this is the primary reason why this party has caught the minds of the people as the only alternative to the present ruling dispensation. As such has been the superlative deliverance of party in governance wherever the BJP is in power, the people of Manipur has with a lot of hope and expectations, put the BJP, Manipur Pradesh on a high pedestal. Such a position of the party cannot be pulled down by an election oriented “district formation” and “polarization of votes” on communal lines which is an Anti- Manipur policy and can only help in disintegrating the State.

My maiden sojourn of enchanting North East

Contd from previous issue
But I fully understood the words written over there as differences between Bengali and Assamese languages are negligible. But in Manipur, I could easily read what is written in banners, advertisements or hoardings thanks to the familiar script; but couldn’t decipher its meaning a bit as Bengali and Manipuri languages are absolutely alien to each other! What a Himalayan contrast despite absolute similarities!

New Year message for 2017

A year and time is made of second, minute, hour, day, month and year. Except a baby child, we all know how old we are. At the time we were young, we did not think that we would become old and die. As time passed by, many of our grand pa, ma, dad and mom — important and noted people have died. All the people of the earth must die someday unless the end of the earth (world) or the second coming of Lord Jesus occurs soon.

The Hill-Valley divide widens again

The ugly face of ethnic Nationalism has risen again to bare its fangs and spew venom, one crying foul against the other. Unity in diversity could be the beauty of the state depending on what attitude we have.

My maiden sojourn of enchanting North-east

It was the year 1989. One fine morning, my father announced that we are going to visit the North-East during Durga Puja holidays! Oh my joy knew no bounds! As my father was attached to Central Government, he used to avail Leave Travel Concession to tour various parts of India. We had been to Northern and Western India number of times. But yet to visit Southern and North-Eastern part of the country. But I didn’t have any craving for South India. Since many close friends and relatives had visited the South of the Vindhyas and there exist no dearth of magazines, articles or photographs highlighting the Charminar, Kanyakumari, Kovalam Beach or Mysore Palace; that region didn’t hold any special appeal for me. But North-East remained in another plain — filled with mystery and unknown.
