Mushrooms for nutrition and health

With the changing food habit and consumer preferences towards nutritious food, the edible mushrooms are gaining immense popularity. Mushrooms are considered to be the highest producer of protein per unit area and time and are an excellent source of vitamins and minerals too. Mushrooms are rich in quality proteins, vitamins B complex (thiamine, riboflavin and niacin) including Folic acid, vitamin B-12, vitamin C (ascorbic acid) and fibre. Superior quality proteins (12-35% crude protein content) of mushrooms contain most of the essential amino acids in good quantity (lysine, tryptophan, leucine, isoleucine, valine, threonine, tyrosine and phenylalanine) that the body cannot synthesize on its own. As a low calorie high protein item with negligible starch and sugars, they are ‘the delight of the diabetic’.

A trip to Indira Point: Down memory lane, 37 years back

A cute shell and a handful of beach sand in a glass jar occupy the pride of place in my showcase. Once a happy reminder of my dream visit to Indira Point, the Southernmost Tip of Indian soil, now they remind me of the devastating Tsunami of December 26, 2004; that tsunami has not only devoured that Land’s Tip but also the lives of the men and members of their families (in all 20) who were looking after the lighthouse there, besides a group of international scientists on a research visit. I shudder even to imagine that the very place where I stood admiring sunset and sunrise is now under 4.5 metres (almost 15 ft.) of water!

Rising to the occasion

Chief minister Okram Ibobi Singh has literally pulled the rug from under the feet of the Manipur-based United Naga Council. UNC has imposed an economic blockade of two national highways from 1 November as a mark of protest over the proposal to create the Kuki-dominated Sadar Hills out of Senapati district — a stronghold of the National Socialist Council of Nagaland (Isak-Muivah) and the UNC.

From Garribi Hatao to Bandh Hatao! Manipur, Sanaleibak (Land of Jewels) and also fondly called the Switzerland of the East by the 1st Prime Minister of India, Late Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, has, of late, become famous for many wrong reasons and one of them is bandhs and strikes. Nowadays Manipur is more popularly known as the land of bandhs. Over the years this bandh culture has destroyed economic, social and political aspects of the life of the people of Manipur. We are all familiar with the terms like lightning bandh, dawn to dusk bandh, 12 hours, 24, 36, 100 hrs, 100 days bandh, economic blockade, counter economic blockade, bandh supporters bandh, anti band supporters bandh etc. We are very confident that Manipur is unofficial Guinness World Record Holder as far as Bandhs and Strikes are concerned.

— Book review — Our world through the prism of Parag Khanna’s Connectography

Connectography is compiled of world vast information, out of which this writing is merely a part of what I understand. Reading and studying Connectography by Parag Khanna has opened my eyes to a wider understanding of History, Politics, Geography, Economics and the essential need for connectivity—seeking not in terms of self-benefits and self-interests but of meeting other people’s needs, the duty of loving thy neighbour. Could not help but contrast this with the state of affairs in our beloved state of Manipur where we have held on to our divisions, creating bigger and bigger chasm that separate us further and further.

The “concern” of the BJP national leaders for the welfare of Manipur is really touching. For over one month Narendra Modi and those trouble shooters who kept on coming to Manipur closed their eyes and ears to the trials and tribulations of the people who floundered due to the UNC blockade against the State. Modi was jolted to wakefulness when Chaoba and others drew his attention to the illegal blockade. Still he kept on fumbling.

Kaladan: A sea gate for India’s Northeast!

Kaladan corridor as an important component of Act East policy is poised to link India’s North-East with the Southeast Asia through multi modal transit system based on road, river and sea ways. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has also described North-East as Natural Economic Zone (NEZ) and has focused upon the region’s development through cross country economic corridors. In this context, the Kaladan multimodal Transit Transport (KMTT) corridor could be developed as a potential sea gate for the Northeast.

Meitei-Naga relationship

God created Meitei and Naga to co-exist. This coexistence is to continue till the end of the world. Now the question is, “Shall we fight one another till the end of the world?”. Please, let us look up to the will and wishes of our Almighty God, the Creator of Meitei and Naga. God never likes His children to fight against one another but He likes Meitei and Naga to love one another, to help one another, to support one another and to live in a peaceful co-existence.

Get masked if going to Delhi

Every breath you take in Delhi is a ‘deadlier’ intake, because the air quality in the capital city has now attained the worst ever level in 17 years. Situation got worsen in the week after Diwali when the average air pollution level was 40 times higher than the guidelines recommended by the World Health Organisation, which is 900 micrograms per cubic metre of PM (particle pollution) defined by a mixture of air-borne toxic elements. And the fear is that no proper measures have yet taken up from any quarter by either the Modi or Kejriwal governments, because both are now busy locking horns each other over demonetisation.

Benefits of demonetization

As far as the demonetization is concerned it has the moral high ground because this is an attempt to blast the black money, castrate corruption, kill counterfeit money and of course beget a cashless economy for more accountability & transparency. Fighting a war against the evils will certainly cause some collateral damages and people will understand it. If they don’t what can be done?

Due to poverty people search for better livelihood opportunity and one word that comes to our mind in this regard is migration. Though this may be in a legal way or illegal way migration has been there since ages. People from poor country try to move out to other countries in search of better opportunity and there are always controversies related to illegal migration.

The love of God—Are you ready for Christmas?

“For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believes in Him shall not perish but have everlasting life. For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn it, but that the world through Him might be saved.” (John 3: 16, 17)
God’s sacrificial love is for the whole world and the human beings in it. “The earth is the Lord’s and all its fullness- the world and those who dwell therein” (Psalms 24:1). Satan, the evil one is still trying to destroy the world and all those who dwell therein by any possible means, morally and spiritually. And is even trying to destroy God’s love towards us. The evil one has many different designs to distort the words of God, “so loved the world”, but will not succeed. These evil designs are basically hating one another. Many people hate each other. Jesus Christ said, “And because lawlessness will abound, the love of many will grow cold” (Matthew 24:12). Yes, it is true in this world, especially in a tiny state like Manipur. We know that Manipur is inhabited by different tribes, caste and creed.

Himalayas the great—my paradise

Himalayas form one of the longest chain of mountains in the world which runs all along the border of Northern India — right from Jammu and Kashmir in the West to Arunachal Pradesh in the East. Not to forget its dominance in Nepal, Bhutan and China’s Tibetan autonomous region as well. That the Himalayas get described as “Great” is not a bit of exaggeration — lush green hills, snow-capped peaks, gurgling rivers, energetic streams, chilly winds, snowy passes, religious sites, beautiful monasteries reflecting unique Buddhist architecture, diverse wildlife, colourful flowers and rare orchids bring out the best of the mountains.
