Manipur is in turmoil. This is largely because of the govt. of the day. In democracy the elected govt. is mandated to work for the welfare of its people. It should be a govt. of the people, by the people, for the people. It may be a govt. of the people constituted by their elected representatives. But, it may not necessarily be a govt. for the people. For it to be so it should work in close liaison with the people learning their aspirations, desires, needs, joys, fears, desperations, sufferings and pangs. Its primary duty should be to endeavour to take the people to a higher level of a fulfilled life with security for themselves and their posterity.

India’s gift to the world

What is needed most in a world in turmoil and divided along religious lines especially like ours is today?
That would be unifying principles that go beyond religions and teach acceptance of all paths that lead to the ultimate goal of knowledge of Divine Reality, or God.

Hard work will make your life ‘really hard’

You give up today because you are afraid of tomorrow; you never know ‘day after tomorrow’ is the day you have been waiting for. Your life becomes boring because you keep doing the same thing as you really are afraid of new failures.
Every morning you wake up thinking what will people say? You bought a car not because you need it but just because your neighbour washes their car every morning. You no longer accept the selfie without editor, and then the question comes, “Are you enjoying the lively death?”

This syrup will protect your liver from the ill- effects of alcohol (many have died of liver cirrhosis while continuing with the same medication). This car is as fast as the wind (speed of wind not mentioned). The only pure cow ghee in the country (where cow milk is hardly available). The cream which will make you white in three months (nobody complains because of the stigma attached to the user). The herbal drink which will protract aging (not proven). Tea that will certainly slim you down; the same tea is prescribed to gain weight. The only toothpaste which will guard your teeth (no guarantee for shrinking gum). The capsule which will make you behave like a man ( meaning you normally behave like a female). Have this drink and you will live as long as you can (that means you will have a natural death).

If prevention is better than cure, we must rethink the way we look at cleaners and their job profiles. Lack of cleanliness at home, school, office, market and park are things we have learned to ignore as our way of living. Cleanliness and diseases are inimical relatives. To put it straight, cleanliness is a major barrier to outbreak and spread of diseases. We all know this.

Let’s fight Human Trafficking

One of the worst forms of violence against human being is human trafficking. It is a crime around the world though some countries have more problem and some have less problem. It affects every country of the world, as countries of origin, transit or destination – or even a combination of all. Trafficking often occurs from less developed countries to more developed countries, where people are rendered vulnerable to trafficking by virtue of poverty, conflict or other conditions.

The stance of Iron Lady of Manipur – a pyrrhic victory

After sixteen plus years of fast in protest against the dreaded spine-chilling Malom Massacre on Nov 2, 2000 where 10 innocent lives were mowed down by Assam Rifles personnel, it seems, Irom Sharmila Chanu, the Iron Lady of Manipur has gone butter startling everyone in Manipur and the world with her sudden revelation that she’d discontinue her fast. Nobody expected that after all those years of fast, she’d make such a rowdy decision, a decision to enter politics as her platform to fight against AFSPA, 1958 and make her dreams come true.

Meitei meets Madrasi !

(contd from previous issue)
‘Wow!” he exclaimed tasting the gunpowder. He had a hearty laugh when we explained the nick name of gunpowder given to the idly powder. We in our house generally do not use much spice (chilly), hence our gunpowder may not qualify to be actually called so, we explained. Idly powder is available readymade in the shops. We have to only mix oil with it and it is ready, we gave tips to make his dosai taste better. The chutney my wife had prepared was not the usual coconut chutney served in hotels; as it tasted different, Mr. Reagan Singh like it much. As a finale, we offered coffee, but he said he was full.

Basket with a hole
The food basket of Manipur is losing its content through a hole at the bottom. The farmers are no more interested in farming. They have lost confidence in farming as a source of livelihood. Farmland has been sold off to businessmen who construct brick and mortar structures and claim the land for commercial activities. Though Manipur Conservation of Paddy Land and Wetland act 2014 caps diversion of paddy land for construction of houses (but not for commercial activities) of the land owners to 0.2 acre in a Panchayat area or 0.1 acre in a Municipal area, there is rampant violation, if the mushrooming schools, shops and other structures are any indications. Such diversions disturb the ecology of the soil in the proximity.

Lilong is a sub-division on the northern periphery of Thoubal district. The population of administrative sub-division is around 43000 as per Census 2011. There are many small villages and Lilong is the biggest one among them. Lilong is divided into two: Chajing and Haoreibi. Chajing is inhabited by Meiteis, the dominant indigenous community of Manipur, and it comes under Langthabal Assembly Constituency. Haoreibi is inhabited by Pangals, a minor indigenous community of Manipur.
Haoeibi and few adjoining areas inhabited by Meiteis, Pangals and Kabui come under Lilong assembly constituency. Lilong constituency has a voter count of 28940 as per last updated report (2014) available with Election Commission of India. However, a cursory glance at the Census 2011 figures reveals that the population is less than 31000, which contradicts the voter count of the constituency. Pangals inhabit few other places of Manipur as well and are socio-culturally close to Meiteis, while religious affiliation is with Islam. Religious identity is Muslim.

Meitei meets Madrasi !

(contd from previous issue)
I truthfully repeated the same answer – Being the last LTC trip, I was determined to cover as many NE States as possible because NE States – particularly Nagaland, Mizoram, Manipur, Meghalaya – are quite unique by way of culture, language, tradition, cuisine, costume, religion, etc. Assam and Tripura have a trace of Bengali culture, while Arunachal Pradesh is (or at least Ita Nagar is), religion wise somewhat similar to Buddhist Sikkim where I had lived for 5 1/2 years and which we visited only in 2014. We had already decided upon Assam, mainly for Kaziranga and Majuli, the world’s biggest river island with the added attraction of its Vaishnavite Satra tradition.

Meitei meets Madrasi !

Idly & sambar! Dosai & chutney! And, yes, gunpowder! How could I, a Madrasi, invite a Meitei to my home without at least this basic & popular South Indian menu? Idly-sambar and dosai-chutney combinations are as inseparable as Romeo-Juliet and Laila-Majnu. But, of all the things, how does gunpowder fit in this menu?! Well, gunpowder is nothing but the nickname given by the British to the idly powder. Idly powder is just another side dish like sambar or chutney to go along with idly, uppuma (kichadi), and dosai. And, yes, it is dosai, not dosa; don’t miss the ‘i’ and don’t miss the dot either. The so-called gunpowder’s main ingredient is hot red dried chilly; mix the gunpowder with gingerly (sesame) oil and it is ready in a jiffy as a tasty, spicy side dish!

Costly words (Please, Sorry, Thanks)

(Contd from previous issue)
“The third word is ‘sorry’. It is a difficult word, certainly, yet so necessary. When it is lacking, small cracks widen – even unintentionally – to become deep trenches. It is not by chance that in the prayer Jesus taught us, the Our Father, which summarizes all the key questions for our lives, we find this expression: “Forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us”. Recognition of having erred, and willingness to give back what has been taken away – respect, honesty, love – makes us worthy of forgiveness. This stops infection.
