Imphal, June 7: ‘Friendship Cup’ Football Tournament being conducted at Kangpokpi village, Senapati district under the aegis of Red Shield Division, came to a spectacular end today with the winning team-’Saikul Club’ beating ‘KYU Club’. A total of 10 teams belonging to Kuki, Naga and Nepali communities participated in the event which was conducted from 29 May to 07 Jun 2012. The event was conducted, in collaboration with the Sadar Hills District Sports Association to hunt local talent in the remote villages of the region.
The venue for the event was the ‘Thomas Ground’ at Kangpokpi named after Brigadier Thomas, who was an ardent sports enthusiast and a strong promoter of local talent. Major General Binoy Poonnen, VSM, General Officer Commanding (GOC) of Red Shield Division was the Chief Guest for the closing ceremony.
The GOC then distributed prizes to the winners and the runners-up amidst great cheers and festivities within the crowd. Major General Poonnen, VSM congratulated the victorious team for their fine performance and encouraged the runners-up to work harder for the next event.
In his closing address, he emphasized on the importance of sports in building a strong nation and appreciated the youth for the talent displayed by them. The GOC also appreciated the efforts of the organisers and the troops of the armed forces who worked shoulder-to-shoulder to make the event a grand success.
