COPTAM to resume stir

Imphal, June 20 NNN: The Committee on Protection of Tribal Areas, Manipur (COPTAM) has on Wednesday decided to resume its agitation very soon to put pressure on the state government to fulfill its ‘rightful and legitimate demands’. Imphal, June 20 NNN: The Committee on Protection of Tribal Areas, Manipur (COPTAM) has on Wednesday decided to resume its agitation very soon to put pressure on the state government to fulfill its ‘rightful and legitimate demands’.
A meeting of the COPTAM Central Committee was held on June 16 during which the government was condemned for neglecting the plight of the tribal people, the tribal civil body said in a statement signed by its secretary, Thangkham Lupheng.
It said COPTAM had decided to suspend its agitation after its leaders met with the Chief Minister at his office chamber last year hoping that the Chief Minister would keep his assurance.
But nothing has been done so far despite the assurances given by the Chief Minister to COPTAM, the statement said, adding that the Chief Minister has failed to redress the grievances of the tribal people till date.
COPTAM also denounces the state government for failing to respond to the letter sent by National Commission for Scheduled Tribes on the issues raised by it, the statement added. The state government is deliberately undermining and neglecting the queries made by a constitutionally instituted Commission, it alleged and said that the act of the government amounts to contempt of the Indian Constitution.
In view of the indifferent attitude of the state government to its rightful and genuine demands, COPTAM is constrained to resume its agitation sooner or later after seeking support from the civil apex body and student organizations, it threatened.
COPTAM also said it appeals to the people of the state not to get the wrong impression when it takes up the agitation again, seeking cooperation and support from all concerned in its effort to fulfill its legitimate demands.

Imphal, June 20 MNS NNN : The All Manipur Women’s Social Reformation and Development Samaj (AMWSRDS) Wednesday staged a sit-in protest against the state government’s apathy toward its demand for a piece of land for construction of its office building at Palace Compound in Imphal.

The AMWSRDS was set up back in 1975 and registered under Society Registered Act in 1978 with registration number 2441, Sobita, organizing secretary of AMWRSDS told newspersons at Sanjenthong footpath where the demonstration took place.
A makeshift office was later constructed at a small piece of land close to the Palace after paying the required money to the then titular king of Manipur Okendro, she added.
However, on September 23, 2004, the then government led by the incumbent Chief Minister O Ibobi and Art and Culture Minister, Parijat evicted the said office building and confiscated it for construction of Cultural Complex there, she informed.
She said AMWSRDS in collaboration with its branch members have decided to launch various democratic forms of agitations with support of the public to press its demand to the government.
“If the government fails to meet its long pending demand within July 20, the women society will take up various agitations over the issue,” Sobita threatened.
She also appealed to the Chief Minister to bring an amicable solution on the issue at the earliest possible.

NPO appeals to use NH 2

Imphal, June 20 NNN: The Naga People’s Organisation (NPO) has accused the state government of using some NGO to serves its purpose. Imphal, June 20 NNN: The Naga People’s Organisation (NPO) has accused the state government of using some NGO to serves its purpose.
The NPO, the apex body of Naga tribes in Senapati disatrict said the decision of the Tansporters and Drivers Council (TDC) not to lift goods from godowns in Imphal in protest against the recent notification issued by FCI general secretary at Dimapur that 80 per cent of FCI goods from outside the state should be transported along the Imphal-Dimapur road, also called NH-2 (formerly NH-39) while 20 per cent through the Imphal-Jiribam road, also known as NH-37 (formerly NH-53).
With certain organisations supporting of TDC’s stand not to ply on NH-2 for unloading of FCS due to the alleged problems faced along the NH-2 by the transporters, the Naga People’s Organization (NPO) questioned the motives of the TDC and its relevance of their ‘unrealistic’ decisions. “The all out support of the present State Government extended to TDC’s demand rather than safeguarding and developing the lifeline of the state NH-2 is ‘unfortunate and disturbing’. Sidelining the importance of equally developing the State highways and instigating communal lines of policies through valley based NGOs by the State Government will not be tolerated. The NPO demands the TDC to be clear and honest on the matter rather than pointing fingers only on blockades and taxations along the NH-2 which is also a regular happening even in the valley and NH-37,” the Naga body said.
With the inaugurated railway project at Karong finally diverted at the wimps and fancy of the majority community ruled Manipur Government, the collaborative designs of the Government machineries and TDC to again divert funds and development of NH-2 to NH-37 is questionable, said the NPO. The NPO questions the integrity of the TDC that has campaign for developing only NH-37 since 2010 while transporting all essential goods through NH-2 which is in deplorable and deteriorating state of condition. Such immature move of the TDC to play blame-game on the NH-2’s taxes, insecurity and blockade rather than pointing its finger at the weakness of the State Government will only invite communal divide among the people rather than solving the crisis.
The NPO appealed before the intellectual/think tank to study and express their wisdom on the present situation created by the State Government through NGO’s like TDC and others, so as to bridge better communication among the different communities of the state. It is not against the development of an alternate route like NH-37 .

NCP accepts Sangma’s resignation

New Delhi, June 20 (ANI): The Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) has finally bowed down to the compulsions of coalition dharma and accepted former Lok Sabha speaker P.A. Sangma’s resignation. New Delhi, June 20 (ANI): The Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) has finally bowed down to the compulsions of coalition dharma and accepted former Lok Sabha speaker P.A. Sangma’s resignation.
NCP chief Sharad Pawar earlier today said he would accept Sangma’s resignation with immediate effect, of offered.
“We will accept it immediately. If he is resigning from the primary membership, we will inform the Speaker of the Meghalaya Assembly also (that) he is not member of the NCP and we accept it,” said Pawar.
Sangma, who is determined to contest the presidential poll as a candidate of the Tribal Forum of India, quit NCP on the ground that his self-respect should be protected.
Briefing the media here about Sangma’s decision, Janata Party chief Subramanian Swamy said: “”Sangma, who is an old friend of mine called me up today. Sangma telephoned me saying that I must see you. I said
I am going that side, so I will drop in at 2: 30. When I came here, he said ‘the NCP seems to be in some kind of torture from somebody or other. I know from where the torture is, and therefore, I am making it easy for them by resigning’.”
“Now, he is a gentleman he did not say, but the fact is that NCP and the Congress Party have tried to humiliate him, saying that he is not of the same stature as Pranab Mukherjee. And, they want to humiliate him by saying that they are offering him the Ambassadorship to Mauritius. So, the low quality of UPA is reflective of the lack of education of Sonia Gandhi,” he added.
Swamy further said Sangma is the first choice for the coveted post of President of India of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa and Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, and added that the decision of the NDA to also back him in the race of Raisina Hill, would eventually be announced by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) veteran Lal Krishna Advani or Janata Dal-United (JD-U) chief Sharad Yadav.
“Sangma is a candidate for president of Jayalalithaa and Naveen Patnaik. And the question now only remains whether the NDA is backing him also. That final decision is being taken today in Advaniji’s house,” said Swamy.
“I can say the consensus is in favour of supporting Jayalalithaa’s and Naveen Patnaik’s candidate, and that officially and authoritatively only Advaniji can make the announcement, or Sharad Yadav can make that announcement,” he added.
Sangma had earlier on Sunday reiterated that he was still in the fray for the presidential poll as a tribal candidate, and said that he would appeal to his party boss Sharad Pawar to back him in the race for Raisina Hill.
“I have maintained right from the beginning that I am a candidate of the Tribal Forum of India, which is nothing to do with any political party. I am a candidate of the Tribal Forum of India. And, as a candidate of the Tribal Forum of India, I have gone across to all political parties appealing for support. This is the position. Therefore, it is very clear that I am not an NCP candidate,” said Sangma.
“Sharad Pawar is saying that he will appeal to me to withdraw. And I can tell you, I will appeal to him to support me,” he added.
Highway protection not the solution : PREPAK
MNS: The PREPAK Progressive today said highway protection as mooted by Chief Minister O Ibobi, Home Minister Gaikhangam will not solve the problems people face on the highways. The highway is blocked repeatedly and a long term policy is required.
The extortions carried out on the highways are by organisations which are holding talks with the centre and state government it pointed out. Centre is responsible for frequent blockades in hill areas as it is deliberately not developing the region and allowing disparity it charged.
There will be never ending list of security personnel, VDF, IRB, Police and opening highway protection force will not serve any purpose said a statement issued by Boby Mangang , Deptt of Pub and Pro, PREPAK (PRO). People were appealed to provide assistance to the organisation.

There is an information vacuum in the state. Clarifications issued by officials do not even try to answer the queries people pose. Some ready made information is given to all which does not do any good or serve any purpose. We need a strong advocacy programme by the various departments to make people aware of their activities and to iron out differences. Gap between the departments and the people are increasing and the government may become a stranger in its own land. We need a strong information policy which can only be done by professionals. The engineering departments are headed by engineers, lawyers become judges but unfortunately in our state the DIPR is not headed by professionals. The task of the Directorate of Information and Public Relations is not to argue and find faults of the people but to strengthen the relations between the people and the government. Information officials earlier were personnaly to all media houses, general masses but now it is not functioning as it used to earlier. We have to understand that information and too correct information should be given to the masses. Let us take an example which people can understand. Strong public campaigns need to be organized by health advocates to educate people about the dangers of sugary beverages and the misleading corporate social responsibility campaigns that distract attention from the risks that their products pose.In a Policy Forum article, the authors (media and public health experts from the Berkeley and Boston, USA) examined prominent campaigns from industry leaders PepsiCo and Coca-Cola, that, according to the authors, have embraced corporate social responsibility (CSR) with elaborate, expensive, and multinational campaigns. The authors have said that while soda companies may not face the level of social stigmatization or regulatory pressure that now confronts Big Tobacco, concern over soda and the obesity epidemic is growing. In response to health concerns about their products, the authors argued that soda companies have launched comprehensive CSR initiatives sooner than did tobacco companies but that these campaigns echo the tobacco industry’s use of CSR as a means to focus responsibility on consumers rather than the corporation, bolster the companies’ and products’ popularity, and to prevent regulation. However, unlike tobacco CSR campaigns, soda company CSR campaigns explicitly target young people and aim to increase sales. The authors said it was clear that the soda CSR campaigns strengthen the idea that obesity is caused by “bad” behavior of customers, thereby diverting attention from soda’s contribution to increasing obesity rates.“For example, CSR campaigns that include the construction and upgrading of parks for youth who are at risk for diet-related illnesses keep the focus on physical activity, rather than on unhealthful foods and
drinks. Such tactics redirect the responsibility for health outcomes from corporations onto its consumers, and externalize the negative effects of increased obesity to the public,” the authors said.“Emerging science on the addictiveness of sugar, especially when combined with the known addictive properties of caffeine found in many sugary beverages, should further heighten awareness of the product’s public health threat similar to the understanding about the addictiveness of tobacco products. We should monitor public mood and help DIPR officials to be more productive and perform well.
