Imphal, July 4 : In an initiative towards a “GO GREEN FORTNIGHT”, HQ 9 Sector under the aegis of HQ IGAR(S) organized a plantation drive on 04th July 12, furthering its efforts of preserving the bounty of the nature, at Keithalmanbi. Brig Navneet Kumar, Cdr 9 Sect AR graced the occasion and inaugurated the drive by planting the first sapling. He also emphasized upon benefits of green environment and ill effects of global warming. A total of 10,000 saplings including Ornamental trees, Shady trees and Fruits trees are planned to be planted at Keithalmanbi, Mayang Imphal, Tulihal, Kakching, Waikhong, Thoubal, Yairipok and Mantripukhri during the ‘GO GREEN FORTNIGHT’ from 01 July to 04 July 2012 at various villages namely Heirok, Chandrakhong, Soura, Langgol, Wangoi, Patsoi, Lamlai, Khongampat, Hangam Thabi. The Go Green drive aims to save and regenerate the flora of the state, since the valley areas include Imphal East, West, Bishnupur and Thoubal District areas have undergone deforestation in the past.The Sector pledged to plant Maximum saplings of all types during this drive and also to conduct a series of lectures and presentations to include, “Importance of Trees in Our Lives”, essay writing competitions etc to bring home the important aspect of giving back to the “Mother Nature”.The Sector also plans to raise awareness among the local populace with a special focus on the younger generation to imbibe the importance of trees in their lives.
In another occasion, 28 Assam Rifles of 9 Sector under HQ IGAR(S) organised plantation drive under ‘Go Green Fortnight’ programme in the Kethelmanbi garrison on 04 Jul 2012. The programme was organized in view of undeterred efforts to preserve the bounty of the nature. More than 500 fruit bearing trees were planted in the Keithelmanbi garrison during the program. The drive was carried out under the theme of ‘‘Go Green Fortnight to instill the love for nature among local populace and also enhancement of arboriculture in the Keithelmanbi garrison for nearby villagers”.
Similarly, 18 SIKH organized a “Trees Plantation Drive” at the sprawling green areas of Yurembam. Plantation drive which included plantation of saplings of fruit bearing trees/plants like Guava, Papaya and Banana by the troops and villagers. A large number of villagers enthusiastically participated in the “GO GREEN” programme. The unit also, distributed insect repellent creams as an anti-malaria precaution to the villagers.
Mean while, 15 Assam Rifles organized “go green awareness essay competition” in STNBA School, New Irong on 03 Jul 2012. Topic of the essay competition was “GREEN EARTH”. More than two hundred students participated in this event. First, Second and Third Prizes were given to the participants gifts and sweets were distributed amongst the student.
