Imphal, July 5 : Maj Gen UK Gurung, YSM, IGAR (S) unveiled and inaugurated Pallel War memorial. Standing tall in Pallel of Chandel district yesterday, the war memorial is a mute testimony to the fighting prowess of the Assam Rifles and recognition for all brave warriors who sacrificed their lives while serving to protect the human rights, peace and tranquility for the people of Chandel district. The thump of the bigul marked the start of the ceremony and was followed by laying wreath by Maj Gen UK Gurung, YSM, IGAR (S).
HQ 26 Sector Assam Rifles undertook the campaign to GO GREEN over a fortnight to spread the message of afforestation throughout Chandel District yesterday. The function was inaugurated by Maj Gen UK Gurung. This drive will spread to Tengnoupal, Moreh, Shejang, Sajik Tampak, Moltuk, Sita, Joupi and Old Samtal to create awareness amongst the people of Chandel district over the period of 15 days.
Under this movement around 10,000 plants of ornamental, fruit bearing and medicinal varieties will be planted across Chandel district. Gen UK Gurung, YSM, IGAR(S) addressed the Assam Rifles Junior High School, Pallel and educated the children and parents expressing concern about the climatic change in the Chandel district due to deforestation and motivated them to preserve the biodiversity of Manipur. To encourage the students in co-curricular activities he gave away prizes to the children for excelling in GO GREEN Drive based Drawing, Painting and Poem Recitation competition and presented sports items to school.
In another occasion,27 Assam Rifles organised a ‘Plantation Drive’ under PARTNER’S (Partnership of Assam Rifles Towards North East Regional Students) Programme on 05 July 2012 to furthering its undeterred efforts of preserving the bounty of the nature. A lecture on “Importance of Trees in Our Lives” was also conducted on the occasion. A total of 230 saplings were planted at Thounaojam Village,Thoubal District.
