IMPHAL, April 25: Two labourers engaged in cleaning a part of the sewage project along the sewage hole located at North AOC near Kekrupat died today.

The two identified as Elangbam Ranjit, 45, son of (L) Birchandra and Elangbam Indra, 35, son of Tomba both hailing from Wangjing Tentha Mayai Leikai in Thoubal district reportedly went down the man hole to clean the sewage tunnel around 7.30 am today.

According to the police, both of the deceased were hired by a contractor for the cleaning of the sewage hole and may have possibly died due to suffocation or inhaling poisonous gas inside.

Both labourers reportedly died on the spot.

Personnel of Imphal Fire Service went down into the underground pipe after the duo failed to climb up for several hours and they found that both had died inside.

The dead bodies have been picked up by a team from Imphal police station and deposited at the Regional Institute of Medical science for post mortem.
