IMPHAL, November 13: The Communist Party of India, (CPI), Manipur State Council has urged political parties, civil societies and the public to join hands with the party in safeguarding the Indo-Myanmar boundary and land of Manipur.

The CPI, Manipur in their press release claimed that the party has been unceasingly supporting the state’s causes from the past.

Regarding the Indo-Myamnar border issues, representatives of women groups had visited the border on August 18, the womenfolk being a part of the party’s mass front. A group of around 32 representatives from the party had also inspected the border on September 16.

Party leader and MP of Rajya Sabha, Dr. Raja had also brought up the border issues in the Parliament sitting on August 30 and urged the concerned ministers to bring an amicable solution to the problem in a short time, the press note of CPI further claimed.

A sit-in-protest of many parties of the state was organized at Keishampat on September 23 regarding the border issues where many resolutions were taken. State Secretary of CPI, Dr. Nara had at the occasion, urged the government to call an all party meeting to discuss and bring an end to the situation. As a result, an all party meeting was held on October 10 where a drafting committee was formed to design a memorandum and a team consisting of representatives from all the parties had also inspected the Indo-Myanmar border on October 22. The committee had then agreed to form an Indo-Myanmar “Joint Working Committee” to look into the issue and had decided oppose the border fencing works, said the release.

The CPI said that the party has always strived to maintain the image of the state in unity. It can be remembered that on September 21, 1948, founder of CPI, Jananeta Irabot was declared an underground activist. Opposing the notion, the party had from then worked towards safeguarding the state’s territorial integrity.

The unfortunate June 18 incident in Manipur which cost the loss of several lives has been remembered every year by the people and it has resulted from the Bangkok Declaration made on June 14, 2001 between NDA government and NSCN (IM). At that time, the party’s general secretary A. B. Bhardan had strongly urged the central government to take the right needful step, the press note said.

Again, in the first term of the UPA Government in 2004, the party had firmly resolved on safeguarding the integrity of the country especially the North-Eastern states when the newly formed Left-UPA Coordination Committee had tried to launch “National Common Minimum Program”, the release added.

The party has never stopped in uniting the people of the state under one roof. The party urges people to join hands with them to protect the state’s territorial integrity and invite peace to the land.

Manipuris are starting to find their mark in the game of archery, literally. Although, two times Olympian Laishram Bombayla had been hogging the limelight singly for sometime, two players from the state have made significant progress in their performances and brought laurels for the state this year. The archers, Paonam Lily Chanu and Khuraijam Ratan Kumar, have capped off a wonderful 2013, during which they have trotted the globe, by winning gold medals in their respective categories in the recently concluded 18th Asian Archery Championship hosted at Chinese Taipei. Their senior counterpart Bombayla too had a fairly commendable year with respectable performances winning the World Cup recurve team title at Medellin, Colombia and Wroclaw, Poland, beating mighty Koreans to win the titles.

Hopefully, the fantastic success of the trio can instill phenomenal inspiration to young and upcoming archers, assist them to overcome their bundle of nerves and rule the international circuit. Agreed, the competition at the state level is barely of the highest class technically. But the state has thrown up good players on a random basis. Surreal, as it may sound, many of the barriers in sports are psychological. History is replete with incidents when a standard or feat that is considered beyond the realms of possibilities become an ordinary task after somebody accomplishes it. A constantly shared example is the barrier of 4-minute mile which was considered not merely unreachable but according to physiologists at one time, dangerous to the health of any athlete who attempted to reach it. Roger Bannister crossed the finish line with a time of 3 minutes, 59.4 seconds in 1954. Within the next three years, 16 runners had logged the sub-4 minutes miles. In the local context, Ng Dinko Singh’s fists of fury brought a gold medal in the Bangkok Asian Games out of nowhere. What happened in the following years is history. A crop of brilliant pugilists from Manipur inundated the national boxing scenario. Among them was Manipur’s greatest sportsperson, Mary Kom who admittedly was inspired by Dingko’s success.

Incidentally, archery in Manipur is as old as the Manipuri culture itself. Traditionally, it was the bamboo bow and arrow which was in action from time immemorial, be it for battles, hunting or recreational sports. But competitive archery is very expensive as it requires scientific and technologically advanced bows and arrows among others if one has to focus his mind on pursuing the game till international glory. It will be a win-win bet for the association in control of the game in the state to identify, recruit and train young guns in this sport, based on the success achieved by our archers this year.

TAMENGLONG, November 13 (NNN): The situation continues to be volatile at Bhalok village area (Phailong) a day after the shoot out between the cadres of NSCN-IM and Zeliangrong United Front (ZUF).

Fear gripped the villagers of Bhalok and many of them have refused to return to their village after they had fled following the shoot out yesterday.

According to the speculation in the area, the NSCN-IM and ZUF are consolidating their position for further confrontations. And the situation has even fueled the villagers to flee to the safe places.

Meanwhile, the three slain cadres of ZUF have been identified today.

The deceased ZUF cadres have been identified as `sergeant major` Pougailung Kamei, 28, son of K Gaikhangmon of Namkaoluang village (Part II), Khoupum; `sergeant major` Khongailung, 26, son of Pouduanrei of Chamtila village, Cachar district, Assam and `corporal`, Niamthaipou Kamei, 20, son of Kaguithon of Ragailong village, Khoupum, Tamenglong district.

Meanwhile, the ZUF has refuted the claims made by NSCN-IM that it had launched attacks on the latter outfit.

According to A Dangmei, information secretary of ZUF, the gun battle of November 12 was triggered by the attacks launched by the NSCN-IM on the former group. A Dangmei said the gun-battle which started from 12 :30 pm had lasted till 5:30 pm.

According to A Dangmei, the cadres of Zeliangrong Tigers Force (ZTF), the armed wing of ZUF were proceeding towards Bhalok (Phailong village) on their assignment but they were ambushed by NSCN-IM men who rained the bullets killing three cadres.

“The NSCN-IM spread false information to draw public sympathy and support putting the blame on the ZUF.  It was the NSCN-IM that stealthily ambushed our boys who retaliated with heavy gunshot killing one NSCN-IM and injuries four of them”, the ZUF leader claimed.

A Dangmei also stated that the NSCN-IM did not get any arms from the `fallen soldiers`. A Dangmei added the ZTF boys coming from Irang (Alang) River towards Phalong without knowing the plan to ambush laid by the NSCN-IM.

The ZUF leadership then sent heartfelt condolence to the family members of the slain Zeliangrong United Front (ZUF) cadres.

“They left with us indelible foot prints for all to follow. They dreams of a healthy Zeliangrong, shall inspire our people generation to generation. The ZUF mourned the dead of comrades’ patriots who had given their whole for our tomorrow to live in peace and harmony and pray that the Almighty grant them eternal life in His heavenly abode. We also share the grief of the bereaved families at this hour of tragic incident and pray that may God give them enough courage and solace to bear the agony”, A Dangmei stated.

The ZUF leadership then expressed profound gratitude to the people from different walks of life including Namboliu and colleagues, Women Join Acton Committee, ZSU-TD, ZYF-TD  and all the local people of Tamenglong who have showered immense love and sympathy towards the fallen heroes. The Peace Committee, Tamenglong headquarters who also extended token of condolence to the bereaved families, clothes and money to the bereaved families. The ZUF Leadership shall value the public and support and sympathy, A. Dangmei added.
