By Paonam Thoibi
Q1: Dear counselor, are counseling sessions different from psychiatric sessions? When does one need professional Counseling? Often we read or see movie scenes where the therapist makes a person lie down on a couch. Is this integral to such sessions and is this practiced everywhere? Name and add withheld

Ans: Both psychological counseling and psychiatric sessions are various terms used to imply the psychological therapies or treatments provided to people who are seeking support and treatment for a wide range of mental health and emotional issues. Both are provided by a well-trained Psychologist or a Psychiatrist who underwent certain training, practice, ethics and earned a lot of experience. Simply put, a counseling session may look like someone confidentially talking to a well-trained person who is not a friend or family member; on how to tackle crises while psychotherapy tends to focus on a long-term and deeply embedded psychological conditions and problems.

Many people come across phases in their life when they need professional emotional support and provide suggestions to help them in decision making and problem solving. People with psychological conditions often show different signs and symptoms which makes the immediate family members or friends aware that they will need professional help.

In adults, the signs may be excessive sadness or irritability, aloofness, altered sleep and eating pattern, unexplained physical ailments, suicidal thoughts, deterioration of hygiene, substance use etc.

Children and pre-adolescents often presented with persistent disobedience, temper tantrums, hyperactivity and inattention, decline in academic or athletic performance, emotional outbursts, over consciousness of body weight, poor appetite etc.

And coming to the last part of your question; the use of a couch is traditionally a Psychoanalyst’s technique for Psychoanalysis. Therefore, a Psychoanalyst, who follows Freud’s theory of Psychoanalysis, would definitely make it a point to use a couch in their therapy sessions. Psychoanalyst have often noted that in lying down, peoples’ perspective changes. Clients become aware of their feelings and thoughts more. Also, an environment as such makes free association about the unconscious mental processes made possible which is the most integral part of Psychoanalysis.

Q2. Dear Madam, we often heard that people will suffer long term psychiatric illness if they met with trauma. Is it true? What is the best way to avoid it? – Ramesh, Checkon
Ans: Dear Ramesh, any traumatic event like experiences of rape, torture, military combat, earthquake, a disastrous fire, and the collapse of a large building etc can cause severe trauma.)

A cluster of psychological symptoms can follow a psychologically distressing event and this is called Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

For a person who has been exposed to an intensely traumatic event to be diagnosed with PTSD, certain criteria are to be met. They include re-experiencing of the traumatic event in the form of recurrent and intrusive distressing recollections, dreams, reliving the experience, illusions, hallucinations, persistent avoidance of any reminders of the event, inability to recall an important aspect of the trauma numbing of general responsiveness, difficulty falling asleep, emotional lability and increased arousal or hyper-vigilance etc.

To warrant a diagnosis of PTSD, a person must experience these symptoms for at least one month.

Whenever a person comes across a crisis situation, a prompt and proper crisis intervention by skilled professionals is vital to reduce the risk of a person developing PTSD.

Psychotherapies like Testimonial therapy, Cognitive-behavioral therapy and exposure treatments along with medications seem to be helpful to PTSD clients.

Q3. Is hypnosis used for counseling sessions? If so, when is it used and how effective is it? Some literatures have mentioned instances where people under hypnosis have experienced past life experiences. Is this possible? Th Opendra, Kongba

Ans: Dear Opendra, the Hypnosis technique used in Psychotherapy/Counseling is called Clinical hypnosis where a person receives hypnotherapy induced by qualified Hypnotherapist, with the aim of changing his/her dysfunctional behavior, emotional content and attitudes. It is used for the effective management of pain, anxiety symptoms, and depression, phobia and sleep disorders. Yes, people have reportedly heard about instances where past life experiences are relived under hypnosis. The practice is called “Past life regression” and is typically undertaken either in pursuit of a spiritual experience, or in a psychotherapeutic setting. It is still a hugely debated topic and many research found that contents of the memories reported from the past lives are based on the client’s belief in reincarnation and suggestions by the hypnotist.

Govt to lift CrPC Sec 144 in Ukhrul on trial run

IMPHAL, September 5: A high level committee comprising the Union additional secretary (Home) Rajiv Gauba, Joint secretary (North East in-charge) Sambhu Singh and Special secretary (Internal Security) Prakash Mishra arrived

IMPHAL, September 5: A high level committee comprising the Union additional secretary (Home) Rajiv Gauba, Joint secretary (North East in-charge) Sambhu Singh and Special secretary (Internal Security) Prakash Mishra arrived in the state to take stock of the situation here after the Ukhrul incident and left at around 5.30pm today.

This was stated by deputy Chief Minister Gaikhangam at a press conference in his office chamber today evening.

The Central government is ready to help the state government under any circumstance, he said.

CrPC Section 144 which is now being imposed in Ukhrul will be lifted tomorrow from 6am to 6pm as a trial run and if the law and order situation improves it will be removed completely, said Gaikhangam.

Relaxing Section 144 for a day doesn’t mean that the government is scared or acting under pressure from the Centre, it is only being lifted as a mark of good gesture like parents do to placate children when they throw tantrums for some demands, he added.

The representatives met the Chief Minister, Governor and other officials, the deputy CM said, adding that a series of meetings were convened to improve the situation and arranging security for bringing in essential commodities with officials of the paramilitary forces and state forces today.

The Central government representatives have arrived as a result of the meeting between the CM and deputy CM with the Union Home Minister recently during which they informed the Union Home minister about the ground reality in Manipur.

The State government has taken all possible steps to provide all the essential communities like fuel, LPG etc even during the bandh called by UNC which began on September 4, Gaikhangam said.

Continuing that the State forces will be deployed along with the Assam Rifles and the Army for security purposes, he said all the essential goods will be provided during the bandh without any shortages.

He also appealed the public to refrain from calling frequent bandhs which affects the public.

Gaikhangam said the assassination of an ADC member, (L) Ngalangzar Malue, on July 12 was not the first incident as many people have been killed in ambush attacks in the past. More than 200 civilians have been killed, he added.

The government deployed the State security forces to bring peace and control the law and order condition in Ukhrul because the government could not remain a mute spectator when people broke law with impunity, said the deputy CM.

He added that many people appreciated the state government for its bold actions.

The unfortunate incident on August 30 broke out only after the purported peaceful rally turned violent and the protestors started thrashing five Manipur police personnel including an SDPO and snatched their service guns and burn down government vehicles, the deputy Chief Minister said, adding that the police personnel remain calm under the extremely tense situation and refused to be provoked but had to act in self defense.

If police personnel had acted in a cavalier manner, many more lives could have been lost with more several injuries, he said.

He further said that the government is trying to bring an amicable solution but is aware that a big organization is behind the mess in Ukhrul.

By Alex Guite

LAMKA, September 5: Vehicle owners in Churachanpur district have not received any petrol from the three pumps located in Lamka town for the last six days and with a blockade looming large along the National Highways, it seems there is no respite for motorists who can only just wait and watch.

Officials of the district on conditions of anonymity told IFP that they are hard-pressed to fix the problem which is compounded by rampant selling of petrol in the black market.

If petrol ceases to be available in the black market, motorists will be left without any means to buy petrol as oil depots are running dry. The district collector PK Jha told IFP that he has been monitoring the situation and was trying to fix the problem.

The fuel scarcity has been hard on the motorists who have to run helter-skelter to get fuel at a price which is already as much as Rs. 40 more than the usual price as black marketers now sell it at Rs 110 per litre or more.

The shortage is compounded by frequent bandhs and blockades in Manipur but the lack of compliance to the proposed regulations of the district administration has also played a major factor.

The DC had issued an order on May 5 that heavy motor vehicles should be allotted 40 litres of diesel, light vehicles with 20 litres of diesel, both diesel and petrol versions of three wheelers with either 10 litres of diesel or petrol, four wheeler petrol vehicles with 20 litres of petrol and two wheelers with 10 litres per day.

The directive to enforce the allocations has however not been implemented.

Many motorists told this correspondent that they were helpless as owners of petrol pumps in collusion with the black marketers continue to flout the regulations from the district administration.

Meanwhile, Churachandpur SP K Kabib told IFP that they are planning to routinely monitor the black marketing of all essential commodities apart from petrol and LPG after receiving complaints and having notice such practices by the black marketers who take advantage of the frequent bandhs.

However, some of the petrol pump owners claimed that they are not to be blamed as the petrol which are sold in black are procured from Mizoram at Rs 95 per litre with great difficulty which the black marketers sell at Rs 120 or more per litre.

Despite the fact that the owners of petrol pumps in town are not entirely responsible for the booming sell of fuel in the black market, they cannot be let off the hook easily either, a motorist said.

Sharmila disappointed by lack of public support

IMPHAL, September 5: Anti AFSPA crusader Irom Chanu Sharmila has been remanded to judicial custody by the JMIC, Imphal East today. Sharmila will be produced before the same court again

IMPHAL, September 5: Anti AFSPA crusader Irom Chanu Sharmila has been remanded to judicial custody by the JMIC, Imphal East today.

Sharmila will be produced before the same court again on September 19.

The concerned court offered to grant her bail on PR bond of Rs 10,000, however Sharmila declined unless it was unconditional release.

Further speaking to some media persons, after the court proceedings Sharmila expressed her disappointment over the lack of support from the people despite her repeated call for mass support.

“With the recent court judgement in her favour and the warm welcome I was accorded with at the Ima market, I genuinely felt very positive about the people’s sentiment towards the cause. Now I am back to where I had begun from and I feel very disappointed and lost as all those attention from the public has been reduced to just a show,” said a sentimental Sharmila.

In response to a query regarding her re-arrest on the pretext of her health status, Sharmila questioned “What kind of human rights are we getting here, if they have failed to understand the hardship of being nose-fed for 14 years though I have not tasted even a single drop of water during the period.”

It may be noted that Sharmila was freed on August 20, following a judgement of a Session Court.

Soon after her released from the JNIMS hospital security ward, an emotive Sharmila’s first word to the media was “I need mass support from my people.”

However, she was re-arrested under IPC 309 attempting to suicide on August 22 despite the session court acquitting her of the same section.
