IMPHAL, July 8: Strongly condemning the State security personnel for killing a young student, the Joint Committee on Inner Line Permit System has imposed a boycott of non-locals in the State for five days and sought support of the public.
The announcement was made during a hurriedly called press conference at the JCILPS office by its convenor Khomdram Ratan following the death of the class XI student in police action to control students taking out a rally demanding implementation of the ILPS in the State today.
Elaborating on the boycott, Ratan said non-locals will not be allowed to enter the State during the five day period and at the same time those already in the State will not be allowed to come out of their rooms.
Meanwhile, the JCILPS also maintained a two-minute silence in respect to the departed soul of the student killed in the police action.
A 16-year old class XI student of Ananda Singh Higher Secondary School, Sapam Robinhood, son of Sapam Romesh of Keisamthong and presently staying at Leirikyengbam Leikai was hit by a tear gas shell fired by the police to control students taking out a rally today. He later succumbed at the hospital resulting in mass protest and outcry from the public and student community in the State.
Ratan also declared that Robinhood has been given the title of `Yelhoumee Kanbagi Lamjing Meira`™ for his sacrifice.
Robinhood`™s sacrifice, he said will motivate the movement to safeguard the indigenous community of the State.
Now the movement will be intensified from tomorrow, he said seeking support of the public.
He appealed to the people to defy the curfew imposed by the government and stage sit in protests, rallies and burn effigies tomorrow and pressurize the State government to hear the voice of the public.
The JCILPS further demand capital punishment for the responsible police personnel, said the committee`™s student wing convenor P Angamba.
It is very unfortunate that the MLAs sitting in the Assembly has failed to take up the burning issue of ILPS demand and hence they are not fit to be public leaders and step down from their posts on moral grounds.
He continued the students protest was a peaceful demonstration demanding the implementation of the ILPS in a democratic manner.
However, the police used their service weapons on the students from a close range killing a student in the process, he continued
Deputy Chief Minister Gaikhangam who holds the Home portfolio should take action against the responsible personnel at the earliest, he demanded.
The protest of the students will continue, he said.
Now that the police have started killing we will demand them to kill all the students, he continued.
He further said that Robinhood`™s sacrificed will be remembered for all times to come.
The press meet was also attended by other executive members of JCILPS.
