Customs seizes gold worth around Rs. 1.79 crores

Thirty-six gold biscuits weighing 5976.2 grams worth around Rs. 1.79 crores were seized today by the customs department from Imphal international airport from the possession of six passengers.

The six individuals are identified as Kewal Singh (27) son of Lekh Raj from Jammu and Kashmir, Dulair Singh son of Suresh Kumar from Jammu and Kashmir, Neeraja (29) son of Ratan Chand from Punjab, Rintu Halder son of Arup Halder from West Bengal, Mintu Pan son of Sunil Pan from West Bengal and Rohit Bagga son of Pramod Bagga from Delhi.

Speaking to media persons custom division, Imphal deputy commissioner, Gaikhonlung Panmei said that the air intelligent unit customs division, Imphal in coordination with the CISF seized the gold biscuits acting on specific information.

The six arrested individuals were trying to smuggle the gold to Delhi and West Bengal by concealing in their rectum, he added.

He claimed that many of the illegal gold were brought from Burma and the smuggling process is mostly carried out by non-locals. 

In order to stop the smuggling process he asked the security personnel to stay alert.
