AMWJU protests killing of Tripura journalist

IMPHAL | Sept 21

Members of All Manipur Working Journalist Union (AMWJU) staged a sit-in protest today condemning the killing of journalist, Santanu Bhowmik yesterday evening while covering Indigenous People’s Front of Tripura (IPFT) agitation at Tripura.

According to police reports Santanu who was working at a local television channel was abducted and killed using sharps object while covering the agitation.

AMWJU president, W. Samjai said that such unlawful act of killing a journalist while performing his duty is a challenge to the freedom of press.

In the state from the year 1982 till today six journalists were killed but till today police are still not able to arrest the murderer, he added.

Though press is referred as the 4th estate of the democracy a total of 36 journalists of the state have faced harassment from security personnel and locals while performing their duties, continued the union president.

Stating that media persons are serving the public without having any bias in reporting he said it will be very wrong to kill or attack a journalist and appealed not to repeat such action in the future.
