Bane of Inequality

Perfect social and economic equality is a myth, which is perhaps why a perfect Communist state too has always been a dream too far. It is not uncommon for this dream to turn into a nightmare too. Nobody has done a better parody of such dream chasers than George Orwell, first in `Animal Farm` and hen in another novel `1984 – A Novel`. The latter was first published in 1949 and is more of a prophecy of what things would be like in 1984 if the illusory chase persists. With the advantage of hindsight, we do know nothing of the nature of what Orwell imagined happened in the year 1984 or even later. But we do know that in the closing decade of the last century, the obituary for all totalitarian rules was already written. Difference between peoples is a destiny of nature and there is nothing much anybody can do about this. All things are by this virtue, different despite very many similarities. Even children of the same parents have as many differences as there are similarities. Inclinations, temperaments, intelligence quotients, skills etc, have seldom been identical, not even in mono-zygotic twins (identical twins). All the better too, for variety is what ensures life is never a drag. In any case, to force everybody to a pre-defined level in the name of equality can hardly be called promoting freedom.

Celebrating variety and differences does not however also mean we must celebrate inequality. On the other hand, this is only a reiteration of a much stated wisdom that the quest for an egalitarian society must be set on a different foundation. The basic principle must be to make opportunities equal, and from then on let it be every individual`™s lookout. No we are not at all talking about existing or planned positive discrimination policy measures. Let that be a matter of another debate. We are here talking about a more fundamental issue of ensuring equal opportunities precisely by ensuring basic quality education. Unfortunately, this is one area which the government has been neglecting for far too long, and in the process creating a condition in which availability of opportunities has been incrementally made unequal. In fact, thanks to this criminal neglect, the ladder to the top echelon of the social hierarchy may have already become totally unavailable to a larger section of the society`™s future generations. In this increasingly competitive world, which student from a poor family who has had no option but to study in a government primary school can hope to bag a seat in the courses for the top professions such as medicine and engineering etc. Given the quality of education in government schools where a majority are bound by the economic conditions to study, can opportunities be said to be equal even if by a legal definition it may be so and there are no legal obstacles against any class of students from taking part in the competition.

In this regard, the new and imaginative initiative of the government to revive government schools is laudable. Other than this, by and large those who have held the rein of power in the state have remained unconcerned. They have allowed the school system here to rot though they would have their own children educated away from the state, and be amongst the elite few to book a place in the society`™s top strata. Year after year, government schools have shown dismal results in the public examinations, and this year too it was hardly different. For far too long, recruitment of teachers have been through D.O. letters and recommendations, rather than merit. Teachers`™ transfers and postings too have been by the same route. Bad performances by schools have gone un-penalised just as outstanding performances have seen no rewards. Schools without students as well as schools without teachers have been allowed to remain outside the government scanner. This condition of anarchy, it seems is the government`™s idea of freedom.

The question is, can a minority group who has had all the best benefits the system can provide, ever find peace in the same space they will have to share with a majority who had been excluded from the system altogether because of dereliction of duty and responsibility by those in power. Inequalities that result because of natural differences and abilities will seldom be resented, but inequality because of deprived opportunities is what comes with explosive potentials. Manipur is currently witness to this phenomenon. We do hope there is a change of outlook soon.

Kangujam Kanarjit – Youth icon cheated local businessmen, victimized foreign delegates

By Paojel Chaoba

IMPHAL, May 27: Further exposing the fraud perpetrated by K Kanarjit, self acclaimed general secretary of Club 25 International Manipur, private firms and individuals whom he duped have come out complaining of his nefarious activities.
It may be mentioned that Kanarjit had clarified to the media earlier during a press conference that he had no dues to clear. He was reacting to IFP report mentioning him of not clearing bills related to the Global Youth Meet held in 2014.

Today, disgruntled individuals and self help groups claimed with proper documents that Kanarjit has not cleared their outstanding dues since 2014.

`We have been duped by this person and he refuses to pay the dues, we are seeking the help of the media to show this person for the fraud he truly is, we seek justice from the concerned authorities,` Khomdram Sunil, manager of Vegetable and Fruits Development self-help group told media persons at Manipur Press Club.

Similar complaints were raised from Universal Printers, Backward Development Organization, Oneiric Circle, CCC Media, M/s Joy Enterprises that Kanarjit has swindled them.

They said that he has been postponing payment by giving one excuse or the other.

K Sunil further said that he was made to pay Rs 8 lakhs as an advance amount to Kanarjit for contracting the stage decorations, hall hiring and supplying mementoes for the Global Youth Meet, 2014. `He has paid me Rs 6,60,000 till date out of the total Rs 24,60,200 owed`, he said.

`What he gave does not even amount to the deposit I paid him. He owes me Rs 18,30,200 still. I had mortgaged my father`™s pension book for the advance deposit and am still paying interest. I sold my car just recently,` he added that his firm had donated Rs 1,20,000 for the Youth Meet on the request of Kanarjit.

Joy Enterprises had built the gate at MFDC for the 2014 Meet, the total cost was Rs 80,000. `I caught him, took away his car keys and detained him at my office,` proprietor Joy added that Kanarjit was let go after he paid Rs 20,000 but still owes him Rs 60,000.

As per complaint by other firms, Kanarjit owes Rs 8.66 lacs to Sharma Sandesh Centre. They had catered for the meals for the Meet. He owes Rs 4,85,000 to CCC Media for photography and films. A sum of Rs 13.54 lacs approximately to Oneiric Circle. He owes Universal Printers Rs 2 lacs. The complainants said that there are more people whom Kanarjit owes money for the last two youth events.

The said they were lured by Kanarjit Singh saying that the meet was an UNESCO program and had advertised so in the papers. It may be mentioned that the Meet was organized then as under `UNESCO Youth Foundation, Asia Pacific Region regional office in collaboration with Club 25 International (USA). Kanarjit also opened his account under UNESCO Youth Foundation at Bank of Baroda. He later removed the UNESCO logo and acronym after being warned by UN authorities.

Kanarjit had insisted that the advance amount was necessary as per international norms of UNESCO, according to the complainants. He also assured them by saying that it was an International event, the Chief Minister, Governor and foreign nationals were attending. Sources said Kanarjit even circulated false claims that the program would be attended by Aung San Suu Kyi and Arnold Schwarzenegger.

They said that Kanarjit has been victimizing them for long, as his earlier promise was to clear bills within 72 hours of conclusion of the youth meet. Even after the 2015 World Youth Summit, he still has not cleared dues. It may be mentioned that besides deceiving the local contractors, Kanarjit also duped the foreign delegates. He had assured travelling allowance of 300 dollars to foreign delegates, but did not honor this commitment. According to a delegate from Bangladesh, he had seen many foreign delegates crying when Kanarjit refused to pay the amount. `They thought they would get a bursary like 300USD, I have also done same and managed my travel to Imphal as Kanarjit Singh told me everything is fine and will give the amount to bear the travel cost.` He mentioned that Kanarjit when confronted by the delegates had even shouted and threatened them. He had said that since the Meet was over, the travelling problems and other financial matters were totally their own. One of Kanarjit`™s cronies had told this Bangladeshi delegate that Kanarjit is a dangerous man and he might do something illegal like putting contraband in his suitcase and may end up in jail. `Many delegates try to raise their voice but due to the personal security, they were silent. As a Bangladeshi delegate, I have spent 28,000 taka (350 USD) for my travel to Imphal, but I got only 5000 Rs. Now my question is not about the money. I am asking the delegates what you gain from this conference ? What is our lesson ? For me, it was wasting my time and money, my friends asked me about Manipur but I took the opportunity to be silent. This man cheated our soft hearts, what culture will we share about Manipur.` This chain letter sent to delegates of the Meet ascertains that Kanarjit not only cheated and victimized foreign delegates but also promoted Manipur as negatively as possible.

The local contractors also said today that even if a real international youth event happens here, no one will be willing to take part. `How can they even consider this fraud for a youth icon award,` said L Deben Singh, secretary of Backward Development Organization. The victims formed a Joint Action Committee today after the press meet and resolved to file charges against Kanarjit. They also appealed to concerned authorities and organizations to investigate the matter and for justice to be done.

Vehicular movement along NH-102 disrupted due to JAC bandh

IMPHAL, May 26: Indo-Burma trade and vehicular movement along National Highway-102 came to a grinding halt today due to the ongoing 48-hour highway bandh imposed by the Joint Action Committee

IMPHAL, May 26: Indo-Burma trade and vehicular movement along National Highway-102 came to a grinding halt today due to the ongoing 48-hour highway bandh imposed by the Joint Action Committee from May 25 midnight demanding immediate removal of KNO/KNLF from Tengnoupal Block.

In a press meet which was attended by the JAC members at Kuki Students`™ Organisation, Tengnoupal Block, Chandel, JAC secretary L Thangboi Mate reiterated that the JAC was compelled to impose the bandh as the government has utterly failed to shift the designated camp of KNLF from Tengnoupal Block despite intimation by local MLA DK Korungthang to Deputy Chief Minister Gaikhangam on May 19 appealing to shift the camp within two days.

He said that the Hermon designated camp has already accommodated cadres of KNA, UMLA and PRA but the recent inclusion of KNLF cadre into the said camp has created lots of problems in the area.

He warned that if the government fails to address the matter then the JAC will be compelled to resort to launch intense agitation after the ADC election on June 1.

He continued that cadres of the underground outfits were allowed to stay in the camp following an understanding with the Government of India and Government of Manipur with the hope that it will being peace in the area.

`We want potable water and more schools in the area but not guns and violence`™, he said, adding that development does not come from resorting to using guns.

Saying that there is an apparent lack of infrastructure to bring development in the area but the government has turned the area into a zone of UG groups, he questioned that how students and youths in the area could become good and responsible citizens in such unfavourable situation in the area.

He urged to the government to fulfil the demands of the JAC including immediate removal of KNLF cadres from the block at the earliest so as to maintain peace and harmony in the area.

Supporting the bandh, locals of the area blocked the National Highway 102 and slogans such as `we want peace and harmony not gun`™, `Do not make our area a den of underground outfits`™ etc were displayed.

Tapir Gao questions govt`s `inaction` on Dzuko Valley issue

IMPHAL, May 26: BJP national executive member Tapir Gao has demanded Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh and his deputy Chief Minister Gaikhangam to provide an explanation, their role and stand

IMPHAL, May 26: BJP national executive member Tapir Gao has demanded Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh and his deputy Chief Minister Gaikhangam to provide an explanation, their role and stand on the boundary dispute in Dzuko Valley.

Addressing an observation of the BJP`™s completing one year at the Centre, Tapir Gao said the Centre has a role to play in resolving inter-State boundary resolves.

But, he questioned, why has the State government of Manipur remained silent on the Dzuko Valley land encroachment issue for so many years.

He said it is a big surprise that even though the Nagaland government has constructed a 15-km road and a tourist lodge in Manipur territory, the State government continues to remain silent.

The BJP national executive member said Gaikhangam who is the State Home minister is also a Naga leader, and further demanded that he must clarify on his stand on the issue before the people of Manipur.

Tapir questioned Gaikhangam, what his role is in the construction of the road and tourists lodge by the Nagaland government at Dzuko Valley.

He also questioned whether the Senapati district administration and concern SDO still exist.

He continued there are reports of UG groups who are signatories of the Suspension of Operation or the Cease-fire agreement are involved in threatening ADC candidates of political parties except for NPF.

He said NSCN (IM) collective leaders sitting at the outfit`™s headquarter at Hebron have clarified that they have not given any directive to their cadres on the issue.

They have also informed that the outfit is under cease-fire with the government of India and have always maintained the ground rules, he said.

He further appealed to all the Kuki and Naga UG groups not to interfere in the conduct of the ADC election.

There are also reports of SoO signatory KNF (N) cadres moving openly with weapons at Saikul area and why have the State government remained silent on this issue, he further questioned.

BJP Manipur Pradesh president Chaoba has said that the UPA government in the Centre during the last 10 years had brought down the name of the country before the world, which has been restored by the Modi government in just one year.

He said in June, the Prime Minister will launch the first Atal Pension Yojana which will provide Rs 1000 to Rs 5000 to persons who are above the age of 60 years.

The Prime Minister has put focus on NE among his top priority, he said.

However, the Manipur government is neglecting the schemes of the Central government and it is clear that the State government does not want development in the State, he claimed.

In the function State BJP leaders and party workers were also present.

Art and culture on the descent in State: JNMDA director

IMPHAL, May 26: The State`™s art and culture is moving backward as compared to a few years back, said JN Manipur Dance Academy director L Upendro Sharma. The main factor

IMPHAL, May 26: The State`™s art and culture is moving backward as compared to a few years back, said JN Manipur Dance Academy director L Upendro Sharma.

The main factor for this is the demise of many eminent personalities of art and culture which has somewhat impeded the growth, he said at the 16th foundation day observation of the All Manipur Art & Culture Students`™ Union today.

The observation was held at the Jawaharlal Nehru Manipur Dance Academy, Imphal today.

The deceased of many imminent personalities have left such a void that the present crop of artists is failing to fill in, he said.

This is quite unfortunate, he added.

He continued a student of art & culture should be diligent in learning the finer aspects of his field.

The director also lauded the works of AMACSU and the role it plays for the development of Nata Sankritan.

He continued the JNMDA and the AMACSU get along very well because most of the office bearers and members of AMACSU are former students of the JNMDA.

Art & culture director Dr K Sushila said culture is a way of life and we need to take it out of the State more often to popularise and develop it.

Ibobi attacks BJP, says party trying to mislead people with lies

IMPHAL, May 26: Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh today urged the people to have faith that his government will assure there is no shortage of funds for the Autonomous District

IMPHAL, May 26: Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh today urged the people to have faith that his government will assure there is no shortage of funds for the Autonomous District Council members to work for development of the Hill States.

This is the irrevocable promise of the present government to the people, he said at the District Level Congress Workers`™ Conference in connection with the yearlong celebration of the 125th birth anniversary of Babasaheb Dr BR Ambedkar cum ADC election campaign meeting in Ukhrul.

The conference cum campaign meeting was held at the community hall of the Wunghon Village, Ukhrul.

He said today`™s programme was organised at the venue considering it to be a suitable venue for Ukhrul, Sadar Hills and Imphal East.

Ibobi said he does not take seriously all the talks being made in the run-up to the ADC election, however, several Union Ministers including Prime Minister Narendra Modi are spreading lies.

If the lies are repeated often enough, people will also start believing them and it is better if we could clear the air at the opportune time, the Chief Minister asserted.

Ibobi said, India was under the rule of the British for more than 200 years.

The Congress had played an important role in the bringing independence to the country, whereas there were none from the BJP, he asserted.

He said the mere fact that India is today the 3rd most developed country in the world has been possible only due to the 60-years long rule of the Congress.

The BJP had been in power for five years under Atal Bihari Vajpayee and it is one year since Narendra Modi became the Prime Minister, he said.

What development has the BJP brought to the people of the land, the Chief Minister questioned?

He said it was the Congress who had transferred power to the local bodies. It was also the Congress that worked for women empowerment in the country, he added.

None of these have been brought about by the BJP, Ibobi said.

All the infrastructure development witnessed in the State today were undertaken with funds sanctioned by the Congress when it was in power in the Centre, he continued.

Taking a dig at Union Ministers arriving in droves in the State ahead of the ADC election, the Chief Minister said in recent times the State has witnessed several Union Minister arriving in the State, however, instead of bringing any development packages for the State, they had enquired if there were any project which needs to be inaugurated or of which foundation stones had to be laid.

The Union Ministers visiting the State seem to look down on of the people of the hills, as they have only spoken lies, the Chief Minister asserted.

Elaborating further, Ibobi said the Centre can directly sanction funds to only a few institutes like the RIMS, Manipur University or the NIT, as for others, all funds should come through the State government.

India has a federal structure of government and the BJP government at the Centre cannot deny any necessary funds to the State government, he asserted.

Today`™s function was also attended by Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee president Gaikhangam, Commerce and Industries minister Govindas Konthoujam, RD & PR minister Francis Ngajokpa, deputy Speaker MK Preshaw Shimray, MLA Ksh Biren Singh, Saikul MLA Yamthang Haokip, ADC candidates of the party among others.

Sit-in denounces kidnapping of BJP worker`s wife

IMPHAL, May 26: In protest against the alleged kidnapping of a BJP worker`™s wife by unidentified persons, women of 9-Purum District Council Constituency held a sit-in-protest at a waiting shed

IMPHAL, May 26: In protest against the alleged kidnapping of a BJP worker`™s wife by unidentified persons, women of 9-Purum District Council Constituency held a sit-in-protest at a waiting shed along Pallel-Chandel District Headquarters road near Sektaikarong Village in Chandel District today.

Since late in the morning, women of the District Council Constituency staged the sit-in-protest against the kidnapping of M Temoishim, wife of the BJP Worker Angdun Maring of Khudei Khunou Villlage by some unknown miscreants at around 5.30 pm yesterday.

Several placards which read such as `Kidnapping of BJP Worker is a coward act`,

`We demand action against the kidnappers`, `We demand women`™s safety in the District`, “™We demand free and fair election` etc were used by women protesters at the protest demonstration.

Narrating about the last night incident, M Temoishim told media persons that some unknown miscreants came to the village yesterday and after calling her out from the Church they enquired about whereabouts of her husband.

The wife continued that she went back to attend the church service after informing them that she have no knowledge about whereabouts of her husband but after the church service, the miscreants took her to a vehicle in which chief of the village was onboard the vehicle with some unknown persons.

Temoishim maintained that on seeing the village chief, she request him to reason the unknown miscreants but the miscreants forced her to aboard the vehicle and took her away despite repeated appeal to release her.

“™They do not even allow me to see my children or take some cloths along with. Later, the unknown miscreants set me free near Komlathabi Village at around 8 pm last night`™`™, she claimed.

Speaking on the sidelines of the protest, Kim, a resident of Sektaikarong expressed shock on the kidnapping of the innocent wife of the BJP worker, saying there had been another incident of kidnapping of a wife of a BJP candidate in connection with the ensuing ADC election.

Demanding to nab and book those individuals involved in the kidnapping, Kim also warned to launch different forms of intense agitation if such incident of kidnapping of innocent woman occurs again in future.

Law and Disorder

The prevailing chaos in Manipur today, especially ahead of elections, would make anybody rethink the notion of individual liberty upon which the very concept of democracy is based. Democracy`™s ultimate

The prevailing chaos in Manipur today, especially ahead of elections, would make anybody rethink the notion of individual liberty upon which the very concept of democracy is based. Democracy`™s ultimate sovereign must remain the individual voter, and the aggregate of the will of the individuals in a given society is what is sought to be determined in any democratic election. So when this freedom is put under shackles, as is overtly happening ahead of the current rounds of ADC elections, democracy can have little meaning. Furthermore, what has also become urgently essential is to take a relook at the notion of the `State` and its relation to individual freedom. This would also imply a re-examination of the very understanding of `freedom`. Is it a standalone value, or must be come predicated to the `State`. In this connection, an episode from the 1970s Hollywood classic, `The Ten Commandments`, rescreened periodically on 24-hour movie TV channels such as the HBO is interesting. After his encounter God manifested as the `Burning Bush`, on Mt Sinai, Moses (Charlton Heston) returns with the inscribed `Ten Commandments` stone tablets to his people, recently freed from slavery under the Pharaoh of Egypt, and finds them revelling, idol worshiping and indulging in other gross hedonistic pursuits. When Moses tells them of the `Ten Commandments`, there were near riots. One among the crowd shouts back at him objecting to the new edicts of the Ten Commandments: `We want freedom`. Moses`™ answer to the man is remarkable: `There can be no freedom without the law` he shouts back.

This single sentence could arguably be the most profound defence, validation and vindication of the `State`. Without the `State` institution, and the `order` that its `laws` establish, all notions of individual liberty and rights would predictably acquire a different meaning, if not cease to have meaning altogether. So in the event of the authority of the `State` withering away, the result is not freedom as many presume, but lawlessness and anarchy. Those of us in Manipur probably would not find this difficult to understand. We live in a condition in which the State has withdrawn its legitimate authority, and everybody virtually has become the law. This is an argument for the `State` in these times of anarchy when so many are given to talking of the `State` as something dispensable. Clearly, we cannot allow it to wither away just as yet, if at all. The `State` and its instruments are still vital, although with good moderations. For the `State` and its instruments can get overbearingly authoritarian, as any unchecked power can, and hence one of the chief functions of the democratic polity is to check this tendency of a centralized power structure from becoming corrupt and authoritarian. This is done by making the authority of the `State` subject to periodic renewal of the mandate of democracy`™s ultimate sovereigns `“ the individual voters. Many of our ongoing debates on issues that impact our lives, including that of the Armed Forces Special Powers Act, AFSPA, must be places in this discursive space, so as not to lose perspective.

This renewal process of `State` authority is what is coming under attack yet again on the eve of the elections to the Autonomous District Council, barely a week from today. The freedom with which the voters are expected to exercise their franchise is being violently strangulated by those who scheme to usurp `State` authority. And the tragedy is the `State` and its instruments do not seem to be showing up in all the ways it is expected to, apart from a show of arms it will put up on the day of polling. For between the polling day and the campaign process, a lot that is far from desirable has happened, including, to say the least, intimidation of candidates and their supporters by various vested interests. It is with dismay we note the `State` in Manipur is withering away, not in the Marxist sense where its authority is ultimately and totally transferred to the people (dictatorship of the proletariat) but in the sense of a collapse of its moral hold over the people. And behold we are witnessing the anarchy that only such moral collapses of the State can bring.

IMPHAL, May 26: Contradicting the PRO IGAR (S)`™s claim of the army that secretary of Hingajang Village Church was killed in an encounter with underground cadres at B Gamnom formerly known as Hengjang village, Saikul Sub-division under Yairipok Police Station in Senapati district on May 23, chief of the village Henkhothang Kipgen alleged that the church secretary was cold-bloodedly shot in his head by the army while he was lying wounded.

The village chief made the claim during a press meet held at the village yesterday.

He further claimed that the other two persons were killed in indiscriminate firing by a group of army who were already taking positions after the duo tried to flee the area.

Narrating the incident, the village chief said that the church secretary brought two labourers to be engaged in construction of a church on May 22 evening and added that he was not aware of their identities but knew that the two were staying in the house of the church secretary.

On May 23 morning around 9 am, six unidentified Meiteis came to the area where the construction of a church was going on along with villagers and requested the village chief to provide them food which the chief accepted on humanitarian ground and asked his children to arrange food for them.

The six persons were not in camouflage dress but accompanied with a black bag each on their back. Four of them were taking rest at the premise of the house while two were inside the room when a large number of army personnel opened fire indiscriminately from different directions killing three of them including the church secretary, he recounted.

“™The army personnel were requested not to open indiscriminate fire as severe casualties may cause to the innocent villagers but the call was turned down. Even the army jawans threatened to kill me`™`™, the village chief contended.

“™While the church secretary Paokholen was lying badly wounded in pain, some army personnel rushed to him and shot dead cold-bloodedly near a banana tree. Many villagers saw the moment when the army opened fire indiscriminately on the two persons killing them near the gate of the village`™`™, he admitted.

He further said that the army personnel took the dead bodies of the three persons to a vehicle while lamenting that wife of the deceased church secretary was not allowed to identity body of her husband.

Later, the personnel captured a photo of Paokholen on camera and asked the deceased`™s wife whether the person in the photo was of her husband or not, he said.

Taking strong exception to the brutal act of the army, the village chief demanded the government to take up necessary action against the alleged cold-blooded murder of the church secretary.

It may be mentioned that the dead body of Paokholen is being kept at JNIMS morgue though post mortem has been already conducted. Identity of the other two deceased has been established.

They have been identified as Nameirakpam Rajen, 40 son of N Muhindro of Sunusiphai Awang Leikai, Bishnupur district and Maisnam Abungcha, 26 son of M Tombi of Naran Sheina Maning Leikai, Bishnupur district.

Gaikhangam dubs BJP `anti-Hindu` too

IMPHAL, May 25 : Slamming the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for acting against secularism, president of Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee Gaikhangam alleged that BJP is not only anti-Christian and anti-Muslim but also anti-Hindu.

He was speaking during a consultative meeting and blessing programme of INC DCC candidates of Ukhrul ADC at Raphei Village, Mantri Pukhri today. INC candidates from Jessami, Nungbi, Chingajaroi, Halang, Chingai, Tolloi, Teinem, Somdal, Tongou and Kachai DCCs in Ukhrul district were present at the programme.

Gaikhangam who is also the Deputy Chief Minister appealed to the hills people to cast their valuable votes in the ensuing ADC election without fear and pressure.

Unlike the BJP, the Congress party believes in non-violence and truth. Be it Islam, Hindu or Christian, the party regards the people of all religion, he asserted.

Right to cast vote is the most important right that Indian constitution guarantees for the citizen of the nation. Voting in the election is for the good cause, Gaikhangam maintained.

Regretting that Ukhrul district is reeling under slew of troubles and unwanted problems which need to rectify so that peace and development in the district are not affected by it, he admitted that the programme could not be held in Ukhrul district as scheduled earlier due to volatile situation in the district.

He mentioned that politics is there to bring development, light the dark, bridge the gaps and uplift the poor people while adding that Zeliangrong Union and Kuki National Assembly were once separate political parties but dissolved later due to disunity.

Lamenting that involvement of non-political organizations in the ADC election will only lead to disunity and chaos among the communities which should be avoided, Gaikhangam exuded confidence that the INC will win at least 16 seats out of 24 in the ensuing election.

Referring to the recent statement made by a BJP Minister that all those who eat beef should go to Pakistan if they cannot survive without eating beef, he pointed out that six churches have been burnt down after BJP came to the power under the leadership of Narendra Modi as Prime Minister.

The special category status given to the north eastern states has been also lifted by BJP obstructing special funds sanctioned for development programmes in the region. The Look East Policy has been also converted into Act East Policy by the party just for namesake, he said.

Gaikhangam went on to say that the lifting of special category status from the northeast states will have adverse affects in Manipur which has immense potential in the field of tourism and sports as the two sectors need huge funds for its development.

He also said that the Central Government has planned to utilise Rs 20,000 crores for rejuvenation of Ganga River but only Rs 2000 crores has been earmarked for development of the entire country which is not justified.

Deputy Speaker of Manipur Legislative Assembly MK Preshaw who is also Chingai A/c MLA said that he had wanted to hold the programme in Ukhrul so that he could meet womenfolk and elderly persons of the district and share their grievances.

He expressed hope that there will be a huge turnout of voters in the ensuing ADC election to be held on June 1 and chooses INC candidates considering their potential to bring in development and growth in the hill districts.

IMPHAL May 25: Deputy Chief Minister Gaikhangam inaugurated a week-long 4th State Level Watermelon Festival being organized by Nahakpam Foundation for Development (NFD) at GM Hall today.

Other guests of the inaugural function included Prof J M Laishram and Dr Chinglen Meisnam.

The festival is being held with the sole objective of promoting the economic benefits of farming water melon. A total of 12 stalls are participating in the festival.

Speaking on the occasion as chief guest, Gaikhangam who also holds the portfolio of Home asserted that the festival is meant for encouraging both the growers and buyers of watermelon which is a potential cash crop.

He called upon the growers of watermelon to accelerate its production so as to boost economy of the state.

Admitting the grievances about the present lack of processing units and market linkage of watermelon in the state, the Dy CM said that feasibility to provide facilities for extracting juice will soon be discussed with the concerned officials.

For the time being, farmers should be mindful that diminishing productivity will contradict the intention of the government towards enhancement of watermelon production, he said.

He appealed to the concerned rich philanthropies to invest and support the endeavours of local farmers in cash crops like watermelon.

The Dy CM further encouraged farming diverse crops and improving work culture towards a self reliant state.

Shanta Nahakpam of NFD in his keynote address stated that farmers have been growing watermelon in the state since the mid 1970s but it was only after the massive import from Burma since 2000 that farmers realize the economic potential of this cash crop.

Regarding the government support, he said that seeds for 300 to 400 acres are availed from the department and its products are exhibited in the festival.

There is a need for more support to expand the watermelon economy with value addition. The government can support by facilitating food processing and encouraging the farmers with irrigation facilities. Several watermelon farmers are dejected due to the lack of government support which further dims their economic prospects despite the high yield, he said.

He expressed hope that the government will extend all possible help in turning the farming of watermelon into an industry and expand the benefits for the watermelon farmers.

UP girl denies minister`s misconduct; Karnajit charged of illegally operating Club-25 Int`l

By Paojel Chaoba IMPHAL, May 25: Charges were made to the Agriculture minister Abdul Nasir implicating him of harassing two women delegates by self claimed General Secretary of Club 25

By Paojel Chaoba

IMPHAL, May 25: Charges were made to the Agriculture minister Abdul Nasir implicating him of harassing two women delegates by self claimed General Secretary of Club 25 International, Manipur, namely K Kanarjit at Manipur Press Club.

The ongoing investigation of Kanarjit and his dubious claims have shed new light on various matters including the charges in this sexual harassment case. Two women were named by Kanarjit, one from UP whom the minister harassed by texting late at night, the other was implied to have done something bordering on sexual harassment by the minister , the woman hails from Nepal.

They both had stayed at the Classic Grande in April for the World Youth Summit 2015.

As charges were hurled and counter claims were made by the minister refuting Kanarjit`™s claim. This reporter was able to contact the activist from UP.

Sanjana (name changed) through mail said that she does not even know the name of the minister. She wanted her exchange with Kanarjit in Messenger yesterday to be printed here, it was at 8.47 pm. Sanjana said ` What did the agricultural minister did with me can you please tell me as of the knowledge I have regarding me, he didn`™t message me nor did anything to me. I am a human rights activist and I know very well how to defend the things and with the proper channel.`

Sanjana mentioned that Kanarjit did not answer her.

She also texted him the next sentences, ` There is a limit of bluffing. For hiding your scams, you are misusing my State and my name. How much more you bluff. My goodness, I had never expected this from you. You have done lacs of scam that`™s why your nomination got cancelled from IYONS. You have two daughters ahead of you. Before bluffing, think of your daughters once. And I am warning you if again you misuse my name or my state name, I am going to sue you under section 500 of IPC. Mind this.` She added that she has been victimized by Kanarjit for no reason. Sanjana has given approval for these statements to be published in other media houses also.

So, the picture unfolds against the claim of Kanarjit by the same person he had implicated. The other woman from Nepal, Sushma,(name changed) cannot be contacted at the moment but reliable sources have confirmed that only a verbal altercation occurred and there was no physical harassment from the minister`™s side. The matter with Nasir was also resolved at the moment as the matter was not very abusive. However, this reporter is still trying to contact her personally.

The Kanarjit affair unfolds of lies and deceit perpetrated by himself for his momentary gains.

In another separate issue, Kanarjit when asked what his designation was by this reporter at Manipur Press Club, he had replied that he is the General Secretary of Club 25, International Manipur. It has also come to light that Kanarjit is misusing the Club 25 name to gain advantage as he did then with UNESCO.

An e-mail came to this reporter from Club 25, International Director Stephanie Benedetti. She had also attended the Global Youth Meet held here in 2014. According to her, `Many GYM members were trapped in Manipur because of the lies of KK Singh. In 2014, I was invited to come as a special guest, we (Club 25) told KK that we would not sponsor the event, and questioned his relationship to UNESCO.` The e-mail links that the director sent stated that many delegates were disgusted with the way the meet was organized. Many who thought that it was organized by UNESCO found out that it was a lie later. `Foreign South East Asian attendees were informed that they would receive $ 300 as travel stipend by Kanarjit, this did not really happen and took a lot of arguing with the organizers, at least some tickets were purchased for some delegates. There were lots of tears, as apparently many of the attendees had taken out loans from family members and their Universities to attend the Meet and now ,they did not find a way to pay back because the amount promised was not given.` This resulted in many foreign delegates almost getting stuck with their finances. The details of the mails of the foreign delegates humiliation and disgust are held back. Kanarjit has managed to promote Manipur in the worst way possible and that also to foreign and domestic delegates.

Club 25 International director also stated her stance in the mail to this reporter. It may be mentioned that during the Press Meet of Kanarjit, he had identified himself as the General Secretary of Club 25, International Manipur. He also said that the Club permits him to use a flagpost for his cars, this too turned out to be blatant lies. The statement made by Stephanie , International Director of Club 25 is reproduced below.

Club 25 has at no time authorized KK Singh to utilize the name “Club 25 International, Manipur”. There is a registered “Club 25-Manipur Chapter” in our formal records, though KK Singh is not listed as the leader. All Club 25s are 100% volunteer clubs who choose their own leaders and organize their own meetings. We have had communications in the past with KK Singh specifically reminding him that he does not have permission to start other Club 25s or to take authority over any existing clubs or start new clubs in other states of India or neighboring countries. KK Singh has attempted to assert himself over Club 25s in other states in India and neighboring countries to take a leadership role and at Club 25 International we have repeatedly turned him down.

2. Any person/youth who donates blood is allowed to be a “Club 25″ member. KK Singhs membership status in Club 25 would be open to all blood donors.

3. At no time has Club 25 International, given permission to Mr. Singh to claim titles or to use VIP flags or other status symbols or to utilize the Club 25 International name or logo to recieve preferential treatment or status.

4. The Club 25 name and logo is owned by Safe Blood for International, Inc, based in the United States. Permission of the use of the name/logo for a restaurant was NOT requested/granted from Club 25 International/Safe Blood and would be operating illegally under that name.

5. At no time has KK Singh or Club 25 Manipur received any funding or fiscal/material support for their activities from Club 25 International.

This statement proves that Kanarjit is a con artist who has been nominated for the World Youth Icon Award, 2015 to be given at IYONS ,2015. He has misled the media, duped people of lakhs, falsely announced himself as a Dr Ambedkar Award recipient, operated under false organizations and misrepresenting Club 25 and UNESCO, puts an unauthorized flag post in his car, falsely charged minister Nasir of sexual harassment and implicating two women delegates in order to save himself.

The report of this paper is based on facts and records and Kanarjit is welcome to claim that the report is baseless.
